The San Francisco Giants lost a tough series to finish up their road trip, and they traded away their longest-tenured player in a somewhat surprising pre-deadline move, but ultimately yesterday was a day of excitement as Logan Webb and Heliot Ramos were named to their first All-Star teams. It's a long time coming for Webb, who's been one of the better pitchers in baseball since 2021. For Ramos, his journey from first-round pick to seemingly failed prospect to All-Star has been the best story of the season for the Giants.
The SF Giants also made headlines with a surprising trade last night. The Giants dealt Austin Slater to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for left-handed reliever and former Giant Alex Young. Slater never got things going for the Giants in 2024, and he's in his last year before free agency. The move opens up playing time for younger players like Luis Matos and Tyler Fitzgerald. It could also open up a spot for someone like Marco Luciano. In Young, the SF Giants get a pitcher with a lower salary and up to 2.5 years of team control through the arbitration process. Young has an ERA in the low 3.00s since 2022 to go along with a strong ground ball rate north of 50%.
The Giants had a solid road trip, going 3-3 through two of the better teams in baseball, but it was hard not to feel disappointed as the Giants had a chance to win both series if they could just win one of their final two games in Cleveland. In the finale, the SF Giants were in position to win, but Sean Hjelle served up a two-out, two-strike, three-run homer to pinch hitter Bo Naylor that turned a 3-2 Giants lead into a 5-3 deficit that they weren't able to overcome against Cleveland's best-in-MLB bullpen.
