Extremely relevant and necessary talking point - as someone that has taught in primary education I recognise the difficulties around this area. In particular I feel the points Michael made were excellent and to the point👏🏾
NO, sex education should not be taught in primary school. It is the parent's role- relationships education. The issue is that in many schools the materials shown are not appropriate, MP Miriam Cates has spoken at length about this. To provide some context, she was a Secondary Science teacher before going into politics. There are schools that also have the audacity to tell parents they can't view these materials beforehand. Teaching online safety, boundaries, stranger danger etc should be taught in schools, I agree with this point. Sadly, these topics are being used as a Trojan horse for other things. Governments should also be actively working to remove porn from the internet, as it goes hand in hand with child exploitation, sex trafficking and abuse of women.
Yes it is definitely down to the parent to have an open dialogue with their children about sex education first. Also it is key that parents consent with their child being taught sex education and not forced too by a school.
It’s not a choice of “DO you want them to learn about it?” but a choice of “WHERE do you want them to learn about it?” Gotta compromise like with most things in life.
