Great video Clay, awesome to get some clarity around the subject of shallowing, laid off and across the line. It's a confusing subject for many of us, but this really cleared things up. Cheers, Troy.

Clay really enjoy your lesson, I'm in Mi. Its winter I try to hit 100 balls a week I take my sc 200 club caddie with me after your lesson on using the hips I went from 76mph club head speed to 84 with the 7i that's 140 to 151 yards incredible thank you.

Awesome video here clay, after filming some of my shots from my last range session I could pick that I was slightly over the top in an almost "Wood Chopping" style, but it was so subtle. This week I decided to make some changes to my swing, shallowing the club and using your method of feeling like turning a motorcycle throttle to achieve that bowed wrist feeling as I start the downswing, I must say it worked very well, a lot straighter shots with a touch of draw, and seeing over 180MPH ball speed with range balls makes a nice sound with my M5 driver and brings a smile to anybody standing nearby. Keep up the great work

Clay, I used to have a horrible problem with a severe angle of attack with the driver (in particular). At its worst, the attack angle was (gulp) minus 9 or maybe worse at times. My problem is compounded by a forward sway. I have generally fixed it BYU’s changing my set up. I now start by loading up on my back keg which is slightly bent. I have almost no weight on my front leg which stays stay. I start by being really loose and loaded up. When i start the down swing I shallow it out so the swing plane coming down is not on the same plane as when I am bringing the club back. Huge difference. My attack is now fairly neutral. It is not a positive attack angle yet, but I am getting there.. Your videos helped in me finding a way to shallow out the club and realizing that the swing going back and the swing going through the ball are not on the same plane. The net results have been very positive - longer, straighter, better trajectory etc.

I always struggle with this, if I get flat or shallow i tend to whip it inside too fast, too much forearm roll, I come over the top...etc. I've tried to change it to make it more aesthetically pleasing but it just leads to chunking and slices like crazy....I feelnlike when I'm that far across the line I will always shallow it AND I have so much room to hit from the inside... it doesn't even feel possible to come down steep AND it forces me to slow down to let the club shallow and not get quick with my backswing...I guess it just depends on what you do naturally...downside is I basically can only hit a draw with across the lime
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 3 года назад
Thanks for sharing Mark! If you have a longer swing then it's much easier. You have time to organize things. If the swing is short and across then it typically leads to a steep transition because their isn't enough time to shallow it out early. You'll have to make compensations later on to get the club back on plane which usually involves early extension. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hi Clay I had a terrible slice, Was very difficult for me to correct it, I eventually found to shallow my swing by bending my knees a lot more, this has helped me so much that I cut 8 shots off my handicap. Cheers I like your information

I noticed my swing is just like that. “Crossed the line at the top of the swing”. My driver is alright for a bi-weekly golfer.. straight with a reasonable yardage, but I will keep in mind that I don’t cross the line too much. 😀

Another great tip - thanks. I did take a video and it seems I need to shallow a bit more - and I think swallowing the club gives me more "pull" on the club. Is this the same for iron's as well? I've also noticed keeping my left wrist flat at the top of the swing helps me keep the club shallow. This allows the club NOT point so far over my head and more down the line I want to hit the ball.
@TopSpeedGolf

Thanks! Yes, this applies to irons too. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Eureka moment: “As long as you give yourself time.” In other words, the more steep/across the line you are in the backswing/top of swing, the less rushed you need to be to shallow the club (eg Couples). So, across the line + quick tempo = no way to get back on plane before impact. The more laid off you are nearing the top, the more you can get away with a quick tempo (eg Rahm, Fowler). No prizes for guessing what results I get with a Nicklaus position halfway back and a Rahm tempo ...

Hey Clay! Thanks for the video! However, I have a question: When drawing my swing plane lines, my driver club head does indeed travel BELOW the red line, but my SHAFT is still more steep on the downswing compared to the shaft on my backswing. Does that make sense? Is that a problem? (Trackman numbers still says I'm hitting in to out with faced closed to path).
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 года назад
Hi Petter, it sounds like you're coming down steep then standing up to get to plane to drop to the inside. It's hard to say without seeing your swing. If so, I would recommend working on getting it shallowed out so you don't have to stand up and flip losing compression. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hey clay , I've been working on bowing the left wrist to square the club face. Wondering if strengthening the grip yields the same result? Or is there a downside I'm not seeing?

Clay, is it true that you must start your downswing with your hips in order to shallow out the club? I've read that if you start with your upper body, then it's virtually impossible to shallow the club.
@TopSpeedGolf

I, use to, suffered from this too. A place to start and keep in mind. They are two different swings. Your set up and angle of attack on the ball are different for each shoot. A lot of really good stuff available. Better than I can convey in this post.

Hi John, mechanically, the swings between the two are really the same. The only difference is that you miss the ground and hit up into the ball with a driver and make ball first contact then hit the ground with the irons. It's the same swing but one hits the ground and one doesn't. If you think about it in this simple way then it should help. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hi Ernie, it's hard to say without seeing your swing but it sounds like you're sliding your hips instead of rotating. I would recommend focusing on pushing with the lead lead to open the hips in the downswing. Best of luck! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Hey coach I have a question on your driving stance are your feet at equal pressure or do we have a little bit more weight on one side than the other as we are driving the ball? I hope this question makes sense LOL
@UFBear15
@UFBear15 4 года назад
i'd imagine he'd tell you that you want it equal at stance and on your heels.. Then it's gonna shift from right foot in swing and back left coming down as your balance. One thing that's always helped me hit straighter bombs, don't let your feet get too active, especially that front heel. Just always feel yourself behind the ball at impact
