These incredibly sexist PSAs from the 1940s and ’50s show how far we’ve come in the fight for gender equality.

In US news and current events today, NowThis is showing how far women have come from the sexism of the ‘40s and ‘50s as illuminated by these sexist commercials and vintage PSAs. A lot has changed from how the 40s and 50s treated women to women’s treatment today, largely thanks to the feminism debate and women’s clubs that fought for equality. While we still see women wrestling with inequality and controversies like the sexist Peloton commercial, a lot has changed.

@wendyjung4616
@wendyjung4616 2 года назад
I agree with your opinion and I totally understand it. But the only thing that turns me off with the situation shown is the fact that they just shoved the responsibility to the wife to remain as calm and collected as much as she can without telling the same thing to the husband. It is just okay if the husband shows some emotions like anger, but the wife is prohibited to do so. It's like they are trying to emphasize that women can not retaliate to men and instead of controlling their anger they will rather shove it to women to release their frustration. That's why domestic violence was quite common at that time. Again, it was never a good thing to add fuel to the fire, but the example given in the video just feels very sexist to me. It should be applied to both genders and not just to women.

It's sexist when it's only adressed to women and women are told to do so to please men. It wouldn't be sexist if the advice was given to all genders. What's also sexist is to show a young man with a book as attractive and a young woman with a book unattractive.

@@helgaioannidis9365 They weren't only addressed to women. The video comes from a PSA called "Body Care and Grooming," which gives advice to both men and woman throughout its whole duration. Also the woman is still holding the book in her "ideal" appearance, so I don't think it's implying that women shouldn't be reading or anything.

That we men must uphold our cultural roles and you don’t have to because you’re a woman? That’s sexist and you should know it. Also what does what happened with Tina Turner have to do with any of this? That’s a whole different discussion and you’re pulling a huge strawman argument. I like this PSA, the main point is just don’t be sloppy. Sloppiness seems to something people have just accepted now. Dressing up around the house was normal for older women who grew up in that time period in my family. People cared about their appearance, especially during family get togethers. You can’t judge the past with eyes of the present, the culture was different. People were definitely more put together. How is it sexist to advise women to not be sloppy? You shouldn’t want to be in the first place.

They were cherry picking in these clips as I have seen the full videos. There are videos that address the men just the same way on hygiene, manners, and attractiveness. The majority of them really are not being sexist just to the girls. The boys get an earful too. If you watch these old videos they would encourage people to work together in family units being mindful of each other and the community at large, working productively, and balancing home life with work/school life. I think it is great that people used to put more pride in how they looked. It isn't pleasant walking around in public nowadays when people do not take pride in their appearance or hygiene quite often.
