They are clearly getting a backhander from the guy running the pub. "We were stuck in the pub for 90mins and had to order drinks. It worked perfectly after we left" 😂
Maybe Drax was the Landlord, and he was using a secret app jamming device to slow the game down. "A entire drinking establishment in the centre of London" "And no one knows it's up here"
As someone who lives in the US and won't ever have the chance to play, I would be interested in a "spoiler" version of this video if you get the chance. Sorry it didn't work well for you. Thanks for the video as always!
I wonder if he's a professional actor/acting student and the hotel job is his regular means of earning a living. I've encountered actors playing parts in these kind of things and man do they commit to it! You think, hey it's just a minimum wage thing for tourists, but to an actor every role is getting to do what they love (plus you never know when you're going to get talent spotted).
@@DavidJarvis01 Given they were absent from official Bond films for over 40 years, I can see them wanting to get use out of them! There also quite useful as a 'apolitical' organisation.
"Congratulations, Mr Dyson, this was just another tes... My god, what happened?!" "Nothing! The gun you gave me was fake. I had to find another way to kill the dog!"
that’s a shame! worked well for us when we did it. The only thing I noticed is as we chose a later in the day game, some locations were cut out of the journey as they were past opening hours. I saw on insta we missed the florist location.
This video pairs really well with a recent essay by Jenny Nicholson about the failed Star Wars Hotel. It seems like many of these immersive games are relying on apps and tech that, when they fail, do not seem to have backup systems. The company offering this really should have a help hotline for when it seems like the gameplay is broken. I'm sorry that your experience was negatively impacted.
Calvin, I've seen the future. Hope fully someone will produce a VR head set for PS5 VR or META QUEST and create a James Bond VR game for us all to experience in person and be a real spy. Better than what you just experienced. Come on EON, you know its needs to be done :)
I do find it noticeable that both this and '007 Cypher' use Spectre as the villains. I wouldn't be surprised when Bond 26 eventually turns up Spectre are part of the reboot if not necessarily Blofeld [although he seems primed for an 'end credit scene'!].
I just really struggle to get excited about a 'reboot' and a 'different timeline' (a cheap storytelling device guaranteed to remove any tension if ever I saw one). Apart from the fact they completely messed up Spectre and Blofeld in the Craig films, the end of NTTD has fundamentally changed Bond forever, and not in a good way.
@@usernameinfo4therevengeEach to there own but It doesn't bother me as Bond has already done a successful hard reboot with Casino Royale [which disregarded the 20 previous films] and it could be argued that 'Goldeneye' was a soft reboot [given the mostly new cast& crew and downplaying references]. By this point many franchises have done multiple time lines/continuities [to the extent 'Spiderman: No Way Home' crossed over the 3 time lines of that series]. I think it's almost certain if Craig's stint ended differently, the next Bond would still have been a hard reboot.
@@usernameinfo4therevenge "NTTD has fundamentally changed Bond forever, and not in a good way". Its irrelevant since a reboot means the events don't run into one another, which is why James Bond rather than just 007 can come back.
Recently did this as a birthday surprise and we arrived as early as possible to enjoy our day trip to London. We spent over TWO hours emailing customer support as we couldn't even start the game as we had Irish phone numbers that the game didn't support. I can't belive a company running a game like this with so much that could go wrong has no customer support phone number. We eventually had to buy a new UK SIM card to even sign up to the game despite the website saying international numbers could play. We missed our dinner reservations rushing through the game which I would've enjoyed so much more if I could take my time to take in the atmosphere. The puzzles were fine but really the hardest part are the riddles as directions which was fun at the start but quickly became frustrating when its all the game has apart from some of the props. My advice instead of doing this game is to dress in a suit, go to a hotel bar and order a cocktail. You'll feel much more like Bond and less like someone who got ripped off.
Oh my god I did this only a couple of months ago. It certainly gets your steps in but my mate and I had a fun time solving it! Even though it rained(!)
IDK if it was the same company but I did a similar event a couple years back and it was fun so hopefully this comes to the US sometime in the future. Sucks that your experience was hampered by technical issues but it's good to hear that was the only issue as opposed to the event being poorly planned or underwhelming.
It's been confirmed 'Road to a Million' is getting a second run. Even if it's only tenuously liked to Bond [with Eon's involvement minimal] it does make sense from a 'brand' perspective to keep it going given, even if they wanted to do it, there isn't a current continuity to do a scripted streaming spin off series from [with Craig's now over and the 'classic' run being dormant for 20+ years with Brosnan not interest in doing a legacy series] although I'd love to see another documentary like 'Sound of 007', maybe one on 'Bond villains'?
@@davidjames579 He said a few years ago he wasn't interested as 'my time was my time'. He's also endorsed both Cillian Murphy and Aaron Taylor-Johnson for the part recently.
@@jamesatkinsonja Oh fair enough. As much as I love the idea of a Pierce Old Bond film or series, as he's still got gravitas (as older Connery did) I never believed they'd make it. And given his exit from the role, I didn't think he'd want to. But even based on that, it would be nice to have something to make up for that. I guess The November Man will do.
@@davidjames579 Interestingly, Pierce is currently filming a new spy movie, Stephen Soderberg's 'Black Bag' [with features Naomi Harris] although not sure if he's a main character as details on the film are currently thin.
Some facts I pulled off the wiki about elektra king so In the novelisation, Elektra does not die immediately after she's shot by Bond. Instead, as she lies dying on the bed, she begins to sing a lullaby. The film's original ending had Elektra survive her gunshot wound and was recovering in hospital, where she was visited by Bond. The ending was changed because it was considered too downbeat.
Since you watched North Sea Hijack and Wild Geese, I'd also recommend The Sea Wolves from 1980, such a fantastic film great cast; Gregory Peck, Roger Moore and David Niven.
It would interesting and cool they ever made a James Bond style escape room, make you feel like James Bond, trying to find clues and escape the villains dastardly death trap
There is a new book of Ian Fleming published named ON HIS MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE. Could this also be the new Bond movie title? I think the new movie title for the next bond era is a very important decision especially for a reboot. The name Casino Royale was a smart move in 2005.
I doubt it given the novels and films are owned by different people [and the novel was to tie in with the 2023 coronation]. Eon had just got the rights back to 'Casino' in the early 2000's [when MGM swapped Spiderman with Sony] so it was more 'good timing' when they were looking to reboot.
The BBC article on Lana Del Ray potential Bond theme ['24'] not getting picked for 'Spectre' [something long suspected by fans] was so thin [especially as it related to a film released 9 years ago] they padded it out with a list of other rejected Bond themes [including some like 'No good about goodbye' which have been confirmed as never in the running]. Still, made a change from tired 'actor/actress who just happens to have a project to plug is going to be the next Bond/bond girl ' nonsense.
@@davidjames579 I certainly can believe it came out of QoS composing sessions and he polished it off for the Bassey album soon after. Given we don't know much about the Amy Winehouse song, I could believe Arnold had it out of ideas for her song before she and her team did a polish on it [which sadly never happened]. I'd be surprised if Bassey would have sung it if it was used for the film instead of someone more contemporary though for commercial reasons.
@@jamesatkinsonja I was under the impression that EON wanted to do one more song with Bassey. Maybe to make up for Moonraker's lackluster legacy, while they still can. I know they asked Paul McCartney back, to do Skyfall. He said they should use a new talent, and his suggestion was Adele, who he'd just heard.
@@davidjames579 Skyfall as the anniversary film would have been the ideal opportunity to have a 'legacy' artist return but while a nice idea, I think McCartney was right to direct them to a big contemporary artist like Adele.
So is something like 'Pokémon Go' so much more exciting than what you experienced here Calvin?? It does sound like a missed opportunity to have the public have fun with. It goes to show though doesn't it that this type of Mobile gaming is becoming more and more common in the mobile world for everyone to take part in, so its sad that it didn't reach it full potential. Maybe next time huh or maybe when Bond 26 comes out :) 3:56 nice jacket by the way Calvin, all the best
In a way the concept of the game is not that modern. When I was young my family took part in 'Car Treasure Hunts' where you'd drive around a designated area, from clues on a quiz sheet, and at each location there would be a thing stick to a lamppost or in someone's window. This is just someone sending texts for this, but is dependent on the system working properly and someone actually typing responses on time. In a weird way, the 'analog' version worked more efficiently because it didn''t require people and tech to run the game.
Have to say I'd never heard of this. Sorry to hear it went pear-shaped for you. If your experiences are just an outlier then I might see if my friends are interested cause it looks like a fun thing to do on a summer Saturday.
@@davidjames579 There were only two books available with about five to six groups stacked up waiting for them. So you lost the challenge of finding the book, had to sit around for 20+ minutes waiting for one to come free and then, for expediency, ended up sitting with a second group to go through the clues rather than do it yourself. Was the one negative out of what was a great event
Does it take you past the British Airways London HQ, or to buy a packet of Marlboro Red for a bit of severe product placement? Then off to Trafalgar Square for the ultimate in double-taking pigeon action?
Sorry to know you & your partner, had such a disappointing experience with this. how you were explaining it. it sounded like you both had a bad time behind the scenes filming the next series of 007: Road to a Million lol. also as you were all waiting for the next objective to start. actor Luke Evans or Russell Tovey should have made a special guest appearance as agents to interact with you & the rest of the participates. even Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan could have popped in the pub to say hello to everybody & announce the next mission. something to make it exciting. really good & interesting new video overall, Calvin. I'm looking forward to your next video. :)
can this be played in Austraila too? i know we don't have a Bond location but did you know that James Bond has a sister? Jane Bunn. don't ask me She's a Meteoreologist.
As I'm not that technologically savvy, nor do I live in a city, I've no idea if these sorts of games are common but this sounds really cool and different. It's such a shame about the technology problems [I really feel for you and particularly the people who had to abandon it] but thanks for the entertaining video.
Essentially its a live chat call centre situation, so maybe they got swamped with players that day, and/or staff phoning in sick. Hope it wasn't just one person, running everyone's game, and potentially losing track of each team's progress. "Well done, you completed the mission!" "But I'm still sat in the first pub".
Hey Calvin, ever think of reviewing the BBC radio dramas of the Ian Fleming novels? Toby Stephens (Gustav Graves) plays James Bond and there are some other famous cast members too (Ian McKellen plays Goldfinger for example). They're really well made and it's cool to hear Stephens' take on the character.
It sounds good. Sorry you had issues on the day. You always close with "Bond fans, so long for now". At this stage I think we're just fans, as there is no Bond 😢 As Barbara is 64 next month, I really hope she celebrates with news about the next Bond 🤞🏻
I am curious if you, or any of the viewers and fellow Bond super fans or those of us who just got into the books, have the Penguin trio edition of FRWL DN Goldfinger (2002) with the introduction by Christopher Hitchens? I seriously need that foreword but can't for the life of me find it anywhere online, only his other essays on Bond and Fleming. And the book isn't really readily available anymore, ie good condition or acceptable price
Really? With M? I do think it is a joke. Jokes aside, I do understand the problem with game and its application. Some change in structure would be awesome, to avoid waitlists and other difficulties
@@bouncingbluesoul5270 IO hired a 'mission's director' for the game in April this year so it's clearly a going concern but one that's still a while from materialising.
I said to a friend on the opening weekend for NTTD that I wouldn't expect the next Bond until 2025 at the earliest [as they were probably burnt out after the last two productions have been pretty troubled and they needed to have some distance from Craig's series before re-launching] so I always thought we were in for a long haul. It's not helping maters that were getting constant 'stories' about the film hiring actors etc so people think it's in production when it isn't [like the 'Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been offered the role' story which was clearly nonsense] and even if they wanted to get going, the 2023 strikes would have prevent it. It will happen eventually [even if Eon isn't doing it, someone else will]
