A radio interview with Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook.
Recorded for a radio show in 1979, at the tail end of his initial stint with the Pistols.
Some interesting bits and bobs in this interview. Among the topics discussed are Malcolm McClaren, The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle, Ronnie Biggs, Who Killed Bambi, Sid, Glen Matlock, writing & recording with the Pistols, US tour etc. ..
I do not own the copyright to the original audio. I edited together this version (cutting the music out) and speed corrected it. I also put together the slideshow. Enjoy!

this is a fascinating piece of lost Sex Pistols history from a very murky and confusing period. Thank you so much for uploading. Seems like Steve & Paul still held out hopes of keeping the pistols name. 123 & Just Another Dream and the stuff with Andy Allen on bass would have been great Pistols singles just like silly thing was.

Even today, their records rarely get played on radio, or at least what I hear of radio. Not even the supposedly least objectionable stuff like 'Pretty Vacant'. Then again, Pink Floyd and Led Zep hardly ever released singles in their heyday, and subsequently they rarely got played on radio aside from a very few numbers. As with the Pistols, that just meant, if you wanted their music, you had to fork out and buy it, which for a working class kid in the 70s wasn't cheap.

Paul is being ultra diplomatic here, a very un-Pistols like attitude, as the others were far more inclined to slag off at others. I wonder if he'd be so kind to Malcolm today. Still, the interesting part for me were the pics, some of which I'd never seen before.

@johnnyoranges
@johnnyoranges 2 года назад
@@kaptinshazbat7535 Yes. If Paul had been the frontman, they'd have gone nowhere. Early on, Steve actually gave up singing lead, and stuck to guitar, so that the Rotten persona could be that focal point and basically the 'punk' image.

Some good questions here, very relevant for the time and no one better to answer them than Paul. With Lydon he's always trying to prove a point and you don't always get the plain truth.
@johnnyoranges
@johnnyoranges 2 года назад
As Johnny's gotten older, but still hung onto that 'Rotten' image, he has looked sillier and sillier. However, as a young guy, he was the one putting his balls on the line and taking the heat for it. Take my word. No Johnny, no Pistols. Unless you believe 'TGR'nRS' is the equal of 'NMTB', which it clearly isn't.

@betaville72
@betaville72 2 года назад
The interviews with various audiences on that tour shows they were pretty stupid. Antagonlzing Sid, while he's standing above you on stage with a bass in his hand was not exactly bright, for example.
@kikovazquez7277
@kikovazquez7277 2 года назад
I think he said Americans who came to the shows were stupid. I can well imagine that most in the audience were coming out to catch a freak show and watch trouble unfold. The biggest punk show I was at was around the same time as the Pistol's tour - a horribly dilapidated ancient vacant and rotting theater in NYC which I think was being used by CBGB to promote concert type exposure for punk outside of the club environment. That place was not fit for anything but demolition. A cold night, no heating, holes in the building, the crowd held out on the sidewalk to freeze for maybe more than an hour after the show was supposed to start. Then 3 name bands - I remember The Dictators and The Dead Boys but not the 3rd. The audience was moronic for sure, but maybe you couldn't blame them all things considered, but they were there more for chaos than music. Constant conflict between bands and audience with The Dead Boys finally ending the fiasco by smashing instruments on the stage and storming off. This may have been the one and only show that got off the ground in this subway toilet of a venue.
