This is an arrangement of a pibroch/piobaireachd composed by William Barrie (1910 - 2004). The arrangement is by Matt Welch who also conducts this performance by Simon University University Pipe Band in their pre-Worlds concert in Glasgow in 2023. The arrangement is an update of the one performed by the band on its 2001 Down Under recording from the Sydney Opera House.
The original piobaireachd is published in William and James Barrie's A Lifetime of Compositions (2001).
The arrangement includes canntaireachd (singing/chanting) based on the ancient method of teaching and learning piobaireachd before the introduction of staff notation for piping around 1800. A piobaireachd is an extended musical form based on a theme or pattern of notes which is extended by a series of repetitions and variations incorporating increasingly complex grace notes and embellishments. It sometimes reminds me of the increasingly complex singing of the male capercaillie.
In this arrangement the singing alternates with solo and group bagpipes, with solo side drum and bass drum and an electronic drone throughout.

Everyone Please Please Do Yourself A Favour & Skip To 3.20 In Before You Start Listening To That Utter Nonsense & Skip The Ending Where They Start Singing Again. I Can't Figure Out Why On Earth Pipe Bands Think "You Know What's Going To Be An Amazing Idea, Getting A Bunch Of Us To Sing Like We Are Doing Some Weird Canntaireachd Thing, We Will Do It At The Concert" Please If You Are A Pipe Band Going To Be Doing A Concert Don't Do This, It's Cringe.

A “pile band” has no clue how to do this. The best concert pipe band gets to do what they want. You don’t have to like nor listen. But if you complain please spell properly and make a valid argument.

@@doctorbagpipedr.matthewwel3028 spelling, is that the best you've got, a typing mistake. Clearly you knew what I wrote. People who correct people's spelling when they want to "tell someone off" because they didn't like what they said are possibly the lowest of the low. Attack the argument not the typo. Sad mate, very sad. As for what you said, No a Pipe Band cannot just do "whatever they want", regardless of their level. You can remove the stick from your backside now. Ta ta & fair well.

why can't they play what they choose? did you hire them for this show to play something specific? did you attend the show? the response was overwhelmingly positive and attended by 2500 people. I'm still waiting for your valid argument as to why this is utter nonsese and why they can't do it. William Barrie composed this in the 20th century and sang it on his own album. so what tradition does this tune represent or supposed to adhere to? It is easy to criticize innovation in piping. removing the stick from my backside, now you try make it personal. how about perform this music yourself, find an audience to appreciate it, post something on your own site (which has nothing) and make a real musical statement instead of trolling on others'. Everyone do yourself a favor and crank the vocal sections and check out John Parr's massive collection of youtube videos demonstrating what pipe bands should do in concert. @@johnparr347yrsand2

@@doctorbagpipedr.matthewwel3028 Where Did I Say that they Cannot do what they did!? They can actually do as they please , it may not make sense but if they all wanted to Mic up their ass and fart one at a time then shit all over the stage & March through it whilst playing wooden heart then I wouldn't stop them. I just think it would be dreadful, just as dreadful as their stupid singing infact. Please everyone, follow your heart and soul, do as you wish, inflict The pain on your ears If you want or don't but don't think for a second you have to obey @doctorbagpipdr.matthewwel3028 I also didn't mention anything about tradition either. You'll have to explain why you like putting words into other people's mouths, it's not big & it certainly is not clever. I also owe you precisely Nothing Sir so with that I'll say, Good day to you.

It could be worse... My band did a thing once where two pipers played the ground and first variation of "Lament for the Old Sword" while the Drum Major's scantily clad girlfriend swooned around the stage making love to a claymore in some sort of interpretive modern dance .. no canntaireachd, but it was painful to watch and the audience was thoroughly confused. I agree with you that this is "odd"... Canntaireachd is a beautiful thing, but I don't believe it was intended to be sung by a choir to an audience. There is nothing wrong with including a Piobaireachd portion in a bagpipe concert, but I'd prefer to hear it the "normal" way; I don't care for the harmonies. Perhaps the SOLO piper could sing a few lines of Canntaireachd as a demonstration, but let's be honest; it's beyond the scope of most pipers, so I don't think the audience is getting much out of it. If "singing in a language the crowd doesn't understand" must be included, they could've sang a nice old Gaelic song, imo.

Upon the second viewing, it looks and sounds sillier than it did the first time. Canntaireachd is a teaching tool for serious students... The idea of having a director directing a choir to sing it in a strict and unnatural rhythm is anathema to what Canntaireachd is; it's not meant for this kind of Hollywood nonsense.

Well, they're Canadians, so whatever... They can do what they want. They love this kind of cheesy "Broadway" thing, so let them have their fun. They win a lot of competitions; they basically own the piping world. They will eventually succeed in ruining everything, but slowly, eh?
