I'm slowly migrating to Seydels. I had Greg at 1623 Custom Harmonicas build an 1847 in G with a Blue Moon comb. Absolutely my favorite harp ever.

Seydel harps are the best. They not only last three times as long but they come in dozens of tunings. They are like custom harps. Hohner only has a very few tunings, Richter and a couple others.

I am just a beginning player, but I decided if I am really going to do this, then get the best. I had tried cheap Fender Blues and a few Lee Oskars, then I bought a Seydel. And then I bought a whole set of the 1847 Blues Silver in 7 different keys. Then, I bought the Skydiver tremolos in all the available keys and the same with the Sailor Steels. These are fantastic harps. My favorite is one I just bought--the Fanfare Stainless Steel in "C". What incredible sounds. I am subscribing to your channel. Cheers.

i recently switched from hohner to the 1847 classic. so far i am Loving the stainless reeds and also the closed sides on the cover plates as opposed to the open sides on the marine band. sweet tone on the Seydel. slowly building up a full set but while i most likely won't get rid of my Hohners i also can't really see me playing them half as much as my Seydels. speaking of those cover plates maybe i can let my tache grow back again now! lol

My daily carry is a seydel session steel in G. I dropped it and broke the comb the other day :/ going to order a new one. I like the recessed covers because they don't pull my mustache hairs. Great instrument. Also play guitar, bass, drums, and keys.

I got a seydel solist pro. 50 bucks. Its almost identical to the 1847 but with brass reeds. Once the reeds wear off i can order 1847 steel reeds, they fit. By doing all that its still cheaper than a single 1847.

I am leaning toward the new Lightening Seydel set. I have a PULMONICA already.

I agree! I find that the Seydels above "C" last incredibly long, but the high reeds in the lower keys break quite readily. I like the bigger holes.

I haven't had that issue, but each player is different for sure. I always encourage players to find what works best for them.

Is bending notes harder or easier on a stainless steel reed harmonica, Roly? Does it also require stronger airflow to play? I've heard that stainless steel reeds last much longer than brass reeds and I might make the eventual switch from Hohner to Seydel. If you can answer these questions for me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Boris. I wouldn't say any easier but I didn't find it much different than a brass reed. You definitely get the feeling that you can hit the reeds harder (I play very hard at times), so works great for me. And yes, they will last longer on average than brass reeds. Best to buy just one or tqo & see how you like it. Every player is a little different so.... I'm liking the 1847 "Classic" model these days - really nice.

Hello Mr. Platt, With the Session Steel I have to grind the cover plates in front The two corners are too high and you cut your lips. Otherwise it is good But whether Messning or steel reeds last longer I can not say anything. Greetings from Germany

I use Seydels almost exclusively at this point. I have solo12s, tuned in Brendan's Power Chromatic - which I love. I also have a grip of session steels in powerbender tuning - that I don't frankly dig as much - overall they feel less reactive than the solo 12s, or Honhers Rockets. Any suggestions in so far as set up?

Sometimes I make adjustments but to really get one playing their best (if needed), I have a pro set them up

... I have tried the all-metal harmonicas and they tasted like metal, which is not a good taste. However, the polished stainless steel reeds are very good, but they will fail and break on you just like any other reeds do. And, the 1847 Lighting is just getting way too expensive.
@RolyPlatt

Agreed, all harps will fail. Personally, I find they do last quite a bit longer than any brass reed harp.

They still don’t beat a special 20. Trust me. Harp player for 15 years and I’ve played everything. The seydel harps are about like a golden melody at best. A crossover or special 20 is still king.
