Courtesan life is truly harsh... But let us not also ignore the fact that the Fujiwara clan famously married their daughters into the Imperial Family making them relevant for 200 years.
@kkkrevolution3307but even so let's not forget that the fujiwara clan married their daughters into the imperial family gaining them 200 years of control
Linfamy, you're the only one who has ever gotten me to sit through a sponsorship segment, and very much the only one who has made me enjoy every second of it.
I imagine that this was a terribly lonely existence for these Courtesans, even while being surrounded by all of these clients who claimed to love or even just care for the Courtesans. Sometimes offering a caricature of affection can be a very cruel thing to do to somebody. It makes me wonder what the rate of suicide was among Courtesans in the Edo period.
Did you forget the last video where the guy literally sold his high position in Edo for his courtesan and got in trouble with the court? If anything actually loving them was the problem, not the opposite
@@nonamepasserbya6658 That's nice, but life for most hookers, back then and now, is not the same thing as "Pretty Woman." And especially in a culture like Japan's that has traditionally placed so much value on honor and saving face, it wouldn't exactly go over well if word got around that a man abandoned his family/wife and/or rescued some whore from a brothel. Johns don't go to whores for love, then or now.
*Changed And are you sure? It looks the same. Are you actually making a joke? Because I can't see facial signs in a comment, so sarcasm isn't really fit as a joke in text form.
@@bidoofismyking8962 depends which party. A gathering where you discuss a more intelligent topic, yes I am. A party where all you is talk about celebrities, get drunk for no real reason but to try to cope with life etc. No, not my thing.
i mean but is it? ive never been a supporter of any sort of porn. strictly because being a man, ive been around mostly men my whole life, and i wouldnt allow most of them anywhere near my sister. like, yeah being 30 (in the US btw), women in the sex industry are, not guaranteed obviously, but for the most part just treated like meat. an old pornstar died just recently at 43 and like 99% of the article only talked about her porn career. in essence, im saying most guys, at least to me in my country, just see women strictly as an object that they can relieve stress into, and thats it.
Being a prostitute has always been a humiliating and miserable thing to do. And the worse thing is, most these women didn’t choose this. They were sold to the brothel as little girls, where the pimps would just hang around and wait for them to get older. ((They would still usually start way too young for sex, because it’s not like a pimp cared about the emotional well-being of girls.)
That was the single funniest sponsorship segment I have ever seen. I was actually laughing aloud and had my housemates staring at me in confusion. Loved it!!
Japan has a history of considering women over the age of 25 to be unmarriageable. There's a rather condescending term for it: "Christmas Cake". It comes from the idea that nobody wants to get the treats made for the Christmas season after the 25th.
@LaydiNite What I find funny about that idea is that people who really wanted to be that said other person wouldn't even care about age like being over 25. Honestly, it was just a dumb talking point that I feel was used by that one person who had a higher status then most others.
Since you mentioned love can ruin them & showing Komurasaki from One Piece reminds me that her name might come from Miura-ya Komurasaki which was a real life Oiran from the Edo period with a tragic love story that is immortalized in Kitagawa Utamaro's painting “The Lovers Miura-ya Komurasaki & Shirai Gonpachi” where Gonpachi committed crimes to buy her freedom but it caused his death which made the her committed suicide after learning of his death
I find these videos fascinating. I can't help but think of how for seemingly all of human history, men have been obsessed with women and our sexuality, and that obsession leads to systems that encourage objectification, sex trafficking, early deaths, etc. Fascinating and very sad. Grateful to live during a period where women have more choices (in general) and less of us have to consider selling ourselves in such a manner to survive. I hope the day comes where this is never needed for women, and only those that are truly interested in living in such a manner do so.
As far as biology is concerned, literally nothing matters aside from reproducing. Living, dying, accomplishments, morality, ethics, all irrelevant compared to just making children. After all, the only people who's genes continue are those who have children. That's the kind of personality that evolution creates. When you account for that, and the fact that men and women have two completely different reproductive goals, it becomes pretty clear *why* society has developed as it has. For men, having as many children as possible with as many women as possible with as little investment as possible would result in more children surviving and continuing on. Comparatively, for women, having as many children as possible with a single man who is heavily invested in only her and her children makes much more sense, as women are extremely vulnerable when carrying children, and feeding and raising them requires significant energy and time expenditures. All of this being said, I don't think I need to tell you which strategy is more ethical and appropriate, especially in the modern day. But unfortunately, the difference in male and female psychology when it comes to sexuality is just built into our biology. History reflects this very clearly. The good news is that, as we become more advanced as a society and we, hopefully, acknowledge these differences and their motivations, we can work to overcome what our biology tells us to do and start to choose what our minds know is correct and moral.
@@KeterMalkuthyour comment has good points but there are some big issues with your reasoning, particularly on the men's side. Human males absolutely do benefit from spending resources on their own children. Unless a species has lots of offspring that develop quickly or very competent lone mothers, the strategy you mentioned doesn't work. Usually, only one human is born at a time and it takes YEARS for it to do anything useful. We survived by being social and cooperative bc that's what works for our children. In this situation, the man that spend the least time taking care of other people's offspring and instead focus on his own is the one that succeeds. That's one of the main reasons why so many patriarchal societies treated women as property of their husband: it was a way to almost guarantee the offspring is theirs. It's also why female cheating was often punishable by death while male cheating was considered normal. Males still get tons of variety in their gene pool by cheating, but females don't. So yeah, the idea this model benefits women is bullshit. It's made by men, for men. No wonder some of the most violently misogynistic people nowadays hate divorce so much lol
@@DragonNyah That's true, I spoke perhaps too broadly for the sake of making my point regarding the biological drivers clear. Rather than encouraging a complete lack of investment on the part of men, it encourages men to be more liberal with their investment in several women, whereas women have incentive to be more invested in a single partner. The primary facet I wanted to illustrate is that the behaviors that biology encourage are, to some degree, directly contrary between men and women. What behaviors benefit women and what behaviors benefit men, from the perspective of solely continuing their genes, while similar, are noticeably different. Obviously, being loyal to your partner and treating them right and investing yourself in one person is the correct choice in the modern day. Our mortality rates are significantly reduced so there's very little imbalance between our gender ratios, we all implicitly understand the emotional betrayal associated with cheating, and we all know children deserve to have two dedicated parents. However, biologically, we're not all 100% wired to adhere to that goal. By acknowledging that, we can find solutions and work around what hormones and instincts tell us to do.
OOOOOOOO YAY NEW TRAGIC HISTORY VIDEO ABOUT A SUBJECT I NEED FOR A FIC! but also, awwww dang :( I just *know* they went through some more bad things I'm glad to learn more about Tayu and Oiran, and Geisha! It'll help bring my fic to life
Always happy to sit out the sponsoring segments made by Linfamy, is guaranteed entertaining! And love the tiny cookie crumbles on the face of the tayu holding a kawaii cup😁
Good show, as always. I especially like the OLD JAPANESE STORY *hint hint wink wink* framing device. I am curious as to why you've been so fond of the ladies of the night in the Edo period recently. Also, the "background noise of humping and sobs" line got me pretty good.
Sometimes I read about a topic and there are so many interesting aspects of it, it's hard to stop. I'm reading about the history of food in Japan now, so you might see more videos about that soon...
Please do am episode om traditional clothing!! they are all just so beautiful, but on the internet there is no info about traditional japanese clothing, they just tell you about kimonos and call it a day! ;c
That was, hands down, one of the best and most hilarious promos I’ve ever heard lmao And Im totally using “aggressively broke” from now on. It spoke to my soul lmao
This is one of the most interesting as well as entertaining channels on this platform! There's so many beautiful and fascinating artwork and I love the narrators humour too 😊 Sometimes I listen to this with my soon to be husband. My soon to be husband is half Finnish 🇫🇮 half Japanese 🇯🇵 and also, one of my favourite movies of all time is Takahashi Mike's Imprint. I'm so happy that I subscribed 😊 Thank you 🙏🫶 and greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
I don't know what he means by figure 8 pattern, so maybe it's not exactly the same, but the way he describes these Courtesans kicking their legs out when they walk immediately reminded me of the way Tifa walks in the original FF7. I always thought that her walk cycle was very odd, because she has this circular way she kicks her leg out and brings it back in as she moves forward. I wonder if that walk cycle was designed with the dayo in mind and what they meant for that to say about her character if anything :x
I wish there could be a resort that does the experience of being a palace princess or consort without the bad parts. It would be pricey but it seems so cool! XD and there's something like that in the UK where you can stay in a castle with servants!
But it was all bad parts. Your life revolves around being forced to sleep with men you don't want and not being able to live the life you do want. it is called sex slavery for a reason.
You could buy a Japanese castle and turn it into a tourist destination...I mean. Have 350000 dollars... laying around. You can own your own Japanese castle and you can hire hospitality staff to man the Tourist castle and turn it into a hotel. Closest thing or equivalent to an actual Japanese Lady and Lord experience...
A RU-vidr called "asked Shojo" interviewed a Tayu. There are three I think in Kyoto left. They weren't prostitutes but the highest rank of geisha. She seemed annoyed about the prostitute thing lol. But I just wanted to mention that.
You have to remember that the modern Taiyu is not like the historical Taiyu as the former is a product of legal fiction lobbied for by geishas at the time the 1957 anti-Prostitution law was enacted since the Taiyu are considered "Prostitutes" by the letter of that law...
Never thought a history youtuber had a proper sexy personnality w/o really showing themselves before. Also the drawings and the narration, I don't have am epic description for it but they work perfectly. Thanks Linfamy
Its amazing how the second I get super into looking at the history behind oiran and tayuu, Linfamy uploads a ton of videos on the subject. I do have one question though: I understand that tayuu and oiran are different, tayuu being pre 1750 and oiran being post (at least in yoshiwara). But how were they simular, and how were they different? Based on my research, their appearances differed in a few different ways, and oiran were, while still trained in the arts, much less trained than tayuu. Not to mention all the different types of rank within the oiran umbrella and ranks beneath the tayuu. It gets very confusing very quick.
Hi. Thanks for you videos. Do you think you can analyze/retell the story of the movie memoirs of a Geisha? Different scenes of the movie, the burden or importance of decisions are still confusing to me because I lack the cultural background.
The book and movie are only very loosely based on reality and got many things blatantly wrong. It actually pissed off the woman who was one of the inspirations for it, named Mineko Iwasaki, to the point where she sued the author for defamation. There is a book called "Geisha: A Life" that was written by her. She worked as a geisha and talks about her personal experiences.
I remember being read the story of Kachō and Kayoiji as a kid, of course it was made more kid friendly and gave a lesson about how kindness and generosity will make you more likable than beauty and money. It felt like whiplash when I heard this because they left out the part that they were both courtesans, they even used their names in the story. I wish I could find the one i got read, the website took it down years ago, probably because parents didn't like the origin of the story
my original comment got deleted cause youtube terminated my channel 😭 but anyways, thank you for making videos about Tayu! They have been useful for my fics and written rp/collab stories.
When I was a teenager, I was in love with Japan. It was a magical place, I thought. I was enamored with ninja and shinto, and pretty much everything. Naturally, I wanted to learn more about this wonderful place. That was my mistake. The more I learned, the less magical Japan became. It was a country like every other country in the world, complete with problems, unfortunate history, ordinary people, and no magical anime fantasy. Oh, to have that ignorant bliss of youth again. Reality bites. I still love Japan, for what it is, not what imagine. This video-all your videos-remind me of that. I feel for the human beings of Japan's historical pleasure districts. What a hard life! That life would genuinely suck ass. (No pun intended here.) Whenever my life starts to suck and things look down, I can always say to myself, "I could've been a tayu." (How I'd pull that off, being a man and not a particularly good-looking one, I don't know.) Your video taught me that, Linfamy. Domo arigato gozaimasu!
So, this has to say, this has to be the closest equivalent to guys and gals trying to sell alcohol at these clubs and bring in certain level of money per night...
I can't believe I watched the entire sponsor segment cause it was entertaining... Bro you are just born in the wrong era, you will fit in the Edo era perfectly XD
