Performed at St Michael's Church, Ghent, Belgium
'Shadow cast by the sun' is the second movement from 'Rhythm of Light', a suite of four movements celebrating the life and work of sculptor Barbara Hepworth. The titles are based on two of the sculptor’s quotations which discuss her influences and artistic approaches, and the suite title is inspired by her many mentions of both rhythm and light. Within the music there are also references to her wide scope of interests such as form, texture and dance.
'Shadow cast by the sun' is reflective of the sculptor creating on her own but not alone, much like the process of writing music, and a sense of poignant and focused isolation before sharing the work with others.
