Shading Space Marines is challenging - either your are doing panel lining work, or using a wash and cleanup method. With this video, you will find out what is the fastest way to shade and wash your space marines so you save so much time!
With the drop of Indomitus Box set, I am sure that many of you are looking forward to paint some space marine army - for that reason, I have came up with a comparison of different shading / washing methods so you can get your space marine army ready as soon as possible. Essentially, this shows ways to shade white armor on your space marines, so if you are interested in painting white armor (like White Scars Space Marines) it will help you a lot. After all, white armor is my speciality at this point, so it would be a shame if I did not tell you what is the fastest way to shade it.
One of the not so much talked about method is an oil wash. Oil wash will help you spread the shades very quickly and nicely. Honestly, it is a game changer if you do not know about oil wash yet. I assume, that many army painters already know about other methods, but I would recommend reasearching oil wash a little bit more, since it can save you so much time.
I am also using Agrax Earthshade. Since the Agrax Earthshade Gloss has less tension, it will very likely be faster when speedpainting your space marines. The same is true for nuln oil and nuln oil gloss washes.

It's worth noting that in the most basic example of washing over basecoat oil wash is simply faster. But if you use it over a more complicated paintjob (e.g. if you've painted two surfaces, color transitions and whatnot and then decided you wanted to give it a little more pop with blacklining in between) the ability to just remove it afterwards with a piece of cotton becomes invaluable
@RedauserArtcore
@RedauserArtcore 3 года назад
Hi, thanks for the video! I love your channel. A little misconception about oils is that you need a varnish before using them. There is absolutely no need to do that. Mineral spirit does not react with acrylic colours. The only instance where I see fitting to varnishing the mini, is when you just applied colours using an airbrush, and you don't leave it to dry for a few hours. When using the cotton swabs to clean off the oils it may scrap some colour off. Please note that also a paintbrush with a wash would remove the colour in this scenario. Cheers!
@Zumikito
@Zumikito 3 года назад
Hi, thank you! I have tested this hypothesis multiple times, and this somehow doesn't work for me- many times I applied enamel or oil wash over space marine in ulthuan grey baecoat and it ended up staining huge chunks of space around the applied area - this doesn't happen with varnish. While mineral spirit by itself doesn't have to react, the oil wash still gets to places that I don't want. So in my case, I have to varnish them (or I might be doing something wrong honestly)
@Ennio444
@Ennio444 2 года назад
Some people keep saying this, but my experience totally contradicts it. I always was very careful with the qtips because I at first I kept rubbing off parts of the acrylic basecoat below (sometimes also the rattlecan GW primer!!!) . When I started varnishing the minis, this stopped happening. I'm not saying the white spirits react with the acrylic, but what if people are using different white spirits? Trementine or other sorts of what essentially are solvents. I bought my white spirits bottle at an oil paint store, a Dutch brand, Talens. Maybe that's too strong for miniatures? There has to be a reason why your acryllics aren't rubbed off by the qtips, but mine are.

Oil paints are great but beware, while oil can bond on acrylic just fine it doesn't work the other way around. So whatever oil paint you put on your mini make sure it is the last layer otherwise you might get flaking. Also remember that drying times are longer for oil paints...much longer. Another good option for shading and recesses are acrylic inks. Artist grade inks can give more options for wash colors and they are cheaper and good if not better in quality of paint.

Mix a bit of Vallejo Airbrush Thinner in with your wash. 1:1 will make it act like an alcohol-based panel liner. You won't be able to clean up like an oil wash, but very little overspill happens anyways. That and you don't have to use harsh chemicals that would normally murder your nice sable brushes. Also, mixing oil paints with Winsor & Newton Sansodor will not destroy your models without a coat of varnish (unless you use a steel carding brush to apply it). I have literally never varnished my models before the oil paints and I have never had an issue. (This is with Vallejo primer too, so the paint is already basically falling off before the oil).

This confuses me. For a predominantly white/bright color scheme, maybe the methods used and concerns raised here are valid. However, there are several videos that just brush the washes over the entirety of the model without varnishing them, and the shading is similar or even more prominent. The base colors in those videos are darkened but only marginally, or they use "empty" brushes to soak up the excess on flat areas to keep the base closer to pre-washing. Note that I haven't painted since 2008 and am only now looking to start again. As such, this is merely an observation from viewing other content.
@Zumikito

If you will paint something like dark angels or crimson fists, you might get by without recess shading, but for lighter paints it is necessary to recess shade. Gloss varnish will help a little bit. There is no reason to make "mistake" or coffee stain if you use Nuln Oil *Gloss*. It rapidly goes in panel lines. Keep a second brush on standby, the tiny mistakes you make can be corrected immediately. I constantly panel line my Sisters and Marines, I found Nulm Oil gloss > all other methods including Tamiya Oil. The oil wash will run a lot since it is so low viscous, the Nuln oil gloss "sticks" and runs into the panels, but does not spill over like Tamiya.

Is oilwash "lesser" quality or is it just that you are used to using the other products? Having watched other painters use oilwash for panel lines they have significant less spill than you which translates into 1) cleaner lines (because if you don't need to clean it you don't rub it and the lines stay sharper as applied) 2) It ends up being even faster due to less clean up. This may have been because they were using brushes that give them better control where as you used a huge manky old one you did not care about. Also if agrax color is what people want vs brown or black oil paint you can simply mix the color. Finally you don't need to varnish (marconjm), if you do for the other products this is an additional time saver that is not touched on as the video assumes that this step is equal across the minis. Very interesting comparisons.

Might be because the oil paint had larger pigment particles, but this is not an issue with oil washes like pre mixed tamiya panel liner. You absolutely need to put varnish before the oil wash, if not, the oil paint spills across the surface due to it's properties and you will see that the paintjob is ruined. I have tested this with non varnished models putting tamiya panel liner over ulthuan grey, try that if you think otherwise. Of course, I would like to skip this step, but I have seen the result. If you mean that you don't need to varnish for regular washes, you are right! However it dors not take that much time if you do whole unit like this, but sure.

I have 2 points about the video: Could the increase in speed be due to you doing them one after another and you're more warmed up? Why not use white spirit and acrylic to fix the miniature post oils, since as you said, you saved all that time?
@Zumikito
@Zumikito 4 года назад
Great points, funnily enough I washed every miniature on a separate day , so I wouldn't say that the result is skewed that way. Also, I really tried to push myself with regular washes. When I am painting my army, this process usually takes me like 2-3 hours (regular agrax) per miniature, so here I tried my best. In regards to your second point, yes! That is an option. I actually said that in the video, if you want to fix some of the mistakes,you have an option to go back to the base paint and even out some of the spillover and save the q-tip method for the largest surfaces.
@Paddzr
@Paddzr 4 года назад
@@Zumikito I just wondered how long extra it would've taken if you did go back with acrylic to fix it up and compared it to the rest. It would've been much quicker as the q tip already removed most of the work. It's good video, I use plenty of oil based effects with thinned 10:1 white spirit to oil paint and add pigment while it's trying for quick dirty grim dark models and q tip clean up. Makes stuff like guard tanks super quick and helps with weathering to give the pigments extra grip in recesses.

You maybe aren’t using enough lahmian medium. When painting white it’s so much quicker and easier to fill over the non recessed areas with white.

I actually added too much I think - it lost it's intensity/contrast and it was difficult to control on the miniature. I might try flow improver next time though!

They are most certainly enamel based, not oil. While it will clean up with mineral spirits and better with enamel thinner, it works best to clean up with lighter fluid containing Naphtha -- Zippo brand, etc.

Very informative and great to see people experiment with different things, but there's one major thing you didn't address: how much doing the same thing over and over increases your speed :) By the time you worked with the oil you had already figured out the best way to apply the paint, how to avoid certain areas, how heavy to apply, etc.

A large part of your cleanup is from your brush. Bit too large for a pin wash and looks like you have paint in the ferrule.
@Luna832

Your oil wash was not really optimal. You can achive even more contrast with oils than normal acryllic wash. You just have to get the wash thickness rigth. Also you dont need any thinner to clean oil wash, you can just take a q-tip and rub the wash off, or if you are an animal like me you can do it with your finger wich is probably the fastest way.
@arnargunnarsson7542
@arnargunnarsson7542 3 года назад
White spirit and oil paints do not react chemically with acryllic paints, you can rub your paint job with white spirit without gloss varnish and your paint job will be fine
@Zumikito
@Zumikito 3 года назад
I invite you to apply ulthuan grey over primer and try to apply oil wash over that - it will simply run wild and ruin your layer, I have already tried this so you don't have to, but if you don't trust me, go ahead :)
@alcovitch
@alcovitch 3 года назад
While it's true the spirits will not react, the act of rubbing will easily pull off acrylic paint.

Oh boy, these white painted miniatures will turn piss yellow in a few years (maybe a decade when you are lucky), especially when people don't clean up the oil wash properly from the smooth/flat areas. Additionally, waiting for the oil paint to dry adds to the timer: oil washes take a much longer time to even start drying let alone fully curing compared to acrylics. Adding to this, the average oil paint thinner (white spirit/odorless turpentine) is toxic (low acute toxicity via inhalation/skin contact but possible irreversible CNS effects prolonged usage, see Lund et al.). I just downloaded AK Interactives White Spirit SDS and you really don't want this stuff on your skin or huff the vapors for a prolonged time. Don't get me wrong, I can see where oil wash has its benefits but for your average painter this is a lot of work with (possible) health implications. I would still suggest the average hobbyist to stick to water based acrylics.

Hey Zumi: this isn't really a criticism, but I have a generalized request. Please us American English notation in your numbers. I don't know why European numbers use such confusing style, but it's impossible to follow for people who aren't versed in international communication. For example, in the British style, time is displayed like PM 7.30 or worse 19.30. Every clock in the world uses a colon : to specify time, so I can't imagine why they don't. In this video, you use the non-British Euro version of 7,9 as a decimal. Also, not sure why, but a period is used in scientific notation, AP and MLA, and so on. I encourage you to switch to the "four point five" 4.5 style.
