A good rule for arguments that my husband (of 25 years!) and I use, is that if we aren’t making any headway, we switch sides of the argument. He tries to argue in favor of my point of view, and I try to argue his point of view. It really makes us see where the other person is coming from!

I've been married to a man with muscular dystrophy for 3 years, and I just want to say thank you for helping to normalize this kind of relationship! Your openness has helped many of my friends and family understand why it doesn't matter that my husband uses a wheelchair to get around, because when the chemistry is right, the chair is a side issue. Shane's constant attempts to make you laugh and keep you fed with snacks remind me so much of my husband. We've got two small children now and despite being in a wheelchair, my husband is WAY more involved as a parent than many fully able bodied dudes are.

You two never cease to amaze me. I have a very loving relationship with a wonderful man. We have been together for 22 years. At first we were both able-bodied, fully functional adults. First change was, he lost his leg above the knee. Our intimate life, both physically and emotionally took awhile to adjust to. He doubted his manhood and became depressed, despite my best efforts to build him up. I could have walked away... He told me to, but that is not my way. So with some serious communication and lot's of love, we worked past all the different issues that did and didn't arise. Next he injured his spine. Not as difficult to get through as the first hurdle, but again our types of " interactions " had to be worked out. Finally, he had a stroke. This really changed everything. For a good while, we could not even hold a conversation. He cried alot, but together we worked on his recovery. So here again, all parts of our intimate relationship had to be worked out. Even holding hands became a process. But with some therapy and my inventive mind, I am happy to say that our relationship is the best it has ever been. I wish that I had you both to inspire me back then. But I enjoy sharing your life now through RU-vid. Bright Blessings to you both! Thanks for listening 💗

@John Plawzan - I am so sorry that everyone has left you. You deserve SO much more from friends and family. I am not sure if things have improved in this area, since you last posted this comment a year ago. I certainly hope so. You matter. You deserve an awesome vibe tribe that holds that space for you when you need it most. All I can say about those that abandoned you is it's their loss. They are missing out on creating cherished memories with a wonderful person. Keep shining brightly, so much so, that you leave a path of shimmering sparkly lights, for others to follow. Sending heartfelt hugs and blessings your way! 🦋👼🕯✨️🙏💙

@Brenda Hartten, even though you did not have Shane & Hannah to inspire you back then, you are most certainly an inspiration now to others. I'm sorry for the health struggles your husband and yourself has had to endure, but your love was strong and you held on through the worst of unimaginable times .. and now, you have overcome the hurdles and came through it all with a deeper love and understanding. I admire your determination, your grit, your refusal to give up, your courage and your strength. Thank you for sharing your story. You are truly an inspiration to all of us. 💜

If this relationship works for them both or anyone else that’s great m. As parents you never really want to have your child be a caregiver for their spouse and it is not easy mentally or physically. It’s not a day, a week, or year. It’s a lifetime. I wouldn’t disown my child be I’ll be honest I wouldn’t be happy about it. I think what you’re doing with this series is really beautiful, exposing your personal life to help normalize it. I think the world needs more truth, more honesty. We should all be more honest with each other about “taboos” and struggles, we’d all feel so much less alone. It’s beautiful cause through these videos you could be helping someone who’s disabled feel more “normal” and understood, or maybe you’re helping someone in their relationship with a disabled person, whether they’re already pursuing it or they’re just wondering if they could, yk? You guys are just really amazing, keep it up ❤️

On those "advice for the couple" things at wedding reception, I advise people "when your partner is getting annoying or you're on the edge of a fight, stop and think....am I hungry? Did I sleep well last night? Do I feel well physically?" Just being aware of stuff like low blood sugar or a back ache can prevent so many needless, dumb arguments.

I have to comment on this because I live in a part of Mexico that's very very mixed, I'm in the north of Baja California like 30 minutes south of San Diego, California and in here you can see people and children that are VERY mixed, I myself can be considered "white" but my older brother is very much "brown". And STILL when I started dating my boyfriend who looks brown, friends of my mom would come to me and say "you should find a boy who makes the race BETTER not WORSE", and I still not get it, it's just skin, if anything having deeper skin tones is better for overall skin health. I tried to explain it to them but it was like talking to a wall.

@@bigpotpoker1 Not all disabilities are visible. And many relationships start out one way and end up inter-abled, due to illness or age. Let's also consider our military and other types of public servants who may become disabled due to dangers on the job. A lot of people think a disability won't EVER happen to them or their loved ones, but that's simply not true. We need to allow for these conversations (at an age appropriate pace) in sex ed. Not sure what you think "transgender gay sex" is, but that comment reads as grossly homophobic. Squirmy and Grubbs - ya'll are the real deal. Keep educating and being a bright light in this world!
@iamshooketh9345
@iamshooketh9345 4 года назад
Brittany Martz While I dont agree with the language, the sentiment is not 100% off. In my country at least, sex ed is about safe sex, technical baby making process and relationships, it includes gay sex, again clinical. People with disabilities have sex just like anyone else, it’s not necessary to go into detail on how interable couples can have sex because the class is not put in place to teach kids about good sex positions and technique lol. A simple inclusion of interabled couples and relationships is enough. We do not need a demonstration video.
@brittanymartz6936
@brittanymartz6936 4 года назад
@@iamshooketh9345 Oh I don't think a demonstration video is necessary - that's not what I'm proposing. But a simple acknowledgement that interabled couples exist and have sexual relationships is enough. I just think it's inaccurate to assume that kids won't have questions about it or that they won't one day experience an interabled relationship. The problem is - in this country - there seems to be very little regulation regarding who teaches what and some kids aren't even learning about things like consent or contraceptives. The curriculums are so all over the place that a lot of kids leave with more questions than answers.

The one with "remembering you are on the same team not proving each other wrong" changes everything. It took me...and still takes me ENERGY to have changed that behaviour of being "no, YOU can come to ME and YOU have to do the work now" into being more patient, actually explain whats wrong and again if i have to and to say "Ok we talked about it i am mad but i still love you and hug you" because still showing someone you are near even if it is in an argument helps sooooo much. and yes, i hate it to cry and then i feel weak in my arguments but it is honest that when one feels hurt to show it and then the other one can understand "ohhh i reaaally hurt you because of that but i thought about something else in that moment sorry". i am not english speaking i hope it makes sense.

Can you do a "How Shane Does.." video? Like not the stuff like how Hannah helps in eating, going to the bathroom, or showering because you've already done that but like you talked about how SHANE pays the bills and plans the calendars. Be interested to see how HE does it being that he's limited in his hand/wrist use. Like a Day in the Life of Shane and how HE "operates" during the day when it comes to "adulting". How does he pay bills? How does he plan the calendars and other appointments? What equipment does he use to do XYZ (like making the grocery list) etc.

It is surprising and perhaps telling that googling those questions does not lead one to the answer. It shows how little this is a topic in our otherwise oversexualized or at least properly sexualized society. So really, it is awesome you address it here, as weird as that may be for some people and sometimes for yourself. Thank you so much for making these videos 🖤 as someone with a disability, I didn't see or hear anyone talk about intimacy in a relationship when one partner is disabled growing up. I genuinely didn't see a relationship or crush as possible until I was able to walk around and stop using an electric wheelchair. Even now in adulthood it is hard for me to admit to my husband that I need to stop doing something because my hips hurt or my body hurts. I like to make other excuses. I've been becoming more comfortable with it, but these videos make me feel far less weak or alone. Before these videos, it has felt like making accommodations in the bedroom has only been treated as a negative or a disappointment by those who don't have a disability or who haven't been in a relationship with someone with a disability, or that it is treated and talked about as if you're losing something or missing something. When in reality it's just sex, you do it how you do it, everyone is different, and it's okay and normal.

Plus, just the other day, my mom and I were assaulted and told to "go back from where we came from" even though we're American citizens my whole life, are a part of the community, volunteer, etc. The problem is, people make assumptions about people without knowing anything about them. I’ve seen racism first hand, too many times, and it was shocking to me at the beginning but I soon realised this was an every day occurrence. A long time ago when I was living in NY, I met a new friend who was in a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down, when she shared her story with me. Before she became paralyzed, she had one small child at that time, a baby boy only several months old. After her son had his first set of immunizations, she was feeding him baby cereal, his first try at food. He wasn't very receptive, so she tried making a little game of it (as we Moms often do) .. a taste for you, a taste for Mommy. Very soon after that, she fell ill .. she said it was days of what seemed like a hurricane was raging through her body, and she just waiting until it was over. At the end, she was paralyzed .. that was the damage that was done after the "hurricane" .. all from sharing a spoon (saliva) with her baby after he had gotten immunized. She went on to have 3 more babies (with a husband who was so crazy in love with her) and she was one of the happiest people I ever knew. Let me just add that she was a stunner (yes, very similar to you, Hannah!) and her husband was incredibly handsome (yes, very similar to you, Shane!) We became the closest of friends, both as Mom's who were young and in our baby-rearing years, as well as couple-friends with her and her husband. I said all of that to say this: one thing she said that struck me (and I've never forgotten) is that even though she was paralyzed from the waist down - meaning she could not move her legs at all - she still felt every single contraction while in labor and giving birth .. which showed me that having paralyzed legs did not mean she had a paralyzed uterus. Two completely different things altogether. And just because Shane cannot have use of his legs it does not mean he has immovable or non-working private parts and cannot enjoy the pleasure of intimacy with his wife. Anyway -- when you were talking about that in this video it just reminded me of that story similarly likened to my friends'. Ok, well that's all 😉 carry on, and continue to be blessed and to be a blessing 💜 Much love always

About the penis, the reason why people with this disability should have normal privates in both size and function is because the penis believe it or not, is not a muscle, so size wise it should not be affected, and as long as there are no hormonal problems or nerve damage, getting erect should also not be a problem...

Lilly Flower --I literally typed is the penis a muscle--and this is what came up so yea not a muscle at all just a spongey hanging thing off the body... The penis is not a muscle Contrary to popular belief, the so-called love muscle does not contain any muscles. That's why you cannot move it very much when it's erect. The penis is a kind of sponge that fills with blood when a man is sexually excited.

How I wish I would have someone like you guys when I was young and looking for love. My lack of self-esteem and feelings of being not good enough because of my disability has kept me from ever finding anyone. I even had one guy tell me when he was breaking up with me that he could never marry me because I "was a cripple". And I took that to heart, that I wasn't good enough for anyone. I wonder if things would have turned out different if I had role models like you to follow. I'm so proud of what you're doing because I know personally how it helps others. Thank you.

That's awful. I'm so sorry that happened to you, you are worthy of love. And it sounds like you dodged a bullet with your ex, if he said such an awful thing to you. I think one bonus of disability is that it kind if weeds out the ignorant people and you can choose to ignore them, I would recommend looking g up some disability activists on instagram. It can help with your self esteem, personally I love nina tame- she's great. I really hope you can find happiness and compassion for yourself. 😊😊💕

I do not have any physical disabilities, but I'm so sorry you had that to deal with an unloving soul like that. If it means anything, there are a lot of us out here who don't care about someone's condition/diagnosis and still find you beautiful.

Sending you the love you deserve! Remember, you can still find love. Love doesn’t have to be born from youth. You can find it now too. You’re worthy of it! Those ex’s were never meant for you anyways... such trash. Don’t ever give up hope ❤️❤️

Shane's best line "oh is this too much? Oh no your going for it!" Honestly love your videos explaining your lives. I also found it quite shocking that the parent's of Shane's ex's actually said something like that to them! But then you have Hannah's parent's who are the best so every cloud :) Stay safe to you both and all of you watching this video!

To be fair to the parents, many people hire carers to at least help with the care. It's all fine now, but Hannah is not living the way a trained carer does and being a 24/7 carer gets harder as you get older. I worry that she is not lifting him in the way a trained career would. I am sure these parents worried about such practical matters too.

Thank you so much for being so open and helping us “able bodied” couples understand these things. I will eventually be disabled and so this is helping me to feel that there is hope for my relationship with my husband when that time comes. Thank you

@itzsykez You think a lot of men not only don't help out physically with a baby but also provide zero emotional support? After the baby is past infancy/toddlerhood, the most important part of raising a child is teaching them and supporting their emotional and psychological development.

itzsykez Shane will be a wonderful father and you have no idea what you’re talking about. Disabled parents are not less than. I’m a person with two “healthy” parents , they’re both awful parents . I’m disabled and I’m amazing with kids and my partner tells me everyday I’m an invaluable part of this team we make. 🤔 turns out disabled doesn’t mean less than important and being disabled doesn’t make you a burden 😧
