So, a couple things. First, Steven you sold yourself short! You're doing a great job keeping up with subtitles and following the story in two languages. Personally, i cant watch something and follow along WITHOUT subtitles, but even i found myself pausing to read or rewinding to get a better grasp on the dialogue. So big ups on you! Second, im still trying to get used to you guys calling Toranaga Yoshii lol but no big deal. Also, you guys were both right at the beginning regarding the Captain. Nikki is right that the captain was dying anyway along with his crew and perhaps rightly, just to hasten the outcome. But Steven was right as well like dude took the easy way out, and we see it from John's perspective and John doesnt respect it at all. Which is a great juxtaposition to his reaction to Yabu almost committing sepuku later on in the episode. Everybody always recognizes Nestor Carbonell from Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy as if Richard Alpert isn't one of the greatest characters of all time! The fact that Toranaga came with his own translator to keep the other translator honest is just next level superior intelligence. He knew Padre would know full well that Mariko understands both him and the anjin, leaving him unable to twist any words even if he wanted to. Also it's such brilliant storytelling to establish a scenario with honest translations and then have the translators fall away completely so that its as if Toranaga and the anjin are speaking directly to each other. I remember getting inexplicable chills the first time i watched that transition happen. To Nikki's point, i love that the writer's KNOW we don't need to see every beheading. They caught us off guard with homie losing his head OUT OF NOWHERE (caught John off guard too) in the first episode, they already did their job there, so we know without seeing that beheadings be happening. They dont hold our hands, and at the same time nothing is gratuitous. Everything is imforming something else later on. Yabu making moves 😂 always. That moment he pays the bandits only to immediately kill them is so baller. Im sure him and his many grunting noises will quickly become a favorite of yours. "Unless I win."

The novel is very closely based on history. The major characters; Torunaga (Yoshii Torunaga), John Blackthorne, Mariko, Ishido, Ochiba, the Taiko etc., are all based on real people. There was a council of five regents after the death of the Taiko, there was a rivalry between the men who Torunaga and Ishido are based on. There was a treaty that divided all non-Christian lands between Spain and Portugal. Brazil speaks Portuguese because they were east of the line, while everything west 'belonged' to Spain, and therefore most of the rest of South America speaks Spanish. And there were meetings between the real-life John and real-life Torunaga.

Nikki and Steven I am a couple of decades older than you. But no they did not teach this kind of things in school. I learned about them by going to the library on my own and looking up things in the WORLD BOOK Encyclopedia :D That treaty is VERY historically accurate. It is the reason that they speak Portuguese in Brazil and the rest of North and South American speak ( other than the U.S. and Canada and some Caribbean Islands) Spanish. The line of division left a large part of what is now Brazil in the Portuguese part of the world.

If you find yourself suffering from Shogun withdrawal once you're done with the show, there's always the 1980s version starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune, and John Rhys-Davies (he played Gimli in LOTR as you know) in a smaller but very important role. I grew up watching the 1980s miniseries so obviously it has a special place in my heart, but I also liked the remake very much. There are some key "scenes" from the novel (which I've also read several times) that I think are much better in the 80s series, and some were just straight up omitted in the new one. Other scenes or events are moved back or ahead in the new series, and it isn't always obvious why they did that (at least not to me). Then again, there are some scenes in the new version that are in the novel, but skipped partly or completely in the 80s one. So, all in all, I say the old and the new series complement eachother, and I definitely recommend everyone to watch both.

All of the main characters in the show are based on actual historical figures. Although my understanding is that not all of the actual historical figures actually met or interacted with each other. So, the historical context is all accurate but the particular story is not necessarily true. And, yes, it's a good idea not to go looking up the actual history at this point since you may run into spoilers.

I think they covered their eyes before beheading them as an act of courtesy for those watching. There is a shock among viewers in seeing the face of a person who dies violently that stays with them for years, if not the rest of their lives. The bag or blindfold grants those the ability to see justice carried out, but not the horror of what that ‘justice’ does. For the condemned, it’s a final moment of private reflection before the sentence is carried out. It might also be an act of humanity for the condemned as well. The optic nerves are directly connected to your brain. So a beheaded person can see everything, including his own beheaded, bleeding body, as his head rolls off in the ground. Imagine that being the last image ingrained in your brain before you pass on…

There are no spoilers for the future, but this is a bit of a long post. Historically speaking, Japan was in the Sengoku period, which lasted for about 140 years, and wars were raging all over the country over territories. In 1534, a man appeared who would end this Sengoku period. It was Oda Nobunaga. He was the most genius military commander in Japanese history, and had all the elements. He was an innovative man who developed Japan, not only in military affairs, but also in economy, diplomacy, governance, culture, and art. The main character of this program, Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga), made an alliance with him and was always in awe of him. Now, the sick man who appeared at the beginning of the program, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Taiko), was originally from a poor farming family, but in 1554, he became a subordinate of Oda Nobunaga in order to become a samurai. His cheerful personality and ability to charm people, as well as being hardworking, smart, and quick-witted, gradually helped him rise through the ranks. Going back to the main topic, Oda Nobunaga's clan was just one of many small feudal lords in the country, and Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga), the protagonist of this program, was in a similar situation. As mentioned above, the two men formed an alliance in 1562. Around 1580, Oda Nobunaga, along with his excellent subordinates and his ally Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga), defeated many rivals and gained control of two-thirds of Japan. In the same year, in order to unify the country, Oda Nobunaga gave each of his excellent subordinates an army and began military operations to seize the remaining territories (Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Taiko) was one of them). While each army was steadily progressing with its invasion, Oda Nobunaga himself was staying in Kyoto (where the Emperor lived at the time and was the center of Japan) and taking command of the whole operation, but he was betrayed by one of his subordinates, a military commander named Akechi Mitsuhide. On June 2, 1582, Oda Nobunaga was ambushed in the middle of the night and fought with a small force until halfway through the battle, but realized his death was near and committed suicide. He burned his body along with the Honnoji temple where he was staying, refusing to hand his body over to the enemy (Akechi Mitsuhide's army of 13,000 men vs. Oda Nobunaga's army of 160 men). This is called the Honnoji Incident. Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) was also in Kyoto at the time and was nearly killed, but managed to escape. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Taiko), who was out at war as the general of one of his troops, heard the news and immediately made peace with the enemy and returned to Kyoto before anyone else. He then fought the traitor Akechi Mitsuhide and won the battle. Akechi Mitsuhide died here. Akechi Mitsuhide's daughter was Hosokawa Gracia (Mariko). In other words, she was a great figure and the daughter of a traitor who killed her lord, Oda Nobunaga. As a result, her relationship with her husband deteriorated and she was distanced from her children. To ease her suffering, she became a Christian. Now, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Taiko), who had defeated his lord's enemy, demonstrated his true power from this point on, conquering the remaining territories through political strategy and war, and unifying the country. At that time, Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga) had become a major daimyo. There were some skirmishes with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was aiming to rule the country, but Toyotomi Hideyoshi appeased Tokugawa Ieyasu by doubling his territory, and eventually made him his subordinate. However, at the beginning of the program, in 1598, while on his sickbed, he passed away. At that time, he left a will that the country be ruled by the Five Elders. That's the story so far.

Hey man, don't beat yourself up. LOL School was many years ago for me too. Maybe a decade more than you. I was a smart kid who focused on his books. All I can say is... they didn't teach this in school. lol They mostly focused on Western civilization with a real quick glossing over of Asian civilizations. Even in college the "default" seemed to be Western civilization while history in other parts of the world was limited to like maybe one or two other professors. The first time I ever heard names like Nobunaga, Tokugawa or Sekigahara was in anime like 20 years ago. It's nice to be this old with a useless college degree, and still learning history albeit through a dirty filter of entertainment. Without giving away spoilers, I can say that the Japanese producers on this show spared no expense in making this as period-accurate as possible from the props to the costumes down to the mannerisms and even the way they're speaking period-correct Japanese.

No. Toranaga-sama's strike was a death blow. It just took a bit for her to finally succumb. If Toranaga-sama had wanted to keep her alive he would have chopped her knife hand off instead of slashing her neck. Just by appearing where he thought an assassin would, she gave Toranaga-sama all the info he needed.

This remake strays from the book quite a bit. This one attempts to tell the story more from the viewpoint of the Japanese characters. The original series was very true to the book and was told more from the viewpoint of Blackthorne. I preferred the original miniseries but this is very good too. And the book is fantastic.

A little background - I studied Japanese history and culture for my degree and have written several articles on the topic, so I consider myself somewhat educated on the real-life basis of the Shogun. So, I'll try to keep this spoiler-free: -Yes, all the characters are real, but their names have been changed - as in the novel. Blackthorn too - he is based on William Adams, the first Englishman in Japan. Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu, the third unifier of Japan. The Taiko in the series is Toyotomi Hideyoshi in real life, the second unifier. But I recommend watching the series without the real names, because it is still fiction - historically accurate to some extent, yes, but fiction. -Christianity in Japan at this time is not as strong in reality as it appears in the show - Clavell, the author of the novel, overdid this theme - in reality, Christianity has kind of weakened its influence on Japanese culture and ideology, but hey, it's still fiction And yes, the Spain-Portugal pact is real. So this theme is QUITE accurate, but overdone. -The roles of women in this show are not as inaccurate as some people think - in fact, female warriors in Japanese culture are already something of a 13th century thing, but it's still not that important in the grand scheme of things. As for the period in the show - we know of some real female authorities, but in Japanese culture a lot is subject to rules of conduct, etiquette, and a strict hierarchy, where women can have a lot of rights and not so much - it's all relative. In the show, a lot of the actions of the female characters are on the edge of what is allowed in reality, sometimes even going beyond that - although not as much as many people think. And yes, women are silent killers, as shown in the second episode, but still a fantasy - Japanese women could be silent killers, but rather by killing the victim in his sleep, through seduction and the like. Still fiction. -In general, both the series and the original novel show the real events of the described period of time with the described characters in sufficient detail and accurately, but this is still a historical romanticization of the work - so it will perfectly show and tell the general essence of what happened, change the names to real ones - and you can say that you already know what happened in general terms. If you want, study the real history behind the novel and the series, and you will learn many details that are not so poetic, but more realistic, or just get an excellent story based on it. -Japan, during the period that the series shows, is a rather cruel country. Mass battles, death, torture and executions were the norm, as well as the murder of women and children - this is not the most beautiful side of history, but the series and the novel show them without embellishment and without much ceremony. Just a warning, although the first two episodes have already shown this fact in detail. I hope I was able to answer your questions without spoilers. And I apologize if my language is not very convenient for perception - English is only my second language, and I have little practice communicating in it, I mainly only read, watch something or translate in it.

Nikki and Stephen. The show that you are watching now is a somewhat fictionalized account of how the Tokugawa Shogunate came to power. The Shogun's real name was Ieyshu Tokugawa.( My spelling may be wrong) Tokugawa and his descendants basically ruled Japan for the next 300 years. Although the emperor was around he had no power. The country was closed to foreigners from that time on. Up until about 1840 When U.S Commodore Matthew Perry steamed into Tokyo Harbor with three modern steam powered warships and sent a message to the Shogun. Basically Perry said he expected Japan to open up to foreign trade and the he would be back with double the number of ships in exactly one year. Basically that was the end of the Shogunate and she ruling samurai class. The Meiji emperor was restored to power and the Shogun and the samurai class were removed from power. What you in the "Last Samurai" is a fictionalized account of the last hold outs of the Shogunate/Samurai class. So here you see the beginning of that 300 year period of Japanese history and in the Last Samurai you see the end of it.

This is a great remake of Shogun from the one that came out in 1980, and I did see is as it was being air then. To me one is not better then the other, they are just telling the same story of events with there one take on things. Some are true actual events with fiction thrown into the mix. Because you guys are watching this remake first and not the one that came out in 1980, I can understand some confusion on your part of the history of it. Again both from the 1980 that came out and this remake are great to watch and have gave me some more filler information that did help with more of the story of events. I do recommend taking the time to see the one from the 1980 after you have finish watching this remake...

It's not really a remake, they are both adapted from a novel which was based on real history. The FX series is more authentic than even the novel, due to being produced with a team comprised of lots of people from the Japaness film industry. They're also currently working on writing and location scouting for two more seasons, to continue the story following actual history beyond what was portrayed in the novel.

Well now you know why the Spanish were in parts of South America and North America. The Japanese lords also converted to Catholicism for access to special loans, as usury to Christians was looked down upon but making money off of heathens was ok. The “Black ship” of the Portuguese is very important to the money Portugal made in its trading empire. The Age of Discovery is what you might remember being taught. Portugal having a school of navigation is part of this Age of Discovery. Your history isn’t just a long time ago, but we in America were only told from only one point of view, that this Age of Discovery was great! But not if you were not Christian or from Europe. From the indigenous people of America, Africa, India, China, Japan, and the Philippines not so much. Slavery, death, and Catholics overthrowing or destabilizing governments is what the Age brought.

It is historical but heavily dramatised . The characters are all based on real people (but their names have been changed). The events largely happened, but a lot of details either were not n known and therefore invented or have been changed to make things more dramatic. By the end, all of the characters fate are the same as their real life counterparts. Definitely do not read up on the history until after the show is finished.

This is pretty accurate historically, although events have been changed on the timeline (in real life Acheki Tama never met William Adams) and names have been changed. Most importantly my favourite character of the time - Date Masamune, also known as The One Eyed Dragon of Oshu - does not make an appearance in this story. Easily the most ferocious, complicated, and interesting character of the time. The Dragon was a lord, subordinate to the Taiko and to Tokugawa/Yoshii and eventually one of their most trusted (and feared) weapons, despite his habit of not turning up to their earlier battles until it was nearly too late - and then rocking up in funeral clothes and challenging both men to execute him. A habit that seemed to mostly amuse both of them. The One Eyed Dragon was also likely a secret christian and protected christians (including very likely his daughter) from the Tokugawa edict banning christianity in Japan. Its because of him that a bunch of people in Spain have the surname "Japon"; caused by him advising the christian samurai of one of his embassies to europe to stay there to avoid persecution. If you want an enjoyable but also very educational program on the history of the period, including the period in series 1 of Shogun, there is a dramatized documentary tv series on Netflix called, Age of the Samurai: Battle for Japan. Its not dry or boring at all. The Sengoku period fascinates me and I loved this dramatized history lesson.

Original Photo online of the REAL John Blackthorne! I saw it! It's awesome, just Google!! That's how REAL n accurate this show is! The main Japanese lead Character was Producer and he made sure this was the most accurate and Authentic Show EVER made! He was fed up with cultural mistakes and historical inaccuracies of movies like The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise etc! SHOGUN is legit, outfits, language, body. Movements, postures, rituals, tea ceremonies, buildings, they brought the BEST Japanese historians, cultural experts, costume designers, builders, artists from all over Japan onboard for months and months of pre production work to put together the most authentic Japanese Show ever made! They are quite rightly immensely proud of every aspect and tiny exquisite of their work! Even the hair styles! Actors willingly agreed to have their heads shaved and hair cut in authentic styles of the period. The female Japanese lead/interpreter spent months learning how to walk, talk, move, and even use/put/hold her hands in the authentic manners! She said it was the most difficult and intense work she had ever done! 😮 🙏

Loosely historical. Real people were used as basis for the characters in the story. There were a number of Christian Japanese lords but not as many and not as many of high ranking as in the show. Women in the show are more modern imaginings than would found at the time. There were female spies but not female ninjas. There were a few female samurai but not until several hundred years after the events in the show.
