Hey guys! It's Danny & Niamh back again. This is our reaction to Shōgun episode two, 'Servants of Two Masters'.
First of all thank you to all of you who tuned in to our initial premiere of this reaction on Monday 22 April. Unfortunately the video was copyrighted midway through that and we've since had to reupload. It is unfortunately an occupational hazard for channels like ours.
But we are loving this series so far and can't wait to see how it unfolds.
We will be releasing new Shōgun episode reactions every Monday from here on in (Copyright allowing).

The two baths in short succession was actually an issue because in England and other parts of europe at this time, they got things like dysentery and other diseases usually coming from standing water and other sources of less ideal make. But in Japan, they usually bath in running water or hot springs at this time.

1:24 Yes, the Shoguns were pretty much Japan's version of Rome's Caesars. They controlled much -- if not all -- of Japan's politics, economics, and social structures at the time. Unlike Rome however, Japan had a pre-existing line of Emperors that were allowed to continue. Their power and influence were greatly diminished though, and were relegated to managing the cultural and artistic aspects of Japan's way of life.

Taiko was the title given to a retired Kampaku, the chief advisor and first secretary to the Emperor. The Taiko had also been the military leader, practically wielding the power of a Shogun, though he was never able to claim the title as he came from a low-born peasant background. While the Emperor was still technically the head of the nation, he was more of a figurehead at the time, with little practical power, as all the armed forces answered to the Shogun/Taiko.

Not the Emperor. At no point in time is the Imperial Succession or the Imperial Throne involved in this book/series. Not at all. The Emperor is safe on the Chrysanthemum Throne with a pedigree heritage which is the most careful guarded of all Japanese treasures. The Emperor at this point is cloistered, though, so much like the modern English throne, the Emperor reigns, but does not rule. This is the battle for Supreme Prime Minister of Japan. The man who actually governs.

The series is so good. Glad to see you reacting to it. The acting, writing, cinematography costumes, all off the charts. // One thing that's not brought up much is the music, which was composed by Atticus Ross. He won two Oscars for the scores of "Soul" (plus the BAFTA, Golden Globe & Grammy) & "The Social Network" with Trent Reznor.

for some history it is more than likely the Queen of England at the time this show is set is Elizebeth the first protestant, before her it would have been her sister Mary aka Bloody Mary who was catholic and is responsible for hundreds of protestant Christians to be burned at the stake.

no , 3:43 they were not friends really, they are kind of in a power struggle. The regency council is designed to prevent toranaga from ursurping the power.
