Only reason PSA is #1 is because we, the consumer of their slabs, put a higher premium on them forcing us to grade with them more to make more $$$. It's really our own fault that PSA is #1. We need to stop differentiating their slabs as worth more money. It literally makes no sense. Why would their 10 be worth more than another company's 10. SGC grades are more reliable, whereas PSA is all over the place, which would value the SGC card as "better."
@@jasober86SGC slabs are cheap unfortunately. They can be popped open with little to no effort, and thicker slabs leave cards super loose. I’ve used them a lot but the cases are pretty cheap.
I have a 29 card submission I just sent to PSA. I was about to send in 13 cards to SGC (mostly early 90's Jordan's) but now I don't know if to go ahead or hold off. The only good thing that can come of this, in my opinion, is if people start giving the SGC slab the same value as a PSA. Will they? I don't think so, too much conditioning has gone on over the last 20+ years that PSA = best. My other worry is that Collectors bought SGC not only their vintage business, but for their location. You ship your cards to PSA and they're going to California. You ship them to SGC and they're going to Sarasota, FL. Living an hour north of SGC here in Tampa, FL, it's been a great experience with turnaround times for me. I'm worried they bought them to have an East Coast pressence so they can plow through cards and service to the East Coast more quickly.
Several people have floated the rumor that Collectors purchased SGC to operate as they currently are but also to utilize their folks to grade under the PSA name and reduce PSA backlog! Interesting.
Payout for Peter, SGC has capital backing now to grow (new equipment costs, etc.), and prevents Fanatics from buying SGC. Short-term I see no change, long term, 2 or 3 years down the line, if SGC isn't holding up that great or Collectors fails to prop them up, they will fold it into PSA. Or they change/market SGC to be their vintage side. PSA also gains quick access to a group of experienced graders that they don't have to train too. Mainly I think this is a safety block to Fanatics and ensures that Collectors and PSA stay needed and relevant for the long term.
Great video Omar! The slab crossover (psa/sgc) is another interesting niche that im probably never going to do. If i have any 9.5s i want to crosser over, its going to be a straight crack/resub to risk the lower grade.
@@SamuelJ888 Yeah, it's only worth submitting rare cards for grading nowadays. Glad I've not submitted cards for grading recently. Have about 1000 cards that need grading, which has probably reduced to 600 due to price declines
Typical "Money Grab" by PSA...Just when a competing company starts to make grading better, PSA buys them out...SGC was charging less, with a faster turn around than PSA...with their GREED, PSA struck a blow to the very consumers that make them millions!...I for one , am boycotting PSA...I suggest you all do the same...have a nice day!
I for one will not be using either PSA or SGC any longer. I will go to CSG and be more then happy about it. I will never let my cards be ruined by shotty fake grades from PSA
Absolutely horrible for the hobby. Been rumblings for a few weeks about sgc customer service issues. But I see people hating on Peter. He doesn’t own the company this wasn’t his call.
Brent Martin in customer services is atrocious. Completely wasted my time submitting to SGC. They couldn't be bothered to grade my cards because they were too busy
What's this mean for you? It means higher prices. The top 2 now have, what, 90% or more of the market so they can set the price. They're certainly not going to compete with themselves. It's always been this way for any business...less competition equals higher prices.
Not True, if you look at monthly sports card only that were graded PSA held only a 4.65X advantage of SGC and PSA had lost a lot of their PRE-1980s Grading to SGC over the past couple of years.
Thanks for telling us you have the mind of a 10 year old. PSA isn’t the best grading company, they are the most used. Why? Easy 10s because of a simplistic, antiquated grading scale that made sense to smooth-brained investors. That’s it.
Yeah I’m not sure I agree with the Gnat comparison. But SGC was definitely a worthy adversary to PSA. IF SGC decided to update its slab, and lower prices just below PSA they could have taken a sizable amount of business from that. Not to mention if they decided to partner up with fanatics and go that route that would have been crazy. Also if they would have joined up with CGC or collectively joined up with Beckett AND CGC that would have been a threat to PSA.
2021 Omar with through out of PSA at 6 months and $100 grading thinks this is a TERRIBLE idea. 2024 Omar still thinks this isn’t best for the hobby BUT I could see from a business standpoint why both sides agreed to a deal

We both know that's not going to happen. There may be a slight uptick in SGC 10's from people who are like "Well PSA bought them so they must have faith in their grades", but it'll never be a 1 to 1 equality. SGC 10's will still be 10-25% behind PSA 10's on anything post 1987
Universal registry. Now set collectors can add those amazing SGC slabs to their collections without cross over. This will bring SGC fanboys into the registry. You just made a video on registry soon you can add your SGC slabs. This is a smart move that will grow hobby and values for both
If SGC collectors cared about the registry. They would have just bought from PSA. The reason they didn't wasn't just because of the set registry, but PSA awful fees, upcharges, and shitty customer service.
They won’t be. SGC will be absorbed by PSA and the Boca location will be PSAs south-east location. PSA will then raise all of their fees and their service days will get longer. Why? Why not. It’s not like PSA cultists will stop using them.
Crazy times. PSA might have bought SGC before someone else did? CGC has deep pockets. If they bought SGC, they could have the tcg side of things with cgc, and the sports card side of things with SGC. Now that would be an interesting combination if your talking about competition for PSA.
SGC gold label sells gifher than PSA 10 so whatever. Most PSA 10s arent. Who cares about rhe arguement, people that dont understand what this means dont matter in the CONVO!!!

Well the way I see it is. Panini name is on the bottom of just about every ultra modern cards out there. Topps still doing what they do. Remember fleer/score products helped create what we know, this monster called sports cards collecting today. score jus makes football cards for now and fleer products like ultra has been discontinued. U can't blame sgc, because changes happen every so, decades no matter what.
