One thing about SFPs, some equipment is fussy about brands. You have to make sure a particular combination will work. I have often connected single mode (yellow) fibre to a Ceina media converter and then twisted pair to a Cisco router. Back in those days, I carried a collection of fibres, single mode, multimode, SC & LC connectors, simplex & duplex cables, etc. in my vehicle.

Enhanced Small Form Pluggable (SFP+) are the same size as SFPs but support higher data rates; common with 10 Gig ethernet. There are also Quad Small Form Pluggables (QSFP)and Enhanced Quad Small Form Pluggables (QSFP+). Bi-directional QSFP and QSFP+ allow traffic in both directions with a single fiber for greater efficiency.

Of there is the practical use cases between long and short breakouts. For example a hotel can have a core router and fiber only switch and then stretch fiber to each floor. Some small business might need only have short distances and can get away with ethernet cable. Distance plays a role along with bandwidth requirements.

4:05 For the networking history buffs, there is a 30 minute talk with Bob Metcalfe (Father of Ethernet) in Sep 2021 that is quite interesting. He talks about why the vampire tap (he referred to it as the Jerrold tap) was used, as well as why Manchester encoding was used. If that is something that sounds interesting, you can search for Voices of Ethernet A Conversation with Bob Metcalfe

Haha, pretty sure some of this stuff was definitely around before I was born. I learnt a lot in one video - namely I've always wanted to know what those GBIC and AUI ports were for on some of the old Cisco gear I've seen. Also have never seen a vampire tap in real life, nor pre-10base-T technology; very cool. Obviously not very useful nowadays, but I didn't even know there were 50Gb/s interfaces and it was only recently I found out about 2.5, 5 and 25Gb/s interfaces. All fun and games. Fully modular port chassis are usually far more expensive than their fixed counterparts, but it is nice to be able to offer copper or fibre without having to buy two separate fixed switches in situations where you provide colo for example. Thanks for the video and good luck with the new channel. PS The interview are definitely not too long :D

I bought a intel x520-da2 card and 10G SFP + modules work fine, but I cant get regular 1G SFP modules to work. Since I need a specific 1G SFP module do anyone have sugestion for a BiDi SFP 1310nm-TX/1550nm-RX module that would work with my NIC? Or do I need to buy another NIC?

For what purpose would you use MPO type cables?
@DavidBombalTech
@DavidBombalTech 2 года назад
Per Fluke Networks: "MPO Connectors have been used in duplex 10 Gig fiber applications throughout the data center for several years as a way to deploy preterminated plug and play backbone cables between switches that take up less pathway space and ease cable management while offering faster deployment. In these 10 Gig applications, 12-fiber or 24-fiber trunk cables with MPO connectors on both end form the permanent backbone link and are then transitioned to duplex fiber connectors at patch panels via either MPO-to-LC cassettes or MPO-to-LC hybrid patch cords." Good video - I think it would be cool to dive more into the SFP or QSFP switch/adapter side communication and how a switch or adapter might determine they are "unsupported". Then there is the topic of SERDES and BER or bit error rate along with the signal strengths, tx bias and then what some of the most common port counters and how they can be used to troubleshoot. I also have to laugh at putting covers on the LC cable ends. I worked 10 years with FC from 1GB to 10GB and used cables in a lab that were a decade old, stepped on, tripped over and buffed out on the jeans when the ends fell into a dusty corner and did not ever get covered... Oh a manual variable fiber attenuator is a fun tool to introduce errors and study how the higher layers handle error recovery. www.qsfp-dd.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/QSFP-DD-Hardware-Rev6.2.pdf
@wysoft
@wysoft Год назад
That's funny. I work with guys that will literally throw away an LC patch if the tips touch something. One guy carries around an LC cleaning tool and won't even use a fresh out of the bag patch until he's cleaned it. I really don't think they're that fragile.
@lamerdan
@lamerdan Год назад
Yeah not that fragile at all. A lot of equipment will let you look at some details about what the SFP reports. Some cisco equipment will show details with "show int X/X transceiver detail" If you want to be cruel, have those guys with LC cable OCD cleaning syndrome look at those stats and tell them you want them to work on getting them perfect. I know int the infancy of 10Gig ethernet the SFP vendors committed to allow a 10 to the -12 power bit error rate. That is one in a trillion bits are allowed to have an error. That is an error ever 78.5 seconds at 10Gb/s when 8b/10b encoding is used. Also if you have some lab equipment, setup a test for those folks monitoring the SFP stats and such as you pass traffic and mess with a bunch of cables to show how actually violent you need to be before a cable is the fault of errors.
