This is a breath of the freshest air I've had in a while. I love Japan. Japanese history is one of my favorite regions to focus on. Given the vagueness and obscurity of Japanese history, it's hard to find anything before the Heian Era. But this is finally shedding 'some' light on history that I hungered for. Thank you very much.
Great video man! Been watching all your Japan series Haha Animaniacs "charming and loveable"...is true Will definitely give you a shout out when I get to do a Japan video :)
So, I started to digging your videos and I just wanted to say: congrats! Your content is great. First it’s one of the most compelling on RU-vid ‘bout japanese history and culture. Second, your sense of humor sometimes is perfectly pungent (you got me at the Kardashan mention....). Keep the hard work.
Yeah animism is very old. I'm not sure it should be called a religion though. Animistic beliefs developed independently in different cultures, so there is no common "Animism" religion like, say, Buddhism.
your videos are very informative. as a westerner, it is very helpful for someone who wishes to get in touch with the history of these magnificent people.
Hey I love the videos. I was really interested in learning more about Japanese history and your videos really make the content more interesting. I hope you continue to put out more videos like this!
4:45 actually... no thats normal to me. Were Finnish americans but we still do that. We do our own butchery and use the inedible elements as fertilizer. Its more common than you'd think. Fish too. More salmon guts=heartier vegetables. This is ancient knowlege.knowledge. Its practical first, spiritual second.
Epimetheus' videos are how I came across your channel! They're very good to. You guys have Extra Credits/History-esque videos and as their creator gets embroiled in scandals more and more subscribers are looking for new channels and you have the potential to fill that niche. I've recommended both of you as alternatives on their subreddits. Good luck!
Shinto have many sects. Some belief with Chinese way. Some belief with Buddhist way. Some belief with Chinese and Buddhist mixed way. Japanese imperial family choose oldest sect of Shinto.
Thank you so much for the video I was extremely happy when the first thing I saw after waking up was the notification of this video!! You made a great job again!
From Google: These mirrors had a design on the back side, while the front was gilt with tin and beautifully polished to create a reflective surface. You can still see your face in some of these early bronze mirrors even now. Cool video. I learned a lot. Thanks.
One use of the Magik Bronze mirrors was to observe the sun Crows[ sunspots ]. A predictions tool for Solar Minimum and Maximum The Chinese were the first to record such things... that we know of
Linfamy I’ll try to combine stuff from Thailand with things in Japan and maybe do some comparisons. Next video going up in a couple minutes about street food in Thailand and Japan. I have some free time here (that’s what a vacation is for, I guess) so I am trying to make a video per day at least. No cutting equipment here, so I am back to one-take vlogs for a bit :)
Wait a moment, deer went extinct, but there are deer in modern Japan, they're even an attraction in natural reserves and camping parks across the country, and the terror of highways. Maybe they went extinct in the south and were reintroduced from populations in the north centuries after. What is completely gone since at least the 4th century AD is the japanese wolf, I believe the Hokkaido wolf still exists but their numbers have decreased because of the cattle and livestock industry.
The Yayoi came form a land where the bear was called Kom or Gom. Could it be that the similar sounding word "Kami" was a term for bear, which over time became an object of worship?
This is certainly a subjective generalisation of Japanese shamanism. There is a lot that can be said about ancient interpretations of these stories and scriptures I wouldn’t be quick to dismiss any of their practices and traditions they certainly pertain to an eclectic understanding when looking at ideology and philosophy I would almost say they were ahead of some of their ancestors respectively.
Scapula divination was mentioned in connection to the new emperor Naruhito. I think it was related to finding out the best date this fall for holding the festival in honor of his accession?
I think Animistic believes were better than modern organised religions people were just worshiping and looking after the environment and yes NOW I am romantizing it
The Mirror is, of course, one of the three Sacred Treasures of the Emperor. So the main purpose!of the mirrors was probably to reflect sunlight and also ones personal appearance.
6:10 I love how this is so often the case. Archaelogists find ancient object that could've clearly been used for practical purposes or simply as decoration. Archaeologists: "Must've been ritual"
In Mongolian shamanism the mirror is called toli and is mainly used to protect him from the spirit, but also as a good spirit vessel, through which he could trap things and also reflect his power, called wind horse. Must have had a similar use...
That heron and crane stuff has a mythological story with it like it appeared as a lady in a poor man’s house and the rest of the story .........forgot Hope you can do something about this story References available in 90s cartoon like ninja hattori and doraemon ( though it’s vague )
I've been reading a history of miko that talk about the potential possibilities that miko were worshiped as kami themselves before they were considered children of kami, then later mediums for kami. This text also talks about the relationship between early miko and prostitution, which may have been motivated by economics or ritual prostitution? (Or a mix?) I'm very curious about these aspects of miko history, as it seems like the significance of miko have been intentionally diminished in shinto over time. (Being regarded as mostly assistants to priests today..?) The text is 日本巫女史 by Nakayama Taro (not associated with the weirdo politician of the same name)
Your explanation of animism is probably wrong: The idea, that you invent gods in order to explain thing you otherwise could not, is very modern and based on our scientific world view that evolves around causes and effects. Ancient people didnt want to explain things, they probably rather wanted to define the human place and role in the world.
Hi I like the video. It's entertainment. Animism isn't the worship of objects or souls. It's a worship of the root energy. Here's a breakdown of how animism still perisirs today: Physics: The Big Bang Energy Condensing to make matter Hebrew/Arabic Culture: The Ether Shinto: Musubi Chinese Culture: Chi European Religions: The Holy Spirit I specialize in root pattern discovery and my research led me to this all being the same thing. Many people look at animist as weird but, they're worshipping the same energy they believe exist. Just the root of it all.
I wonder if the importance of mirrors was so that people could observe their spirit or the spirits of others while still living? They may have believed that reflections were spiritual manifestations of the physical world. Just a passing thought.
Scythians carried bronze mirrors, every man, woman and child carried a mirror. The mirrors both guarded against evil spirits by "catching them". This concept of mirrors capturing spirits seems to have been pan-Eurasian, and can be seen in the Grimm's fairy tale of Snow White. "Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who's the fairest of them all?" (Guess with a mirror you have the original poke ball. "Got to catch'em all!")
I love how in archeology "fertility" anything just means "yeah we found a bunch of dildos but we don't wanna put that in a peer reviewed article sooooooo we're just gonna....call it...yk.... but we all know what it means"
2:02 It's time for Animaniacs And we're zany to the max So just sit back and relax You'll laugh 'til you collapse We're Animaniacs! Come join the Warner brothers (and the Warner sister, Dot) Just for fun, we run around the Warner movie lot They lock us in the tower whenever we get caught But we break loose and then vamoose, and now you know the plot! We're Animaniacs! Dot is cute, and Yakko yaks Wakko packs away the snacks While Bill Clinton plays the sax We're Animaniacs! Meet Pinky and the Brain, who want to rule the universe Goodfeathers flock together Slappy whacks 'em with her purse Buttons chases Mindy while Rita sings a verse The writers flipped We have no script Why bother to rehearse? We're Animaniacs We have pay or play contracts We're zany to the max There's baloney in our slacks We're ani-mane-y, totally insane-y (Here's the show's name-y) Animaniacs! Those are the facts! (I had to look it up because I forgot parts.) (Also, for the, “Meet Pinky and the Brain, who want to rule the universe Goodfeathers flock together Slappy whacks 'em with her purse Buttons chases Mindy while Rita sings a verse The writers flipped We have no script Why bother to rehearse?” There’s alternate lyrics because some of the lines weren’t relevant in the re-boot. Here’s the alternate lyrics; Meet Pinky and the Brain, who want to rule the universe. Our brand new cast who tested well in focused group research. Gender balance pronoun neutral! And ethnically divers! The trolls will say We’re so passé We’re reading metaphers. (I have no idea how to spell that.) anyways, it’s a good show. Check it out! Yakko, Wacco, Dot: Those are the facts!
The dogu were aliens? :D. It's funny how the aliens supposedly taught the early Japanese things like tea ceremonies, but not how to smelt metal and make computers.
Linfamy The truth is stranger than you think. Look it up ("Symbols of an Alien Sky"). In the grand scheme of things, a peaceful co-existance with nature, and a spiritual knowledge is far more important than this crass material stuff you people worship.
I would not show contempt for those who believed in animism. On a subatomic or quantum level, 'energy' is universal. Supposedly inanimate objects such as rocks are teeming with atoms, electrons, etc
