I was replying to a comment about it looks Japanese, here is what I said: "Chinese had sophisticated rituals in ancient time ca 400 BC but not sure exactly what it would be like since there is no videos back then. Japanese learned a lot of stuff from China in ancient time such as tea, sword, sampo wrestling, architecture, Buddhism, language, the dresses, even chopsticks. I wouldn't be surprised if Japanese archery ritual was learned from ancient Chinese. I hope I don't sound arrogant, but Japan did preserve a lot of Chinese rituals."

Ragarding the people saying this is made up, here is some news flash for you. Archery as a sport isn't only a Japanese thing. In most, if not all nations/cultures who have a developed culture of archery, shooting a bow competitively is never a doubt something that has occurred. It's not a master plan or anything, just human nature. Whenever you have something that requires skill to operate, people will make a sport out of it. Now whether or not the Chinese performed their archery contests in the way this video showed is debatable, but considering the fact that Chinese archery has been around way before Japan even developed their first archery warfare means it's more than likely that China has some form of ceremonial importance relating/involving archery.

Ancient Chinese people attached great importance to archery and elevated it to the level of a national ceremony, known as the 射禮"Archery Ceremony". The emperor of Zhou held a large-scale ceremony every year, and all the princes and ministers participated in the shooting ceremony. Since then, this tradition has been inherited by successive dynasties. Archery is also one of the two military-related skills among the 六藝 six skills that Confucius believed a gentleman must master. Archery and chariot driving, because the main form of warfare in Confucius' time was chariot warfare between nobles.

The rituals of the Japanese imperial court resemble those of the Chinese, but the rituals of the samurai do not. First, we need to recognize that the Imperial Court and samurai culture are two different things. The Imperial Court sent an envoy to China in the Nara period (710-794) to embrace Chinese culture, which is similar to Chinese rituals. Samurai, on the other hand, originated from local powerful families, and samurai were most influenced by the culture of the Emishi, who lived in the ancient Tohoku region. In fact, their swords, helmet decorations, and horsemanship were influenced by the culture of the Emishi. Furthermore, the rituals in the video resemble those of the Edo period in Japan, but if they were influenced by the Chinese, they must have imitated the rituals of the Heian period in Japan. In fact, the rituals of the Edo period are very different from those of the Heian period.

This is a chinese bow, you can see that the middle part of the bow is shorter than the mongolian bow and that the bow had a longer end than the mongolian bow. The japanese bow are longer and not curved just like korean long bows. I think you are confusing the way he drew the bow with the japanese kyudo tradition. But these way of drawing was common in archery ceremony with minor difference, on which the japanese uses their hand to draw, while here the chinese uses the thumb.

@@thefantasyreview8709 yeah. But there is a slightly mistake in your statement. In china, archery has two types, one for combat and another for important ceremonies or gatherings of Scholar-Bureaucrats. The later one disappearred with the end of Ming dynasty, on the one hand it's because of the loss of Chinese culture, on the other hand Qing dynasty unified the shape of the bow(for the first time in Chinese history). However, the former one did not disappear and lasts today. There are a large amount of old Qing bows still exist and some of them can still shoot. And many people know how to make these bows, or how to shoot them. Sadly, how Chinese people shoot before Qing can only be seen in ancient books or arts. Pity.

I don't know a lot about pre-manchu archery, but these are clearly Chinese bows and clothing. But I know what you mean about the ressemblance to Kyudo. However, this isn't surprising if you know how muchJapan was a copy of early China. The legendary city of Kyoto was a copy of the Chinese Forbidden City, Japanese clothing is pretty much like the mode up to the Song dynasty, the Katana is basically a curved Chinese Heng Dao, tea ceremony and the love for cherry blossoms comes from there too... The difference is that the Mongol invasion of China (and the later Manchu occupation) changed it a lot, while Japan retained much of its Chinese origin. So if we want to be really precise, Kyudo is surely more a copy of Chinese archery than the reverse.

Chinese had sophisticated rituals in ancient time ca 400 BC but not sure exactly what it would be like since there is no videos back then. Japanese learned a lot of stuff from China in ancient time such as tea, sword, sampo wrestling, architecture, Buddhism, language, the dresses, even chopsticks. I wouldn't be surprised if Japanese archery ritual was learned from ancient Chinese. I hope I don't sound arrogant, but Japan did preserve a lot of Chinese rituals.

@@jasonhuang6078The Japanese do not deny the origins of much of their culture. However, the Japanese took much of the cultural imports from China, and stamped it with their own creative genius. That is why, the modern Kimono does not resemble the Hanfu. Why Japanese houses don't resemble traditional Chinese houses. Even Japanese chopsticks do not look like Chinese choptsticks. Everything from the language, the etiquette, the food they eat, etc, does not resembke what one finds in China. With few exceptions, there has been a cultural disconnect in China, brought on by the Manchu takeover in 1644,the disasters of the 20th century, like the Cultural Revolution, which just about destroyed what few traces remained of traditional Chinese culture. There was no Cultural Revolution in Japan, where they tried to do away with old customs, traditions and culture. In Japan for instance, one encounters craftsmen and artisans, or actors in Noh, Kabuki and Bunraku, who come from a long, unbroken line of practitioners, so the tradition is kept alive through familial transmission. This sort of continuum is hard to find in China, which is why they are doing what they can do in reconstructing and recreating the ancient culture, that appeals more to modern sensibilities then the overly decorated and ornate taste of the Ch'ing and modern Chinese.

@@jasonhuang6078 The Japanese bow evolved from a simple wood bow and evolved into a synthetic bow of bamboo and wood, and because of its vertical asymmetry, it can be seen as a unique evolution that does not resemble any bow in the world. The posture after the bow branch is fired is also due to the unique nature of the Japanese bow which rotates the bow, and there is no necessity in the Chinese bow. Chinese bows are a composite of tree and buffalo horns and animal Achilles tendons. The bow itself is only a standard human culture that existed in ancient Egypt. It is arrogant and foolish to say that China originated.

She Dao or Chinese Archery is one of the Six arts in Chinese Confucianism and has been since the Zhou dynasty (1046 BC - 256 BC) the reason it’s similar to Kyudo is because it was the influence for kyudo. Japan is in the sinosphere which also include the Koreas and Vietnam all of these countries and their cultures have historically been majorly influenced by China. Chinese archery is lesser known than kyudo but it didn’t copy kyudo.

Thank you for your knowledge, clarity and well grounded post. What so many fail to comorehend is the cultural influence of Chungkuo. The Middle Kingdom. China. The Sinosphere. China IS the Greece and Rome of Eastern Asia. China gave these countries the basis of much of the cutural framework of Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. Japan did not have a system of writing until China gave them one. When Japanese ambassadors first visited T'ang China, they were so blown away by the magnificence, glory and sosphistication to their own rustic culture, that they embarked upon importing Chinese culture wholesale. This policy continued, with a few breaks, up until the end of the Ming Dynasty, when the Japanese felt that Ch'ing Dynasty China had nothing new to teach them. The break that vame about from the Manchu takeover, explains the wide divergence, since China became Manchunized in some ways, while Japan and Korea, continued in their traditions. This explains why the Korean court, and what officials wore in Okinawa, retained their Ming Dynasty manner of formal dressing. The Manchus remained in power from 1644 until 1911, and their accent is still present whenever people think about Chinese culture. It is interesting to note from observations from the Japanese who visited China, during the late 19th century and before the war. They found it difficult in reconciliating the modern Chinese, with classical Chinese. They, and many westerners, were not overly impressed with them, and found it hard to believe that these were the same people built the Great Wall, or created classical Chinese civilization. In fact, Westerners could always tell the difference between the Manchus and the Chinese, by their height, the lighter shade of their skins and the way the Manchus carried themselves.
