Then I went to the park where sprinklers were setup and used the shield to block the water stream... in my head it was a huge energy blast. Then the maintenance guy saw me and yelled so I ran away. Very heroic way to end that epic battle... :P

I'm going to give you the craziest tip on Zelda. But it is so weird, that I have to explain it, otherwise it makes no sense. First off, understand that all of Link's items are DIRECTIONAL. This means the direction you face when you use an item (including playing the recorder) matters. When it comes to attacks, Link always attacks in one of four directions. Think of it like using the sword (or wand) to stab/attack up, down, left or right. Everyone know that Darknuts are vulnerable on three sides (his left, his right, and his back) but are shielded on the front. The NES figures out whether the Darknut takes damage or not based not only on the direction the Darknut is facing, but also the direction Link is facing. It makes sense. If Link is facing Left when he stabs a Darknut that is facing right, the Darknut doesn't take damage. It's simple. But here's where things get weird. When a bomb explodes, it creates seven puffs of smoke (which, by the way, do not hurt Link in this game, so there's no need to run from your own bombs). These seven puffs of smoke are what attacks enemies, giving the bomb a very large attack footprint. But remember that I said that attacks are directional? Yes, even the seven puffs of smoke attack in one direction, only. Which direction you may ask? They attack in the same direction that Link was facing when he dropped the bomb. For most enemies this is not an issue. But it is important for Darknuts. Let's say Link drops a bomb while he is facing UP. A Darknut walks DOWN and the bomb explodes BEHIND him. Well, since the bomb exploded behind the Darknut and the Darknut is vulnerable from behind, it should hurt him with shrapnel in his back, right? Wrong. Since the smoke is ONLY attacking in an upwards direction (as Link dropped it while facing up) and the Darknut is facing DOWN (which means he is shielded from upwards attacks), he takes no damage. That's right. The Darknut's shield, which he carries in front of him, can protect him from bombs that explode behind his back! And you would never know this. Why? Because the Darknut will flicker like he took damage and even get pushed backwards by the explosion, making you THINK that you are injuring him, but he actually took no damage. I've watched frustrated gamers unload 16 bombs on a Darknut who survived them all. This is why. You have to strategize the DIRECTION you place the bomb.
@UCanBeatVideoGames
@UCanBeatVideoGames 3 года назад
You know, I knew that the bombs did have a directionality that mattered when facing Darknuts, but I didn't fully grasp all of the interesting corner cases that creates, especially that it looks like the Darknuts take damage, when they haven't. Really interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing!
@_mnejing
@_mnejing 3 года назад
@@UCanBeatVideoGames It should be further clarified that Icarus was mostly correct. Darknuts can be hit from any direction that's not the front. Not really sure what this whole left/back right/front thing is all about. So long as you're not hitting the front of said darknut (basically, a darknut shield is literally invincible), it'll take damage. The long post by Icarus can, again, be whittled down to bombs have a direction too, kinda like a claymore. If you're facing a darknut and you place a bomb, the bomb will not do damage, despite the sprite doing the damage taken animation. If you're facing a darknut and want to do damage with a bomb, turn ANY other direction and place the bomb, so long as the darknut is in range of the explosion, it'll take damage. redcandle.us/The_Legend_of_Zelda This link has a nice infographic specifically about bombing darknuts. It's made by Lackattack24, widely regarded as probably the best Zelda 1 player in the world (though he's currently not holding the record in a few categories, it's probably cause he isn't doing a ton of Zelda lately).

@_mnejing 3 года назад
@@marshalmathers5669 He had WR in every category until recently. You can disagree if you want, that's fine, but he absolutely is one of the best, if not the best, in the world. The use of glitches doesn't mean he isn't good. Also, Up+A isn't a glitch, it's literally in the game manual (www.nintendo.co.jp/clv/manuals/en/pdf/CLV-P-NAANE.pdf) If you think being able to pull off consistent one-frame tricks on a 60fps game isn't skill, you're... beyond saving.

I finally am tackling it with an original cartridge on original hardware and using this guide to figure out where to go and when I get stuck I reference this guide. Obligatory mention for the sake of clarity that the dungeon is supposed to be a manji, not a swastika. I’m totally addicted to this channel, so much nostalgia. You are replaying my childhood one video at a time. Can’t believe I just beat this game in under two hours, even with my dads hand drawn graph paper players guide when I was 10 it took me forever but I was limited to one fairy pond per day. Our Nintendo wasn’t for the kids. And was only like a reward. Only when I got into high school and my friends would loan me n64 games, did I get to play on a regular basis.

1. Leave one enemy on the screen on the Outworld. That way, you won't have to worry about fighting the same number of enemies all over again. 2. The Wallmasters can be stunned all together with the boomerang. After that, kill them to reap in some rupees! 3. The walls to the right of the entrance on Level 2, can be bombed to reached the top of the level. And to get the blue boomerang, as well. 4. The candle (both red, and blue) can be used to kill enemies. The blue one can only be used once per screen, though. 5. The enemies to the right of the warp entrance between Level 1, and 2 give a good amount of rupees if killed by the white sword. 6. The boss of Level 5 can be killed by using the flute first. Then switch to the boomerang, stun it, and finish it with your sword/bomb/arrows/candle. 7. If you leave a strong enemy in a room in a level, and go out the door and come back in, that enemy might sometimes become a weak one. 8. There is win/lose rupees game one screen left of where you start the game from. One of the upper walls needs to be bombed (I forget which one). If you win, save your game. If not, reset it, and try again to rack up rupees early in the game. 9. If there is a controller 2 connected, press Up, and A at the same time to bring up the save menu. 10. Princess Zelda will have on the same color dress Link has, depending on the color of the ring he's using.

@@UCanBeatVideoGames It does. In "LEVEL-8", when I do a "normal" run where I get the magical key (as opposed to a "silly" run where I avoid the magical key and sometimes have 20+ regular keys upon completion instead of A keys), I make sure to leave one blue Darknut alive in the room left of the stairway leading to the 4-headed Gleeok when bombing the wall at the top. Upon retrieving the magical key and backtracking, only one blue Darknut remains. If forced to kill them all to collect health (which sometimes doesn't yield the desired result anyway), the room always refills after returning with the magical key.
