The cover of Yukio Mishima's Star republished by Penguin Modern has this stunning screen-printed pop art cover by Tadanori Yoko from the 1960s. It's by far my favourite cover of all time!

This was another absolutely KILLER video and it is always so fun to see new recommendations. These books that I recommend are probably not going to be super accessible to an English audience, but I may as well give a sample. Plus, there are SOME English ones. I couldn't tell you my favourite cover of all time- yet: 1- Ekko: Et Essay om Algoritmer og Begjær (Echo: An Essay On Algorithms and Desire) by Lena Lindgren. I really love the look of the classic Baroque painting with the soft green font. 2- Tilbakeslaget (the Reaction) by Carline Tromp- Like your Eve Babetz, I really love the green font against the wine purple background. 3- The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner by James Hogg- I haven't read this, but GOD if I cannot wait for the opportunity. It is so grizzly and interesting. 4- Pachinko by Min Jin Lee- this is such a beautiful cover and I cannot wait to read this either. But studies are an ass.

I like your examples a lot -- you're right about color choices and just words can cause a double-take. I decided to read these books because I liked the cover: - How Proust Can Change Your Life in paperback [Alain de Botton, Vintage; First Edition (April 28, 1998)] - Blue Jelly in hardback [Debbi Bull, Hyperion; First Edition (April 1, 1997)] - Beautiful Losers in paperback [Vintage; Reissue edition (November 2, 1993)] - Breakfast at Tiffany's in paperback [Truman Capote; by Vintage Books, January 1, 1993)]; I read most of the Vintage editions of Capote books that Borders had in the 90s. The idea of not judging a book by its cover without any more caveats is silly. Even using a more accurate verb like "evaluate" would get the point across better if a person really means, "no, you should not take a mere glance at the front jacket of a book and form opinions about it." Yet, it's totally possible to evaluate a book just by making eye contact with it. Once you hold it in your hands? Ooo, maybe that "gonna get this one" becomes an "eww, i hate the way it feels," and upon closer inspection," "and definitely don't like the way it smells."

Stuuuuning covers. Thank you for the complete breakdown, too! I think collecting books is like collecting anything--we do it because we like it and in some way it's an aesthetic art form! If I hold a book and it has ugly deckled edges, I will not buy haha!

I have a copy of a Picador Classic of American Psycho that I found at a Half-Priced Books which is a completely white cover with the name and author in small text in the bottom left corner and in the bottom right corner is a smudged bloody fingerprint. It is so perfect and beautiful. Great video, I’m very interested in what people think about movie posters so this was fun as well!

Fun video! I think about book covers a lot, but sadly mostly about how most of them are just meh to me, and why they aren't better overall. Btw I actively dislike most of the book covers that you love ahahahahahaha but I am autistic and those bright colours together make me need to book a few sessions in a sensory deprivation tank (you'll be receiving an invoice). I want to run my favourite book cover of the year by you. It does actually have pops of bright colour, but with a dark background, rather a gruesome image, and to me, beautiful font choices. Monstrilio by Gerardo Samano Cordova.

I always had a stronger tie to good album covers since they feel more central to the work and more of an artist's decision, whereas book covers seem more like a publishers choice. That being said, I like the minimalism of my copy of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and the ominous look of my copy of Underworld.

My all-time GOAT book cover is the Puffin Books edition of A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin. If you haven't seen it, please Google and feast your eyes, as it brings me so much joy - they don't make fantasy covers like that any more... I just HAD to own it, despite having an omnibus edition, which I actually prefer to read. Runners up for me are The Goldfinch, The Dutch House, all of the Mieko Kawakami Picador editions, and the Rachel Cusk Faber & Faber editions. From this video, Among Flowers and A River Runs Through It really piqued my interest, what beauties.
@AnaWallaceJohnson

omggggg. That cover is reminding me of the animated version of the hobbit, for some reason and I am so here for it. Cusk is always KILLING it with those minimal covers.
