Hi Dennis, Good vid. Had to chuckle when you mentioned the one way anti reverse function. I ran into that this afternoon going the "wrong way" and learned a "new lesson" on a Zebco Quantum Hypercast. Turned out fine. Also ran into an internal worm drive and pawl on this spinning reel ??! (you never know what you might find when you crack the case !) Worked on a cool little Shakespeare 2500 LX ultralight spinning reel this morning. Just came across a Fenwick Fenglass 7 ft ocean rod and identical blank rod @ auction a few minutes ago. They'll have a Penn set up on the next wave. Continued Best Wishes, And a reminder to drink "lots of water" this summer !! Cons

That worm gear is on several spinning reels including the Daiwa Whisker, the Mitchell 300X and Shimano Stradic reels - I like the set up on those - Dennis

Thanks for the video. As a self-claimed student of your videos, I have to pay full attention when watching. I noticed the following: Isn't there a bearing under the plastic gear of the brass shaft to be lubed? Shouldn't there be a drag washer with ears, since the main gear has four indentations in it? Cutting those indentations costs money to the manufacturer. They avoid any unnecessary operation if they can to save money. Therefore, if they are there, then there must be an eared drag washer. Does the schematic show an eared drag washer? Shouldn’t the pawl of line winder be removed, cleaned and lubed? Thanks in advance for your advice.

The bearing should be lubes. The main gear is similar to the Penn Slammer drags where there are studs on the drag washer to hold the gear. That eliminates the need for the earned washer, so tis reel does not come with the earned washer set up Dennis

Agree with you Dennis, those reels are a price point reel and can be replaced for almost the cost of service.

They are, however, if you DIY the maintenance, they are a good value. All reels, regardless of cost should be cared for equally. Dennis

I was showing a buddy of mine your channel when he broke his expensive reel from only ever spraying wd40 as a form of maintenance. I couldn't find the abu garcia max pro, but I may be missing a similar enough reel schematic. Is there any way I can cross reference schematics from manufacturers? I only ask you because you're so smooth in reassembly compared to other channels

Thanks for asking. You should be able to find the max pro schematic in the following link www.reelschematic.com/reel-schematics/abu-garcia-reel-schematics/abu-garcia-pro-max-schematics/#gsc.tab=0 Dennis

I'm just heading back to the work bench to tackle a Shakespeare spinning reel that can't seem to stand up to the workout its young owner gives it. I'm thinking the problem now is a bent spoolshaft. I hope it is so I can talk him into not fixing it anymore. Think I'll give the kid a silver series Daiwa so he has a reel as tough as he fishes.

This was the third time the reel came to me. The owner told me it stuck on part of the rotation and then worked freely hence the bent shaft hypothesis. I was getting pretty fast taking this one apart and found it was nearly impossible to pull the axle shaft out and just as hard to get it lined up with the crosswind block to reassemble. The shaft actually rubbed against the main gear at times. Yep, it was bent and the kid told me it had fallen off his bike. His flexible plastic case Shakespeare is now in the parts reel bin and he's sporting a silver Daiwa 1300 on his to-it-all rod. It is really important to me to keep this kid fishing. He'll catch anything and be happy about it. It reminds me of my youth when fishing was just about fishing and everyday was an adventure.

You should give him the Daiwa to "test". I suspect he will like it and it will stand the pressure of fishing hard. I just had two reels come in with the bent shaft. Not much you can do with them. Best wishes - Dennis

another inside parts story is toss an extra part or two in his parts and see if he asks anybody if they know where they go

Hmm - I have had reel in the bag projects where everything was included and more and I have had projects where almost everything was missing. You never know what you are getting

I found a Shakespeare Agility reel someone tossed away at the local pond. After watching your video I think this reel was dropped and bent the crank shaft just enough to where it didn't engage to crank the spool. It seems to crank now but not very well. Shame Shakespeare doesn't sell parts. I hate companies like that who sell inferior grade disposable products and gip the consumer. Gamo air rifles do the same thing by selling air rifles and refusing to sell replacement parts.

Well said. There is a reason that these reels are cheaper. It does not cost anything to not stock parts. Anything, of course, except your reputation - Thanks

I just bought one, and if I fish bites I will not be able to reel it in, any suggestions? I’m new to this, and have tried everything. It doesn’t reel if there’s any pressure on the line

Have you tightened down the star adjuster for the drags? If you did, the next issue is possible braid slip. Are you using braided line? Did you add a backing to the spool before putting the line on? If not, it could be that the line is not grabbing the spool when you are turning the reel. Take the braid off, put about 15 yards of monofilament on the spool and then add the braid. That will eliminate braid slip and restore the reel's performance Those are my initial thoughts - Dennis

Is there a spring under the spool tension knob? I just picked one up but the free spool isn't slowing down no matter how I turn the adjustment knob near the handle.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 года назад
No, I don't think there is a spring there. A spring would not have an affect on the adjustment, it would just hold tension on the cap to keep it set in place. Try cutting a small shim from a plastic bottle or container that will fit inside the adjuster cap and then install the cap. See if that helps with the adjustment. It is a bush fix, but will work if you need to exert more pressure on the spool - Dennis

What does the max and min knob on the left side of the reel do?
