Technically, the Ryanair landing was the most textbook of the lot. There was no disguising it with the playback speeds.

Idk what y’all are on about, that Ryanair landing was excellent. Controlled, relatively smooth, and prioritized getting the plane down safely.

I like how Ryanair just goes for the goal, no buts, rather have a hard touchdown than stay long in the air with a 20% chance of crashing.

It’s actually passenger safety to land that hard. The wind was pretty rough, so it was good to land it a bit firmer to ensure enough runway. Don’t tell me “but all the others did it nicely, so he could’ve too.” I know, BUT: the risk of a go around was a lot higher. And even if it’s 1/100000 chance. What if he was the 1? And then got an engine failure, hydraulics leak, etc? Right. Just let him land a bit firmer to minimize the risk of anything happening. Props to the pilots of that 737, tough cookie to put down with this wind. Floaty as hell. They did everything perfect. No hesitation, flying the plane onto the runway. Didn’t drop it, didn’t float, perfect. It was firm, but technique perfect for a wind like this

It's still crazy for me to think that we're able to make something that big fly so majestically and safely too.

As someone from Ireland who flies regularly, I can attest that the Ryanair landing was the cleanest. We get pretty harsh, cold winds here which cause extreme turbulence (low pressure, which causes the “dropping” sensation). When that happens during landing, the safest thing to do is to allow the weight of the plane to drop as abruptly as is safely possible, as the harder landing forces the tires to grip and prevents the plane from being blown back into the air or off the runway. Going gentle is only safer during calm weather with higher pressure on ground level, as it will guide the plane better. The first landing wasn’t great, for the reasons mentioned above. There was clearly too much lift under the left wing, which tells me the “wing-breaks” (spoiler-type things on the wings, unsure what they’re called) weren’t engaged soon enough. The wind was obviously working against him though, so it’s quite forgivable. The FlyBe landing was terrible. Way too much bounce, probably due to hesitation. I assume that was a pilot who was fairly new on the job, or who was otherwise in training. The Emirates landing was much too “light” given the weather conditions, which explains why the wheels bounced and didn’t touch down all at once as they were supposed to. The nose was a little too high in the air which almost caused a lift bubble of air to form under the plane, which would’ve possibly caused need for a second landing attempt. Again, it seems the pilot hesitated and didn’t commit the aircraft to a weighted drop. This sort of thing should not happen with a plane of this size, it’s easily large enough to land gracefully in harsh weather if handled correctly. With the Ryanair landing, we see the plane approach the runway not only with speed, but with almost the entire weight of the plane. The plane is outrunning the wind and using gravity to its advantage. I would be inclined to say that’s a very skilled pilot right there. He knows what he’s doing. I’m not a pilot, just a regular flier with an interest in the mechanics.

I find it weird how most of the comments seem to imply that the Ryanair landing was particularly hard. It is by far the best (safest) landing in the video, and not particularly hard. Though I suppose most didn't notice that the shock absorbers compressed twice: first on the initial touchdown, then more as the spoilers deployed.

Actually the Ryanair Pilots where the only ones that made it right, it was clearly windy and in those conditions you rather want a harder landing to have a good contact betwen wheels and runway. If you try to land softly, then your going to jump and lose runway lenght which could end in a runway overrun.

I like how they're mindful of the tires wellbeing, giving them time to come to terms with the fact that they'll be landing.

Happened to me 4 years ago, got on a plane with winds at 50km/h at ground level, literally had my trolley suspended in air while boarding due to the wind, did one hour of flight and at the landing the wind was making the plane roll quite a bit, the last I think 4/5 metres were done like a divebomb, the pilot obviously couldn't risk touching the runway with a wing, yet we made like a 5cm jump on the seats from the hit All in all quite a memorable experience

I believe each airport have different runway lengths. Since Ryanair mostly operates with relatively small airports, there is a higher chance that also the runway is shorter. Taking that into account and also the fact that it looks very windy, it seems the safest way to land without risking an overrun. Besides, I use Ryanair quite frequently and for short trips it's not that bad. Worth the money since the tickets can be extra cheap.

A few months back me and my parents went to visit some family overseas and when we arrived at our destination, I notice there was a lot of turbulence as we were approaching the runway. So, as a precaution I tightened my safety buckle and braced for a shacky landing. Sure enough, the plane jumped, everyone screamed, my parent complained, and I was wondering how come no one else saw it coming.

A Ryanair 737 landing in Göteborg was the hardest I've ever hit the tarmac. Mind you, I was once in a SAS 737 which landed at Kastrup while I thought we were still up in the clouds. Talk about a heart-attack moment!

There's actually a strong safety point in a way Ryanair pilots bumping their planes into runway. Look up Red Wings 9268 Tu-204 crash in Moscow. The pilots performed super smooth touchdown, but due to strong side wind, one of the landing gear carts hasn't properly fixed in position. This caused onboard computer to fail all the braking procedures - engaging reverse thrust and deploying interceptors into braking position. The plane crashed into airport fence and rolled onto highway behind it.

If you want to know why the plane seems to hover in the air before landing, its because of the ground effect: normally the plane pushes the air down, but because the ground is in the way, it creates a large pocket of extra high pressure air that makes the plane kinda "waterskii" or "surf" this wave (yes wave) across the runway. Another reason why the plane takes so long is because you generally keep the plane throttled up to

This is called Ground Effect for those curious. Basically, if you are within a wingspan of the ground, a plane begins to ride on a cushion of air. If the plane stays above a certain speed it is almost impossible to touch down.
