Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

Thing is as a history buff you can tell from just these trailers they have 1000000% had historical advice on this, even the tiniest detail looks perfect based on the time period

Grew up watching the original tv series with the late Richard Chamberlain. This looks promising and maybe a little more than what the original series had.

@@tsmithkc he didn't write the script or his own lines. That's what I'm referring to. The dialogue in the 80's miniseries sounds like it was written by Americans who only studied Japanese at basic to mid level. Like they didn't care about how Japanese actually spoke during that Era.

the original was excellent for two reasons which this newer version cannot replicate. the original was shot in Japan. second, there is a deliberate language barrier used in the first to give it realness. the new Mariko has an English accent and speaks fluent English which just isn't realistic. the old Mariko has a clear japanese accent in her English and you can see her struggle to use English which in itself is quite beautiful.

However, what they are speaking in the book and series isn't English, but Portuguese and Latin, which Mariko is very fluent in and speaks with little accent.

It's supposed to be a series about a book, not a remake of the original interpretation. The older show was good, but it MASSIVELY lacked narrative depth because it chose to fly without subtitles. Some of the best scenes in the entire book are the moments where Japanese characters interact amongst themselves without Blackthorne around. I think this one will be able to explore the book much better.

@@jeremyhall2727 You really need to read up on the history of William Adams in Japan, that was the historical figure this is based on. Yes, he did become a samurai that was allowed to carry daisho, and yes he did hold land and was given an allowance by Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Thank god for a tv show that isn't preaching politics. I've read the book and this show looks amazing. Hollywood, just make good stories and people will love it. No need for a writing room of 20 'diverse people who write for a political agenda. That is why Hollywood is failing right now. It's obvious. Make good shows and everyone will love them

Netflix's Marco Polo was call "Chinese Game of Thrones" a few years ago before it got cancelled after two seasons. Although difficult to judge after 2 episodes of Shogun I felt Marco Polo was better overall.
