At this time I have reason to believe that Broken Anvil the company might not be able to fulfill their promises to their consumers. I would be wary of investing into their products until they prove to the community that they can keep their commitments.

This technique is amazing. I've had a discussion with my friend who's also learning how to paint historical figures properly and we came to the conclusion that you could, in theory, do the bare minimum work by shading the figure with an airbrush and then outline all the small details with this method and end up with a fairly presentable result.

First of all - yay infinity models! Second - One tool that i found is quite helpful with recess shading is gunpla markers (they have one with a TINY tip for armor lining). You get the same effect but without fear of putting paint around the model. Yeah, you can't do advance tech with it but if you need a lot of armor panels lined quickly - that's a great tool.
@Sammo212
@Sammo212 2 года назад
don't those markers, much like the black line ink, require the model to be gloss varnished first?
@b_Lynx
@b_Lynx 2 года назад
@@Sammo212 that's a good question that i don't have an answer to :) I've tried them on my unvarnished models and they do work. Although some colors required multiple passes to be fully covered. Just don't push marker to hard. The tip is so tiny that it goes through the paint layers and when you pull it is starts removing paint.
@AdamSamson1991
@AdamSamson1991 2 года назад
@Bearded Lynx And it doesn't necessarily have to be gunpla-branded markers - if you go to an art store or hobby story, you might just find fine-tipped ink markers that do the same job. For precision, I'm talking about the 0.5 mm tips or finer.

The gunpla liners (glass bottle with a paint brush in the topper; enamel) also work extremely well and can go a little bit deeper than the markers.

@SO-ym3zs
@SO-ym3zs 2 года назад
I was thinking the same thing. This is a common practice in armor modeling to make details pop through heightened contrast. And I remember figuring out to do this on minis way back when. What's old is new again. Maybe dry brushing models will become cool again some day 😁 And oils and enamels are definitely worth learning to use for shading recesses.

Reaper created liner paints specifically for this purpose over 25 years ago. But then miniature painters decided it was too basic a technique and shit all over it until the next generation of miniature painters “discovered” this technique again.
@maverickman6486
@maverickman6486 2 года назад
I remember starting painting in 95 and reading a magazine article about blacklining. After a while I started using darker colors or other paints watered down to "blackline" with color. Then I noticed with thinned paints that multiple varied thin layers of "blacklining" could create an effect that is called today layering. Painting is really a discovery of different tricks.

Recess shading or blacklining with oils is something you should've covered. The way oils thinned with mineral spirit/white spirit just explodes and goes into the recesses is pure magic. Turns a 15-20 min process with acrylics a 90 second process with thinned oils.
@Jason-gq8fo
@Jason-gq8fo 2 года назад
Enamel washes are good too especially if you like grim dark style. I just cover the whole model then clean off the wash where I don’t want it with white spirits and cotton buds
@RachitModi
@RachitModi 2 года назад
@@Jason-gq8fo that's for washing. If you place the enamel or oil exactly where you want the lining (in other words, pin washing) that's unbelievablely efficient for blacklining/recess shading as compared to acrylics in my opinion.

i use oil washes for my recess painting and the capillarity + the fact that i know i can erase or soften anything i put in the model makes the process super enjoyable and easy, the only downside is the odorless mineral spirit because i don't want to open my window on winter but luckily winter is finishing here on the southern hemisphere. Definetly a big recommend for those that want to dabble with oil paints and want to start simple.

I tend to use a old synthetic brush with a very prominent hook on it for any sort of armour panel lines, not necessarily all recesses though. I find the hooked tip just locks into the crack if you do it from right angle and speeds up the process a whole lot! inks + with acrylic is my go to!

I just started watching this video, so I don't know if it's mentioned or not, but this is something I did naturally, coming from Gundam models before I got into miniatures. Panel-lining in the Gundam model community is a universally used technique, which is basically recess shading, but for miniature models of giant robots. There are so many cool techniques that can be learned from different styles of hobbies/crafting, and I would love to see more cross over between the communities. I've seen some awesome videos from Millennial Model Mayhem, but I think there is still much more to be explored!

A point on practice: One of the hardest lessons for me to learn was that not every mini needs to be a masterpiece and it's perfectly fine to completely screw up a paint job. The first time you try anything, you're probably going to suck at it... but when you're trying something new, the experience you get and the lessons you learn from that practice are way more valuable than that one specific mini. When you start to 'get good' you also start to play it safe, you stop trying new things because you know what works to produce a decent final result... but that's when you stop improving and growing as a painter. Basically, give yourself permission to suck, because every bad paint job teaches you ways to make the next one better.

I feel the same when I recess shade a mini as when I ink a drawing. It's risky dingoes because mistakes are so visible, and I always feel like I'm cheating a little putting on contour lines because I have been dissuaded from using contour lines in certain kinds of art, being told it's a sign of you not being good enough at forming volumes with your chosen medium and then contour lines can be used as a crutch. The thing is with almost all minis and a lot of other artwork, contour lines and recess shading is absolutely the style and something we WANT. And you're right the feeling when we do it and it goes well is so good and satisfying, even for me as a newbie painter. It just tightens everything right up, it's sæxæ.

You can also use masking to cover parts of a model you really don't want to make mistakes on. Laying down a line of masking tape can let you really get a crispy solid line when framing and recess shading without fear of making that mistake to the incredible blend you are worried about.
