But while the erotically adventurous forty-something quickly became a pop culture icon, fans of the series tend to enjoy Samantha but don’t actually want to be “a Samantha.” This is largely because our culture has trained us to see her promiscuity and independence as a phase, rather than a respectable, permanent way of life. Here’s our Take on why fans love Samantha's unapologetic bachelorette lifestyle, but don’t necessarily want to live it themselves-at least, not forever.

@@radhiadeedou8286 that not everyone can be in that lifestyle (or not for long), without an emotional connection when it comes to sexual encounters... I have known people that have tried (me included), but ended getting hurt or feeling drained in the process... romantic, sexual encounters can be fun without that emotional connection, but it later feels, like being with a wall, and talking to it... But I have also met people that have relationships, but with more open aspects in it, so, you could have a relationship with someone without compromising totally to a monogamous lifestyle, but, communication is the key in that case and accept that everyone you love won't accept those aspects you want and feel you need

Let’s see here: Samantha was non-judgmental, sexually liberated, independent, forward thinking, a self-made business woman, defies stereotypes of aging woman, AND was a loyal friend, and women don’t want to be her? Preach! Samantha was the one that you could tell literally anything to. And she would go to bat for her friends. Like that time that that's snotty woman at the baby shower stole Charlotte's baby name. Samantha didn't give a damn about baby names but because she knew her friend cared she called the woman a b**** and right in front of all her snooty friends and left looks put was a power move. It was jarring and hilarious at the same time (bc who calls a pregnant woman a B*TCH to her face in public at her own baby shower) and I think Charlotte just felt like her honor was defended and that's what she needed in the moment. And there was always some tension between Charlotte and Samantha because they're perspective on sexuality are Polar Opposites but Samantha didn't hesitate even a second to protect her friend. She was also the only one that carry could talk to when she was cheating on Aiden. Not to condone what she was doing but just to say that Samantha was there for her. She also gave pretty good advice and she had short patience with people feeling sorry for themselves for too long. When big left Carrie at the altar, Samantha was the one to try to cancel that expensive honeymoon that carry had booked. And when that didn't work she's the one that turned it into a girls trip to cheer carry up. Samantha was gold. And hilarious to boot.

@@bellam7546 There are definitely different cultures where men get more pressure to settle down. However, this video and the context of this video is definitely around american culture and general western culture. & i would add that in other cultures where men also get that pressure, women have even more pressures put on them again. I was previously engaged to a bangla guy and when he started cheating on me i realised he wasn't really in love with me, he was using me because he was pressured to settle down. He certainly suffered for the pressures he had but settling down & impregnating someone else was p much all that was expected of him. By contrast, his sister had already fulfilled her parents' wishes to settle down & get married to someone she barely knew....but was given the additional pressure of sorting out her irresponsible brother's life all the time and giving birth to a baby asap and doing all the housework perfectly (and i mean perfectly or she would be spoken badly of) and cooking amazing food and managing all the family's problems & of course, looking beautiful too. She also had her own personal desire besides doing everything for everyone else, to have a good career but she dropped it for her husband. My strong intuition based on what i saw, is the reason she couldn't get pregnant was because of all the burdens placed upon her. She was an incredibly beautiful intelligent resilient person who should have been absolutely thriving in life.

I disagree with about half of this video, and think it took some things out of context to support the thesis but I liked watching it regardless. What I like about Samantha is how fantastic of a friend she is. It sometimes gets lost since the show is called "sex" and the city, and not "four best friends," but she supports them constantly, encourages them to love and value themselves, and prioritizes them over her romantic relationships. She's fiercely loyal and is often vulnerable around them and I think it's sad that because she's not often emotionally vulnerable with her romantic partners, people interpret that as her being emotionally immature. I like that she views sex as something fun that brings her a lot of pleasure -it's a new adventure for her each time. She goes after what she wants time and time again, whether that's a client, a man, or a membership to a pool. She prioritizes her career her friends, and sex. But unlike a lot of other headstrong women in media, she isn't portrayed as cruel, nor does she try to bring other women down. And while she can say be judgmental of other people settling down, it always came off more as an annoyance that she had to respect their lifestyles and choices, but they weren't respectful of her choices.

My spirit always resonated with Samantha because of her optimism and open-mindedness! Looking back...if Samantha seems emotionally unavailable it's because her emotions were always being leased by one of the other ladies who needed her to be the "strong one!" Even in the midst of her cancer diagnosis, and her own heartbreak... Samantha never cast judgment on them, and they knew it. So they ALWAYS brought all their baggage to her front door - Miranda with her perpetual pessimism and neurosis, Charlotte with her perfectionism and obsessive conformity, and Carrie with constant selfish and self-destructive behavior - in fact, she reminds me of how draining it can be to have multiple, close relationships. It's wrong to call her 'vain'. Just because she wasn't constantly picking herself apart like the other women, doesn't mean she's vain... a vain person wouldn't leave the mirror long enough to be such a constant support system for their friends, and wouldn't cheer them on and lift them up as often as she does. Confidence should be vocalized, there's nothing wrong about saying what you deserve to feel about yourself.

Her outlook, never apologising for herself, the most directly honest, was the best friend to all the girls, and had the ability to love another but never gave up on HERSELF like so many others do because they choose what they THINK is right for them or go by society's rules, over their own self worth. Samantha actually was confident in her own skin. The only times her confidence was slightly shaken in herself, was when she fell in love... Yet always realised that she needed to put herself first! Which inevitably put the ones she loved first too. So they didn't end up getting super hurt because she became either miserable or end up cheating on someone she truly cared for. But I don’t really want sex, and I’m happy with that. That being said, human sexuality is one of my personal interests. So even though I don’t personally have much of it these days, I still tend to be the person my friends and daughter seek out to talk about it. I pride myself on being non judgemental. I think there are many aspects to Samantha’s character that we should all strive to emulate. There are way too many preconditions to have that confidence. Don't beat yourself over the head for it. To be a "Samantha", you need to be excessively good looking (as in not average good-looking, not feminist good-looking, I'm talking Hollywood good-looking like Cattrall was in her prime), wealthy and very successful , and you must have a close-knit circle of friends, instead of business partners. Fucking people old enough to be one's grandparent is a sexual kink very few people have. Too few to make it the "norm" or something that should be institutionalized. I don't care about being "better" than anyone, I'm just baffled to see people so afraid of old age. And I'm not even that much older than you. When I'm 70, I hope to be a respectable, responsible and knowledgeable grandmother, with other pursuits in my life than my orgasms so I can spend my days reading and spoiling my grandchildren with imparting some knowledge on them, and not a sex-crazed spinster who believes she's "free" because she behaves like an old pervert.

So, in short, the most attack aspect about Samantha is merely that she is emotionally, mentally, and sexually sound on her own, within herself. She doesn't need completeness by an outside source, AKA, a man. While the other three characters ultimately don't find true fulfillment until they are committed in romantic relationships, Samantha's ultimate fulfillment is simply her being herself, and loving herself enough to be happy without a significant other being necessary. As her classic line goes, "I love you, but I love me more." Unfortunately, in a patriarchal, traditionalist, conservative, nuclear family-oriented society, anything that isn't a man and woman joined together in holy matrimony and popping out 2.5 kids is seen as less-than-ideal or flat out unacceptable. This can be said about same-sex couples, polyamorous relationships, and lifelong celibacy, or being a bachelor / Bachelorette.
@alrune8
@alrune8 3 года назад
You can be a bachelorette all your life long if that's what you're looking for and if you understand the price to pay in exchange for this lifestyle i.e. the necessity of growing a titanium skin to shrug off other people's opinions (no emotional weakling can sustain lifelong singlehood, which Samantha demonstrates), all your precious belongings going to waste if you have no one bequeath it to, obligation of single motherhood if you want a kid, solitary old age etc... As long as you don't expect other people to protect you from the consequences of lifelong singlehood, you will reap the benefits. They just won't be the same as a woman who chose a different route because different lifestyles means different rewards and risks, that's all.

If you can't live your life without riding the pseudo-moralist bandwagon along with all the social media addicts, the twitter mobsters and all that shit, just keep on following trends and try to make believe you're somehow part of a community that would just disappear the minute Internet and electricity are down. Families are present and tangible, online communities are virtual, that's the difference. But I don't believe that people should love themselves more than other people. And loving yourself more than your partner is not the same as having respect for yourself or knowing your self-worth.
