Glen IS the Bass Player in The SexPistols! He wrote Pretty Vacant , and may have been the first member! He worked at Malc Mclaren's shop, but had an electic musical taste ,and has been criticised for this throughout! Now Everyone has an electic musical taste, I have been a fan of the band since 1977, and always liked Glen! I liked his later project 'Rich Kids', and everyone in the industry respects him. Good looking fella, always polite and honest ,and was part of everything relevant that The Sex Pistols ever did! God Bless him he is a legend! dx
He wrote 'Submission' with Rotten. McLaren gave them the title, and wanted them to make it about submissive sex, but they thought it was too corny. That's why they made it about a 'sub(marine) mission' to take the piss.
Main songwriter , best musician by a long stretch . He didn´t have the ´go get f**#ed ` attitude of the others which created a huge ego clash with , specially , Lydon . Reckon they´re still not the best of mates .
Steve Jones came up with most of the riffs for the songs and had an overall big influence musically in the Sex Pistols. Matlock was a good musician, but he was a square peg in a round hole and needed to leave for the band to continue. He was the Pete Best of the Sex Pistols.
@@delhidelirium9091 Matlock was the only one who was actually musical before the Sex Pistols and it was Malcolm McLaren that decided that Steve Jones should play guitar. Matlock tried teaching Steve Jones chords but Jones was only interested in barre chords. The other Pistols didn't like Matlock because he was 'nice' and wanted to be 'fun like The Beatles' and he was kicked out just for that reason. I know that he detests the line "I am an antichrist" which Lydon wrote. Him and Lydon have always had a strained relationship but then Lydon is like that. Even Jones said recently that he is not comfortable around Lydon. Interestingly enough the whole reason that McLaren put the Sex Pistols together was because Jones was compulsive thief and he wanted to get him off the streets. Lydon was the last member to be recruited.
kev catnip> But look at the huge amount of solid material the Stones put out after Brain Jones died. If he had stayed alive and remained with the band, he may very well have dragged the band down and kept them from the fame they later achieved. Likewise, the Sex Pistols would never have achieved the fame and popularity they did with the tension Matlock caused. He had to go.
It’s always annoyed this piss outta me throughout the years to find Matlock viciously dismissed by non-musicians based on Lydon’s nanciful whining. I’d sooner have a pint with this guy. Most great musical acts require contrasting characteristics. Good to see them all alive! Nowadays that seems quite the feat. Luck to all! 🍒🍒🍒
Steve had to overdub Sid's bass on Bodies because Glen refused to return to add bass to the song after he was kicked out. Glen played with Sid before Sid embarked on his fateful tour to the states as a gesture that enabled Sid to fund his trip. Glen is a good bloke.
parker. jonesy wrote 13 more albums after the pistols even with bob dylan, so how was glen the 'engine'? why don't you inform youself instead of spitting fanboy crap? they wrote all the bolloks songs over jam sessions and if you had at least the album you would know songs are all signed jones cook matlock lydon obviously except no fun
Parker, hey, you fucking idiot, i was pointing out that jones wrote a lot of stuff along with all the pistols songs in answer to your stupid statement that 'glenn was the engine' if you still have some neuron to recall your stupid post, keep on showing the world how fucked is your brain you fucking count
Ever get the feeling you've been "click baited"? "Explains the reality of band members relationship" Then 5 seconds at the end saying they chat once in a while.
Bit of a click-bait title, no? 15 seconds of "we don't really talk" at the end, doesn't reveal much about the band members' relationship that we didn't already know.
Steve Jones wrote the majority of the music and came up with the majority of the riffs they used for the songs. Matlock came up with some of the music, and he was a better musician than any of the others, but obviously they didn't need him to succeed.
@@banishedfromthedwarfplanet530 he was better than steve on the bass but steves overdubs on the bollocks are great if you listen to matlock on the bootleg spunk to many bass runs takes away the power
There is no doubt, and it is corroborated by so many of the punk luminaries of the era, the Pistols were at the height of their powers with Matlock on bass and songwriting. With him gone, they soon became parody. I met him btw. In 1986 he was playing with Johnny Thunders and my then-band happened to support him. I seem to recall he loved his beer....great song in this vid, great voice too, brilliant musician....
Glen is a good singer and player who writes cool songs. Nice to hear he likes the bass playing of both Klaus Voorman and not surprising but also nice to hear he likes Holger Czukay. Interesting that he mentions how much he liked Tamla Motown via Dusty Springfield on Ready, Steady, Go!. I remember watching a radio interview with John Lydon not too long ago where I distinctly remember him saying he (JL) didn’t like Tamla Motown and New Orleans Blues, I think he said.
Siiiiiiii Lydon is so fuckin ANNOYING, self centered, loud, obnoxious, narcissistic, and Not that very “deep” or “smart”. I even think he married Nora for money 💰🤣🤣🤣 He’s trash.
I'm really surprised at just how good a musician Glen Matlock actually is, I remember how the music establishment of the mid 70's were saying that the original four members of the Sex Pistols couldn't play, well my response to that is, BS the four original members of The sex Pistols were actually really good musicians, and they still are to this day.
@@youjoker9647 Where the hell have you came up with such a reference ? Not that it doesn´t sound like most bands from that era , but that specific , good call indeed .
@emmanuel de la cruz I´m not sure . What I read and heard is that Lydon in particular hated Glen for being too " mainstream " in his tastes and way he conducted himself . He didn´t have the chaotic and defying attitude the others had . Even PIL , look at Wobble and Levene , there´s a Chav beneath all that creativity . Glen was too " middle class " for Lydon basically " . It´s very possible Malcom also thought that a more " Punk/Chav " character would enrich the band . And were they right or what ? Sid completely obscured Glen which is unfair af since Glen was pretty much the pumping heart of teh Pistols .
Glen Matlock, Top geezer and Bass player. If it hadn't been for Lydon (Who thought the Pistols were all about him) Glen, Jonesey and Cookie could have gone on to do better things because they could all play their instuments great and wrote top shelf music 👍
I agree with Glen regarding Klaus Voorman. His work with Yoko on her solo album is brilliant. And so it goes, I knew when I first heard the Pistols, Glen was driving the band.
I played bass in a Sex Pistols concept band in the early 90's. I loved those simple powerful bass lines, especially Submission...all of them rocked! I had a cheat sheet taped to my side fill on butchers paper in black texta.
i saw the pistols with glen matlock , in 76, [ i always thought glen was the most natural musician in them, and wrote most of the music in them, [they didnt write too many songs , after he went [and lost a lot [as syd was image ],
@@gregoryheidt1851 I'm guessing it may have something to do with a Mick Jagger interview where the Rolling Stone propounded how effective regular foot washing was on tour. How the hell do I remember this stuff?! :)
LOL, they only had ONE album. Not exactly Lennon-McCartney here...... And technically, He-Co-Wrote them. And before you start, watch Steve Jones on "Classic Albums" to see what Co-Wrote actually means.... THe man deserves his dues, but let's not act like he was keith richards here....
Glen was the main songwriter, and he wrote good songs. Very good songs. All the Pistol's original songs are strong, well-crafted and catchy. But Steve created riffs and tunes, too. And they also required Lydon's lyrics and delivery to make them the statements they became. Plus the power and force and tightness of that band. I think you needed all those elements to get it to the level they got in terms of lasting impact.
Goofy lyrics, but I love the chord structure. It has a pronounced Them vibe, which is only natural since there wouldn't have been any punk rock without "Gloria" and "I Can Only Give You Everything."
I agree fully unfortunately all the negativity in the band was the reason they are still talked about now if it want for John then they would of just been another Beatles rip off. The sex pistols changed music forever and the stuff you Listen to now wouldn’t exist. They needed sid for the looks and style but unfortunately he was doomed from the start
You can tell in the Grundy interview that Glenn was very different to the other three, who were all much rougher and tougher. He had to go and no wonder...plus he washed his feet too much.
@@haydnevans1963 That's an excellent point - and that Paul was under Steve's wing as much as anything else. The more one thinks about it, ....they had zero Direction of any kind, ...and that if only Glenn had've actually, l dunno, been more accepted and uad stayed in the Band... I guess part of the mystiquè of the Pistols is that they only made that one record... Stooges' best two tracks "Open Up and Bleed" and "Sick of You" never appeared on any of their Releases...lol, these kinds of things make Punk what it is, l suppose.
The title is highly misleading. The 30 seconds on his relationship with his past band mates doesn’t really justify naming the 17 minute video. Click baiting BS
