I'm still not really sure about that. Remaking a game doesn't involve game design, you "just" copy something and make it look better / run smother / improve some things, etc. Making a new game from 0 is way more more complicated than that, it requires a lot more work, testing and resources. I think it's been proved they are good on the technical side of making games, but you know, games aren't just good graphics.
But you can be sure, that even in a team of technicians there are some people with (good) ideas. And even when you just copy things you have to get a feeling on what to change and what to leave.
Yeah, it's entirely possible, although I'm not sure if they haven't changed much in SOTC. Anyway, I think it would be difficult for them to create their own game. I mean they have been making remasters and remakes for a long time, and for a good reason (guaranteed sales and you don't have to worry much about about game design or creating new things). There will be always games to remake/remaster, and everyone knows they're good at that. So yeah, it could happen, but I can understand why they wouldn't do it.
You don't know my channel xD ... And propably don't understand German... But you're right. I love the reviews on this channel. Compact, critical and always plausible.
This game isn't for everyone but in saying that this game is incredibe. I played it back in 05 & the story has stuck with me since then & i look forward to going back to this game. Highly recommend getting it if you have never played it before.
i am very disappointed. this game gets these great reviews but they dont speak how garbage the control system is. climbing is the worse ive ever seen and the camera is annoying. idk but the first beast and i cant get above his leg. im actually pissed how they couldnt make the mechanic's any better than this. if anybody is wondering whether to buy.....dont, its terrible. yeah the visuals may be cool and i could careless about the music but gameplay sucks ass at this point.
The mechanics aren't great but they aren't hard to use either... I've never heard of someone who literally can't climb up the first Colossi's leg... you might be the problem.
Note! Digital foundry found that the game does in fact run at 60fps on pro nearly 100% of the time, and apparently they only found it dipped at the stairs of the central temple
@Jack White, If you would think before trying to be defensive and patronizing, you'd realize that 1440p/HDR is also better looking on 1080p screens and that 1080p also mean it "supports 4k setups". So at the end of the day, that specific phrasing misleading. Therefore, it should be pointed out.
@jack would you be okay with a game saying it supports 1080p televisions when the actual game plays in 720p? it's completely irrelevant that 1440p looks better on a 4K screen, it's still not a "4K setup". and by the way, supersampling AA does look better, how about you learn tech then come back
4K setup support means that the game will display in a 4K setup, just simple as that, in order to indicate that the game is in 4K it will say "4K output", in the case of upscaled it says in the box "4K upscaled"
Just FYI, you can use 1080p and HDR together, since it was implied otherwise (though probably not intentional and more so pointing out the two extremes).
One small thing I've always appreciated about Team Ico games is that they either have very little or no HUD at all, I haven't seen many other 3rd person games with that bare of an interface. It makes their games feel more cinematic and pulls you into the game world effectively.
Except for Last Guardian and its "tips" clogging up the screen every 5 minutes with no option to turn them off. That was honestly my only major gripe with that game as it pulled me out of the experience several times..
I totally agree with you. In Horizon Zero Dawn you can turn off literally all HUD elements and it looks spectacular. Some of them can be set to "dynamic" setting which means that they will show up by slightly touching the touchpad on Dualshock 4 which is really convenient. Probably the best HUD implementation I have ever seen.
Wow forgot this was coming so soon. Damn this looks gorgeous. At the risk of sounding cliche, this was one of the few classics I felt I played before it was "cool" or legendary. I got it in 2005 because I really loved Godzilla & giant monsters and shit, and the game got a favorable 8.7 on gamespot so I gave it a shot. After playing it I brought it to every gamer friend's house I could... challenging them to see if they could solve the first few bosses together while I snickered in the corner. After I reached the unforgettable, powerful ending, I realized I must've randomly chosen to pick up one of the greatest games ever made. But it's the kinda game that nobody around campus ever really talked about (much less bought) amidst other current hits like RE4 and WoW. Thankfully as time passed and having beaten the game multiple times I realized I was far from alone in loving SotC and digging into all its mystique and lore theory. While it continues to sit in my top 10 favorite games, I just hope that all the "hype" since it's initial release hasn't set newcomers' expectations too high. At least for me, there was nothing quite like picking up a monster flick and coming away with the strongest of feels.
I'm avoiding watching the video to leave some room for surprise, but Jesus. That music! This has got to be one of the best soundtracks of the medium, even nearly 13 years later.
I've been waiting for this PS4 Remake launch (few more days) with the feeling like I'm going to experience a pillar of gaming I never got to before. I never played this on PS2 or PS3. I got the Special Edition preordered (that Steelbook tho 😉) and I can't wait to finally go across the world of Shadow of the Colossus. 😁
Glad to see new people discovering this gem. I'm in the minority but I still prefer ICO to SotC - that game made me truly realize the expressive potential and the power of game design at the time.
take your alone time with this game and discover your feelings, also during the moments when you're just searching the land. oh yes and: crank that sound system up!
The expression you are looking for is "something cannot be overstated" when you want to say that it is good. 1:47 It means that the good aspect in question bares repeating, because something being overstated is bad, so saying that it cannot be overstated means it is good. Something being understated is a positive thing, as it suggests that it should be stated more than it is. Claiming that something "cannot be understated" does not quite mean what you want it to mean.
I just commented the same thing cuz I didn't see anyone else pointing it out. It is crazy how often people misuse that statement. Almost as often as "I could care less"...
I know, I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, but watching videos recently I've noticed writing mistakes like these increasingly often by people who really shouldn't be making these mistakes.
Their last E3 wasn't as crazy most years but people *really* shouldn't slouch on the stuff they showed off. Honestly, they've been booked for games every month for some time now.
last year playstation was good this year is good its always. Nintendo this last year was very good, this year they some surprises. Why you hate on a company that you game dont even play ? 70 for cardboard and the games INCLUDED. Stop memeing.
I was watching the original GT review of Shadow of the Colossus from 2005 that I have on my CD for some nostalgia, then I came here and I was blown away by the sudden change in the graphical quality and cleanness of this game. It's incredible, and this is just two generations after. I wonder how different it will look another two generations after.
Great review, Damiani! I appreciate that you analyzed this from the perspective of someone who has played the previous iteration--it's an important aspect that many reviewers gloss over on remasters.
Honestly I wouldn't recommend new players to watch this review. Yes, the script is solid, but to me, SOTC's magic was also how every encounter was also a puzzle, trying to get the colossus to notice me and finding a way to climb it. I felt like this video spoiled a bunch in this regard, so I dunno, if anyone is reading this, maybe just give it a listen ?
I'm watching ChristopherOdd's Blind playthrough of this and it's so exciting to see people be able to experience this game for the first time with this beautiful remake. I know some people hate that another version of this game is coming out again when they've already bought it once or even twice before, but there are so many new players who will get to play this game that never played the original or the PS3 remaster. It's so worth it.
"The technical and aesthetic achievement of this remake cannot be understated"...I assume you meant it can't be OVERstate? It is odd how many times that seems to be used incorrectly. Otherwise, good review Allies.
Once again, Great review guys! might sound strange or stupid, but i cant wait to purchase this game for a 4th time! even on a 720p Monitor this game looks fantastic!
This looks like a really good remake, but I'm not as big a fan of the more realistic visuals. I always liked the original for looking like a painting, and this doesn't really do that. Some of the framing of the bosses doesn't look as good either, particularly Pelagia. He just didn't look as big and imposing. But I guess maybe I'm just one of those "purists." A lot of what I like about the game after going back so many times are the little details that bring the whole experience together. This seems to have missed quite a few of them as I feared it might. But I'm happy that the bulk of it seems to be intact.
We didn't get more colossi, we didn't get an expansion of the map, we didn't get full access to the very top of the castle, & yes the other-worldly look of the original is no longer present. But the PS4 remake just looks so gorgeous even 6 years after it's release. It's really hard to complain about it. Hopefully we get a Definitive Edition in 2025 to celebrate the 20th anniversary with some of those extras finally included. I do agree that Pelagia looked bigger & more imposing in the original.
I mentioned this on the Digital Foundry-Analysis for SotC, but the gold-standard for remakes is in my opinion still the Resident Evil Remake for the GameCube. Not only did it vastly improve the visuals, it also added new gameplay-mechanics AND new Areas into the game; this is what a remake should do. As much as I love SotC and this breathtaking visual upgrade, for me it´s more of a remaster than a remake. A Remake should bring more to the table than just a visual upgrade; even if it´s such a major one. The mirrored world is a nice feature of course, and the new item is appreciated, but it´s still the same game it was all these years ago on the PS2.
I seriously can not wait to play this again haven't play it since the PS3 remaster and see these stunning visuals for myself in person its in my top ten games of all time !
Can you still launch to the head of #3 from his sword? Momentum tricks were always one of my favorite parts of the original. I hope that stuff is still possible.
I'm really excited to know what your reward will be when you find all the gold coins. Since there is no trophy for doing it, that could mean it's something very, very special. lol
I genuinely hope that 1. This ends up selling well and opening this masterpiece of a game to a whole new generation that missed out and 2. Bluepoint is given the chance to remake whatever game they want to this graphical fidelity. I would lose my mind if Konami contracted them to remake the metal gear solid games with the fox engine since they had them make that amazing HD collection years back
If we're really lucky that wait will only be a year away. The PS4 remake was awesome & still looks good 6 years later. Like many though, I was disappointed we didn't get at least some of the cut colossi put back in the game. As well as an expansion of the map & full access to the very top of the castle. The 20th anniversary will be here in 2025 & considering the fan base this game continues to have, there's a chance a "Director's Cut" is in the works to celebrate. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
Great review for a great game. Amazing how this game is so good that with a fresh coat of paint it just gets better, even being 10 years old. Not many 10 year old games can say that.
I wonder if this studio is capable of making other big time remakes, or even stand alone AAA quality games. I would like to see something like a Prince of Persia Warrior Within Remake or Drakan Order of the Flame Remake- that would be so cool. But realistically - I think BP should try their hand at producing a full fledged game next time around. I am still not entirely sure they are capable of it. We will have to see.
The controls were so frustrating in the PS3 HD version I almost shattered my controller in anger. I am glad to hear they improved them in this but I am still very hesitant to spend the money and give it a chance because of that experience.
I agree, it's still hard for me to get excited for remake of a game I know I can crush. They don't have to add them to the story, just make it for an extra challenge for us long time fans.
Ueda's vision was actually 48 colossi, was down to 24 and now 16. The unfinished map for 17th colossus was included on ps2 disc but its not accessible unless you hack the game , but due to PS2's limitation and schedule, they scrapped it and made it 16 colossi officially 48 colossi was his original vision. Ueda wasnt involve in this remake so not surprise if theres nothing new.
Oh wow, I loved your work on GT and I'm so glad to hear you're back! I found this channel totally by accident but so glad I did. I'll certainly be supporting your channel and looking forward to your upcoming videos.
Haha right? That's the one thing about the remake that sticks out to me too. Everything else about it looks greater than I expected but that face.. man.
The "bin this" button would be great if we could actually trust game platforms to actually be transparent with their data, the problem is the button would most likely be useless since the decision of what game to be binned would be entirely up to what they decided it to be and they could pretend that it's the most popular game to be binned.
Bluepoint Games upgraded themselves from "The Masters of Remasters" to "The Masters of Remakes". While I can't play the game on launch, I will be sure to buy it on launch day, because Bluepoint deserves my support.
Alex Olinkiewicz I wouldn’t say they are a master of remakes because this isn’t a remake. And they even acknowledge that. If you want to put it on scales of remakes this is shit. This is just a really good remaster. Remakes dynamically change the entire game. Like the Twin Snakes does to the original Metal Gear Solid, Black Mesa to Half Life etc
Well that's your opinion, but no this is a remake, not a remaster, and it is one of the best Remakes out there. "Remakes dynamically change the entire game" yeah that is what they did to this game, yes the story, pacing, etc is exactly the same as the original, but having to recreate almost the entire game from the ground up entitles it to be called a Remake not a Remaster.
Alex Olinkiewicz again, this is not a remake, this is a remaster. This is the equivalent to tracing over a drawing. Not a remake. It’s a fine remaster, but not at all a remake.
Your free to disagree, but no this is a Remake, not a Remastered. a remastered is taking the entire game and and making it be able to run on new systems with added improvements. A Remake is when you recreate almost the entire game from scratch. Yes this game is pretty much the same as the original, but that is whats know as a Shot-for-Shot Remake which is what this game is.
People like you are why the industry has gone to shit. Use to be this was a remaster, then they got cheap with it. Now they bring the quality back up, suddenly it’s a remake. Lol. No it’s still the exact same game from ten years ago. Not a remake when they literally copy EVERYTHING from the original design to animations. Sorry, it’s a remaster
I'm a little worried that this game has garnered too much praise and that a bunch of people are going to play the remake with too high of expectations. Part of what made it such an amazing experience is how little was known about it and how unique it was at the time. I mean I feel like some of that still holds true but still.
Wonderful review. I don't agree with this setting the standard for remakes though, not by the looks at it anyway. It may possibly be on par, but I think REmake already set a standard, one that I just can't see that this has gone above.
I hope this gives Bluepoint the push it needs to make their own original game. These guys are very talented, and now they need to show their creativity.
Dark Mountain Productions those efforts usually end in shit. How do you think we got The Order 1886? Prestigious porting dev got its own title and they pumped out a 4 hour meh fest. They don’t excel because they are creative, they excel because they are good at finding improvements in other people’s creativity.
Really? Because Daxter, God of War Chains of Olympus, God of War Ghost of Sparta, and Lone Echo were all really good. Also, don't forget that Sly 4 was made by a remaster studio, and they ended up making the best one in the series, in my opinion.
Dark Mountain Productions Those titles you listed were portable games the AAA devs couldn’t be bothered with, when they stepped up to the actual big time, they failed. As for soy 4 I wouldn’t know, never played the series sadly
Brian Woo It depends on how you usually value games. It's not going to keep you busy finding new things to do for 100 hours, but I think the experience, while relatively short compared to most games today, is worth the price whether you've played the original or not. The best way to know you'll like this game is if you generally enjoy slower paced games like Journey. There's definitely some heart-pounding moments of combat in Shadow of the Colossus, but they are all really spaced out by long treks across the world.
Absolutely worth the money. Is pretty short, probably get through it in around 10 hours on a first playthrough, but very memorable and unique experience.
100% Theirs a reason why it's highly praised and still getting 5 star scores.. it's because it's really good. Doesn't the praise and great scores kind of answer your question? It's one of a kind, highly recommend it. I guess if you were really that worried about it theirs always red box.. but i personally think this is a game that deserves peoples money. I'll buy it just to thank Sony and Bluepoint for bringing it to a new generation, plus it seems like they have done an incredible job.
If you havent play the game, its not short, trus me, dont use guides when playing this game. The reason why its now short becuase most of us already know where to find the colossi and how to climb it, for first timers, its mostly a 12-15hr game AGAIN DONT USE GUIDES And if you havent play the game yet. I ENVY YOU! If I can take off this games memory off my head so i can play it again for the first time I WOULD!
