Elliot was likely thinking of "The Two Mousketeers". That was one of the infamous episodes known for its dark ending. The "weird" Tom and Jerry episodes you might be referring to are the Gene Deitch episodes. There were only 13 made but I can vividly remember them as the ones where Tom had a very short-tempered and abusive owner.

It's not that One Piece is good after 50 episodes, it's that the style and feel of the show and what you can expect out of it for the long run is fully displayed after 50 episodes. Arlong Park is the first "Big Event". Most people enjoy One Piece when they start and then when Arlong Park happens they realize that they're locked in for the full show. Therefore, if you get to Arlong Park, and you're still not really "INTO" One Piece after it's done, then everyone agrees that you shouldn't try to go further.

Man, you guys talking about Tom & Jerry made me remember the days I used to watch 90s/early 2000s Cartoon Network. I miss those days. Cow and Chicken, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Kids Next Door, Ed Edd & Eddy...

Tom & Jerry is super old, but they've been constantly making new stuff, aside from the classical shorts and Chuck Jones stuff. In the 90's you had Tom & Jerry Kids, the mid-00's had Tom & Jerry Tales, the mid-10's had The Tom & Jerry Show, and currently there are four different T&J series either airing or being made. There's Tom & Jerry in New York (animated spinoff of the live-action movie from a few years ago) on HBO Max, a series of anime shorts for CN Japan, another series made for Southeast Asian/Australia markets, and Tom & Jerry Time for Cartoonito (Cartoon Network's preschool block).

Tom and Jerry I definitely feel have suffered through a dark age after the original Hanna Barbara shorts. But I think there’s a a bit of good material in the 2000’s. That being said.. there’s a lot of old Tom and Jerry stuff that should stay in the past mostly due to stereotypes so beware if you watch the complete spotlight collection.

Also, my opinion of Tom & Jerry is that I do enjoy the classic shorts, but I also have a soft spot for the made-for-TV movies released during the 2000s. Whether it be The Magic Ring, Blast Off to Mars, or Shiver Me Whiskers, they all have a sense of charm. My favorite's The Fast & the Fury, both for the crearuve cast of supporting characters and the hilarious number of ways they die.

The old Tom and Jerry shorts were childhood staples during afternoons and sometimes nights where I kept watching Cartoon Network during after school hours. And even then I noticed quite the sheer disparity between the OG Hanna Barbera shorts, the Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones ones. HB and CJ were the more common ones, so any rare instance of a GD short airing was a weird treat.

I pretty much agree with Johnny. When it comes to Tom and Jerry, the Bill Hanna/Joe Barbera cartoons from 1940-1958 are the gold standard for those characters.

So to clarify the One Piece thing. Not to spoil anything, but the "Arlong Arc" is literally the biggest emotional punch to that point in the anime and really paints how the anime is going forward. A lot of fun, action, and depression.

I agree with the majority of One Piece fans that give it until the end of Arlong Park. That's still well before the actual plot kicks off, but there's one single moment that everyone says this is where the series hooked me. However, Netflix is working with Wit Studio on a new anime remake that is basically One Piece's equivalent of the 2011 Hunter x Hunter. Maybe hold out for that one, but since it's not out yet, I can't judge its quality.

Okay, so I, as of today, recently caught up with one piece. It can take a while, but one thing everyone who hasn’t watched doesn’t realize is that each episode is roughly 20min. Yes It is over 1100 episodes, but it has some of the best character stories in media. And yes, if you aren’t enjoying it to some degree by the time you finish Arlong then it might not be for you, but some of its best beats are after Arlong. So what I say to you Uncle, DO IT! WATCH ONE PIECE YOU COWARD!

When it comes to Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry i can't watch either these days, watched them back in high school and loved em. I tried watching more recently and i didn't laugh cause i already knew what was going to happen.

I still never got the argument of "I don't want to watch something cause it has so many episodes". Its like just watch a little at a time, if its not for you then just stop BUT if you do like it then its just more content to watch. I personally think its a great watch but the beginning can be rather slow. Honestly if yall waited this long though, you should wait for the remake series they're making as it'll be faster pace and cut down on filler.

A 50 episode Gundam series? Sure. Over 1000 episodes of the same show that honestly has me a bit turned off by the art style? Unlikely. I might be willing to commit to finishing Bleach but that’s about it.

I still don't get why OP has to be treated that much different compared to any other anime show. Expecially since I've seen too many people around trashing anything else compared to their sacred One Piece.

love avatar but yeah agree with matt on that oof to korra(outside a few characters/toph returning.) as it's the equivalent of queen's blade rebellion to me in that it's a follow up that feels like it could've remembered more of the previous series(mostly older characters return.)/weaker lead though i enjoyed korra herself at times. think elliot's thinking of the tom & jerry(love the theatrical shorts/chuck jones was alright but constantly thought of the grinch with tom's look & outside a few hated the gene deitch shorts especially that asshole owner as the sound effects were creepy though surprised they happened before cj.) short where they meet the mouse that helped them against those 3 dogs.

my favorite knowledge relearning about Tom and Jerry was the crazy behind the censorship on certain parts. Sometimes Tom is owned by a black Woman, but then the censorship is somehow a White Woman. And then in the chuck jones era Tom is owned by a family, mainly a Husband and a Wife.
