My love of this game knows no limit... the soundtrack by Marshall Parker is so perfectly fitting. I remember reaching out to him several years ago to personally thank him. Super nice guy! Thanks for covering this absolute gem.
I am so glad that you decided to cover this game. It went criminally unnoticed at its release. I was going to suggest it as your next RPG to cover, but you beat me to it. Something minds something something. 😂
Holy cow, I was not expecting this! Glad to see this game get some more attention - this game's take on the Shadowrun setting served as the basis for the modern Shadowrun: Returns, Dragonfall, and Hong Kong trilogy of games, and Hong Kong was my favorite Shadowrun game of all time. Shadowrun SNES isn't the *most* faithful Shadowrun game in terms of mechanics, but in terms of atmosphere and storytelling, it was absolutely the best of its time, and I'm stoked that you're showing this off.
I played Shadowrun Returns back in 2013 and had a great time with it. The whole series is so underrated, and there's so much depth here. You're a legend, UCBVG! You've earned MY Karma Points!!
Karma, I started playing this game again when you showed off the infinite money glitch a year ago. You should stream this one! Especially because you now know how to beat it now lol. I saw you stream Shadowrun returns, but I don't think I've seen you play the original.
I remember reading about this game in Nintendo Power and wanted to play it so bad but never saw it anywhere until years later I found a used copy. I wasn't disappointed.
Shadowrun... such a criminally underrated game. I am glad that HBS did the Shadowrun Returns, Dragonfall and Hong Kong Games. These are games I still play now and then.. especially UGCs.
Awe man, I had to stop the video at 3:30 because I’m actually reading said book you’re talking about (just in case of spoilers😅). Will check back in a couple of weeks.
When ghoul hunting, especially in the graveyard, you're best served by putting a headstone between you and them, that way you can shoot them, but they can't reach you. Also, RE Negotiation, it will lower the price the King asks for you to leave the caryards, by maxing your Charisma and Negotiation skills you can get out for 2,000 Nuyen, although it's still a better deal to kill him in the arena.
3:40:35 This reminds me the Cyberpunk 2077 "Don't fear the reaper" secret mission, Of course Shadow run being first I can't help myself to see why Shadowrun is so beloved, It was wat ahead of its time
I had once called the Nintendo Hotline for this game back in the day. I asked them where to find the Zip Gun and the guy told me it was a typo in the manual! His notes had absolutely no information on it: where to find it, how to get it, what it does, nothing! That call was $1.99/minute!!
Pretty sure if u keep kitsune alive throughout the whole game. She makes it to the chopper. Also u can give armour to runners like steelflight make them survive better
I believe the name Armitage is a homage to a character in the book Neuromancer by William Gibson. The book invented the cyberpunk genre and coined many terms such as "matrix". If you like this kind of culture you con't go wrong with this book.
Never understood why this game is called the spiritual successor to Nightshade. In 1992, Nightshade was great. I dunno much about this game, but it it looks so different.
I am proud to say i bested this game although it has as UCBVG pointed out several flaws if you are not playing carefully - that matchbox trick was awsome back in the day - and i never knew about that duplicate trick ... though i never needed it :-) fun fact: this SNES Shadowrun doesnt stick close to the real P&P franchise simply because: a cyber enhanced "street samurai" aka street sam like Armitage can never be a shaman for DOG as in this game... it's because you will loose your ability to connect to magie with cybernetics... also this game has no mega corporate as antagonist... jester spirit? Dragon? OK Dragons are part and a very important one in Shadowrun but that spirit is sort of a "free spirit" (possile AIR) and is maybe related to Harlekin (that infamous undying entity able to wield magic and swords and guns with his own goals nobody really knows)... i say that SEGA Shadowrun comes the closest BUT nothing beats Shadowrun Returns or Shadowrun Hong Kong where you really have to manage a party (or try to beat the game solo like i did!)
@@Stand_By_For_Mind_Controllmao, same here. I was a freshman playing this game too, and I skipped studying for final exams to beat this damn game, and failed to finish a ton of makeup homework. I was always a good test taker, aced the exams, butnot doing the homework caused me to fail. I think I failed two classes that semester, but my memories of this game was so worth it lol.
Same here,i was fascinated back in the day by the art in the manual,shadowrun,doom,sf2 and sim city on the snes were my favourites, defined my gaming life.
@@Stand_By_For_Mind_Control i think something similar happened to me the last year before university but with other games hehehe. This might be too (academically) personal but, do you think that these games from our coming of age days are worth the flunking of subjects or getting the lower grade all in the name of having fun? I mean sometimes we might miss a scholarship but damn do finishing those games stays with you forever
I rented this game from Blockbuster. After that, I worked all summer with my Grandfather as an assistant installing carpets so I could buy this game. I loved Final Fantasy 2, but a game in a modern setting with dark themes and a cool modern soundtrack really blew my mind. I didn't know video games could be like that.
I loved this game as a kid. Was my first dystopian retro-futuristic experience. I never ended up beating it because i didnt quite get the mechanics but i will be revisiting it on my jailbroken PSP SNES emulator now that ive got this amazing, wonderful guide to see me through to the end. Youre amazing, UCBVG
I put in a truly frightening amount of hours in this game as kid. Just trying every keyword on every NPC. My best friend was sure I used a Game Genie because I had Kitsune permanently because I took her to defeat the Rat King. Thank you so much, UCBVG!
Kitsune can be permanently recruited if you take her and beat the rat shaman and is the only character who can live at the end. Glad you did the same back in the day :D
Whaaaat!?! Never expected this one. I was so audibly elated that my neighbor texted me thinking something was wrong. This game kicked off a lifelong love of Shadowrun in me. So much so that I genuinely like the Johnny Mnemonic movie. Thank you UCBVG for another S tier watch.
This channel is truly unique on the platform and I appreciate your work so much. The algorithm showed you to me back when you began during the pandemic in 2020 and it has been a blessing. My two "can't wait" videos have now been done: Guardian Legend and now Shadowrun.
Still one of my favorite titles on the SNES when I was a kid! The atmosphere, gameplay, and story were like nothing I had seen before. I still go back and play this about once a year.
I just want to say thank you for all the hard work and detail you put into these videos. Shadowrun has been my favorite series since I was 8. I was a backer for shadowrun Hong Kong and can't wait for more. Can't wait for you to do the SEGA version and I can't wait for what else you have planned for us!
I second this. Need the sega version now. I didn't have or play the sega version as a kid, but as an adult I played it a bit on emulator and really enjoyed my time with it.
@@donskiver the SEGA version in my opinion is way more difficult and would take a longer video as the way to earn, and keep money is harder in the beginning and it gets a bit easier as you start earning your rep and getting a good team together. I think the SEGA version could easily end up being 2 with all the grinding and hidden story telling that's in the matrix. There's stuff I didn't find out until I looked it up as an adult.
@@tynyetv285Sega version was similar I agree. The Returns series was complete tabletop and I didn’t like it as much as the ARPG style of the console versions.
Fun fact: the world of Shadowrun and Earthdawn are the same world, just different times. The deal with Shadowrun in magic is just coming back into the world, and Earthdawn is what happened later. True story.
I love your commentary in these videos. The information is always top-notch, you always explore multiple strategies, and your humor is fantastic, topical, and well-timed. Thanks for another great episode, UCBVG!
Another thing about keeping Kitsune is that if you beat the Rat Shaman with her and you manage to keep her alive the entire time and then you beat the game with her. She survives with you and you escape together.
Fun fact: This game is moderately inspired by the movie Split Second. Jake Armitage was based off of Rutger Hauer's character Harley (Rutger Hauer also played Batty in Bladerunner which also heavily inspired Shadowrun).
I actually had this game as a kid. Still have it to this day. (As well as another FASA release, mechwarrior). I remember grinding away to get karma and nuyen so I could 100% the game. Spent countless hours doing it. Don't regret a damn thing. Thank you for doing one of my childhood favorites.
Since she is the only free hire npc (after Rat Shaman kill) this armor upgrade is very nice because she's a pretty good mage but very easy to get killed.
I found your channel around Christmas 2022. I finally got through every video and now I'm in the phase where I impatiently wait for the next video release. Love your content!
Perfect video to take my mind off a bittersweet day today for me while today is my birthday, this is also the same day my dad passed away... birthday's just aren't the same...thanks for this video UCBVG, i can relax andtake my mind off today
God I love this game. Have since I was a kid. Such an engrossing game & world. The soundtrack is fricken awesome and atmospheric too. Absolutely love the theme from the Morgue… 3AM on a Summer Night. Actually took the original SNFS for 3AM on a Summer Night & properly mixed it for listening on headphones. It involved doubling the track and panning the duplicat tracks in opposite directions by 50%, in Vegas, to create overlap in the channels, not present in the original SNSF. Without it, it sounded all kinds of wrong over headphones, as you had half the instruments playing In the left ear but not the right and the other half of the instruments in the right ear but not the left. This works on speakers, because of the natural overlap their outputs have… thus mixing them. This isn’t the case with the isolated sounds from headsets phones. Imagine listing to you favorite song but only being able to hear the lyrics in one ear, and the instruments in another. That’s basically what it’s like to listen to the raw SNFS of this game over headphones.
I played the Genesis version, and that's more in a TTRPG system, but the matrix hacking was top-notch for the genesis. I'd love to see the Genesis version run at some point. Lots of little lore eggs buried in that game.
@ U can Beat Video Games The dancing guy with weasels @1:24:15 There is a "game" where you tie off the cuffs of your pants and put weasels in your pants to see how long you can last before you give up. I think it is scottish or something. It was in a Tom Scott video.
Very nice, you covered everything, from the zip gun to the golden naga karma farming, and the infamous vampire money glitch (pretty sure that's not by design) My only gripe is that the assault cannon becomes available way too late, after the volcano. You literally only get to use it once in the Aneki building and that's it, I could have really used that firepower against Drake. Imagine having that beast of a weapon in the early game, you'll be steamrolling through the arena fights unopposed. Alas, all that power, too little too late Just to point out, the Jester cuts Drake's HP by half, that's the main reason for using it That $85k on the 5th floor of Aneki is either a real tease by the developer, an oversight, or they just want to subtly remind you to try out the assault cannon and the full body suit in case you still don't have it by this point, giving you enough to get both in one go The combat feels clunky compared to the genesis version, especially when you need to manually control a crosshair just to aim, while the genesis one just point and shoot after locking on to the nearest target When Cyberpunk 2077 released, I thought it was derived from Shadowrun. Granted there are no dragons, fantasy creatures or magic, but there's a lot of cyberware (though I'm guessing the term is not really exclusive to Shadowrun but the cyberpunk genre in general) and like the snes and genesis game it both features a Japanese megacorporation
you say that ShadowRun Returns was to tie the Sega/SNES titles together.... how? you meet Jake from SNES in the opening tutorial of ShadowRun Returns but there is 0 mention ov Jonnathan or any ov the events in the Sega game :(
This is my second favorite game of all time, only behind the Sega version. I love these two games so much that I made UGC/Mod that connects the two games together. I spent 8 years making it, and I feel I did these two amazing games justice. It’s called “Brothers to the End” and I would love to see whether you think I hit the mark or not.
Very happy that you covered this classic. I rented it from the video store when it was fairly new and I've been a huge Shadowrun fanatic ever since. I hope you cover the Genesis version someday. Speaking of the newest versions on Steam, if you have Shadowrun Dragonfall in your library, there's a reboot of the SNES game in the Steam workshop. Players who attempt to play the reboot will have to contend with all the challenges(glitches) that Steam user generated content is NOTORIOUS for. Still cool to play and there are toilets in many of the buildings. Jake even has one in his apartment. Pretty sweet.
From a dialogue standpoint, Shadowrun on the SNES was definitely super immersive and ahead of its time. But I'm more partial to the Genesis version. It may not have had as many dialogue options, but I feel like it played more like a open-ended tabletop RPG, as opposed to the more streamlined action of the SNES version. I'm actually curious to see how you'd approach a walkthrough for an open-ended RPG like Genesis Shadowrun. One that has story progressions but requires a lot of grinding and random quest taking to reach those objectives.
This game is slept on I believe, and its one of my favorites. Always loved the setting, and that music is so dang good! Love your videos UCBVG, and as always...Super Metroid when? 😏
I remember renting this game constantly when I was a kid, frustrated to all heck when I'd rent it again days later only to have my progress wiped by another renter! :P
UCBVG, I was literally thinking to myself this morning that I wish you'd do Shadowrun. I couldnt believe it when I saw this in my notifications.. I feel like I have superpowers! Thanks for all the hardwork you put into these videos. I'm looking forward to watching this whole thing!
Hey when the ucbvg guy from 1:28... the music track reminds me of something off NBA All Star Challenge Edit: 2:46 beam software. That explains everything.. they also made NBA ASC. Double edit: in spite of that game being also made by LJN
So much of my youth was spent on this game. Surreal seeing this video. Hey mate - what is that tracker/music program shown briefly in the intro? PS - Shadowrun was developed here in Australia!?! Interesting...
Great walkthrough, UCBVG man! Really love the tidbit and the trivia in the video, always something new to learn here. Keep up the good work, brother! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I don't recall the hacking or the magic. Or the secrets and variations based on the things you do. I didn't know about the hirable characters aside from Hamfist either. Mind you I BEAT this game and never discovered over half it's content. This game needs a remake.
Love your videos. Can you also do the Genesis version of the game? That the one I first played as a kid. I still remember the cheat code for the secret menu. ABBACAB I later got the SNES version when the local video rental place closed.
1:39:37 Did you really forget to pick up the 3,000 Nuyen the rat shaman dropped? 2:09:36 If you don't get too close and talk to the "citizen" first, you get a bit of conspicuous dialogue.
"Dr. Maplethorpe do you have any flowers?" *waits to see if anyone gets the reference* "UCBVG, have you been Jacking On again?" *waits to see if anyone gets the reference* :P
I was playing the pen and paper version at this time so I greatly preferred the Genesis version. I thought they did an excellent job transferring Shadowrun to a 16bit console.
I’m sure making these guides takes a lot of time, effort and dedication on your part so thank you very much, you’re doing a fantastic job. I would be ecstatic if you had the time to cover the Breath of Fire series of games. Especially Breath of Fire 3, 4 & 5. Your so thorough with the info which makes it super easy to not only enjoy, watching and listening but also the way you deliver the info makes it easy and fun to learn.
