I was under the impression Shaggy was rock solid psychologically and had everything in his life 100% under control. But seeing how his relationship with his mother is still strained and weird, I feel like I can relate to him more than I could imagine. I can also relate to his poor broken upbringing.

Shaggy does have a point. There is a fine line between discipline & abuse and a lot of parents do cross it.

the bible says spoil the rod that spears the child, then it says something about keeping the child dignity after that, which is the part most ppl ignore. i just gained so much respect for shaggy. soon as he said "when are we gonna stop, cus thats how it carries on" i felt that. black culture specifically doesnt understand that alot of the shit we do is toxic, we just shrug it off as "thats how we are" and we make some type of excuse for it. i applaud shaggy for standing up and breaking the cycle cus anyone else would just look at him and say "bro thats ur mom. let it go" respect is respect is respect. change the trash behavior or im out. specially if kids are involved

Sky Santana I agree 200% and they say Millennials are the generation that is “disrespectful” but they fail to say we were the kids who had to deal with the after affects of the war on drugs and many of our parents were either on drugs or had psychological trauma from being apart of that era and the civil rights era as far as those kids growing up and seeing certain things and then becoming parents
@Suehuskins

Mr Lex why do parents do that. My mom did/does same thing. My brother was her favorite and she will tell you that. He and I lived in another state from her and my older sister. My mom would call me all the time. Now I know why. My brother passed away in February and I haven’t heard a word from her. I can’t/won’t call because it is beyond toxic and nothing I do is good enough for her. She is old and she knows better, but doesn’t care.

To some degree, the violence is a consequence of poverty, post slavery, and post colonialism... Listen to African American comedians talk about creative beatings from parents - It's almost a badge of honor. Here the reasoning is that historically, black parents had to teach children to mind, not talk back, behave in order to avoid what whites had the authority to do them at the drop of hat. That behavior continued and is compounded by the severely stressed, derelict communities that have been destroyed by drugs and criminal sentencing and with men extracted. But it sounds like his mom may have been working within some individual emotional and mental health issues that further compounded the situation.

Lamine Diallo that's a cop out to say it's s Caribbean/Jamaican way. I was raised by Caribbean cultured old school strict parents who taught me values, but they were never abusive. It's an individual trait that's probably handed down from one generation to the next. Educating oneself is also a key, and if sounds like his Mom hasn't embraced that.

Mr Lex yeah humans can be cruel. Dealt with that aspect most of my life. The problem is, when a human experience is altered or changed via interaction with humans that are not aware about the how an event or events can impact and scare people or they do know but like to use it as a power. It literally changes your life forever.. the event doesn’t need to be shocking or really harmful it can just be something so simple. your psyche won’t know till you react to it. And how badly it effects you you will really only find out later on down the line. Also you can never come back from this altered experience.. that’s the worst thing. That why online life is so popular. It’s a way of saving yourself from interaction, not effective really but it does help.. anywho yeah humans are mean to other humans animals and plants we are selective in who and what we help which is unnatural because I do believe... well atleast with black and other ethnicities of colour we are not naturally mean. It’s something that is taught to us by interactions or lessons learnt.. have a blessed day.. (my theory is from observation of my own trauma and others around me by the way) try not to not think human interactions are the only option for you to be happy.. plants and animals can help you get through ish too.

Martha J. Jackson any form of abuse is hard to deal with. But f* up the mind through emotional pain is the worst.. because it stays with you. It’s hard to shake off. Stay strong even if you don’t think you can any more. Listen to your body more than your mind... go with feelings instead of what your head is saying.. remember the mind is not actually connected to you body and it can’t process the present moments only the past and the clouded future.. so it’s so important to live in the present and feel your way round the world instead of listening to it sometimes.. We attach the meaning through our mind, like the sensations we feel in our body when facing a problem.. don’t think with your mind all the time as it’s been altered by a uncomfortable event or situation. Stay blessed xxxx

I had the pleasure of meeting Shaggy when I worked at the Camden Palace when he was blowing up with Ravon, he had no airs and graces just a humble down to earth man who made time for everyone who wanted to talk or take a picture a true legend of the Dancehall. It's good to hear a artist like Shaggy give a meaningful interview and not talk the usual nonsense about bad mind and flop man career. Stay blessed Shaggy.

A.M. And Friends I think most of us from Generation X, can relate to that. And not just mothers but fathers as well. Our legacy , if we have children, will be to break the dysfunctional pattern and abusive parenting model of our parents when we parent our children. If people can become more self aware and cognizant then we can raise a healthier generation. When we know better, we do better.

I had to cut out a whole side of my family 2 years ago and am being assessed for C-ptsd because of mine - my mum is a covert narcissist. Well done for cutting the cycle. so great seeing my fellow Jamaican being so vulnerable. He's right, it's this culture of abuse that became normalized. My parents weren't satan, but they weren't angels either. And I have had conversations with them about how the abuse affected me. Watching my own brother parent now, I can see him consciously breaking the cycle and it makes me so proud.

I immensely respects Shaggy' s transparentcy and emotional cognizance. I can relate to his mother' s acidic verbal abuse which had adverse consequences on me. However- as I psychologically developed and went to counseling, it gave me the tools to avert abusive and emotionally women. And- that whole generational verbal abuse is very prevalent in our African- American community. And- that was saged salient advice on choosing wisely one' s inner circle.
