What a fantastic recording from a guy with a special voice, love him as Shane Fenton or Alvin Stardust. A remarkable vocalist from a golden a golden age of music and fashion.
RIP Alvin Stardust AKA Shane Fenton. This song does not sound out of key nor does Alvin sound flat. It's an old non state of the art studio recording. Some of them sounded dodgy but no way does anyone sound below par. Early 60s for crying out loud. To me the quality just captures the feel of that era. God I wish I was in my late teens during that time. I was born 2 decades too late. Alvin/Shane you were privileged to be a part of that magical musical era and that magical musical era was privileged to have you and I salute your amazing contribution.
Bernard William Jewry, brother of Juke Box Jewry. Funnily enough he assumed the name of Shane Fenton from a singer he replaced and Alvin Stardust from Peter Shelley, a singer/ composer who had his own career ( Gee Baby ) and who didn't want to assume the Stardust persona.
Shayne Fenton, I will always be surprised by him and I never get tired listening to him Hope his fans have a very nice Christmas and a Happy New Year all the best, BRI - DAR
Love his early stuff as Shane Fenton this wasn't a hit with cindys birthday this is brilliant pleased he got the success he deserved as Alvin Stardust 10 years later
i can remember driving through rochdale in the late seventies maybe early eighties and there was a painting of shane on a gable end of a house , local lad you see, like myself a, moody guy !
hi winemeister, yes you are right Shane Fenton became Alvin Stardust, although Shane Fenton was not his real name, that being Bernard Jewry I believe. The original Shane Fenton (Johnny Theakstone) died at the age of 17. Eden Kane of course is a different guy and as you say Peter Sarstedt (Where do you go to my lovely) brother.
He was just plain Bernard when I dated him --- sometimes Shane --- but he was a lovely lovely guy --- and when he became Alvin Stardust I just thought NO NO NO. That was not him!
Second generation sound source, uploaded to youtube that destroysthe quality further. this kind of music sounds sharper and cleaner when played on a record player. modern synthesised music is designed for youtube/Internet listening. or just get a cd copied straight from the master tape if one is available, and hear it exactly as it was first recorded
Brandyandcoke, I hope you're not saying Eden Kane was Alvin and Shane. Shane became Alvin later on, eden Kane was Richard Sarstedt, Peter and Robin's brother. But Eden wrote this if that's what you're saying.
He would've sounded great with the Nashville A-team in that era, at RCA or Bradley's Barn. They covered all the big hits on Elvis, Roy O., Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline....endless list. He has a kind-of hillbilly edge, like Roy O., even Elvis. Dramatic yet not assuming. Great stylist. I wonder if Nashville even considered it...
I was always disappointed with the material that Shane Fenton used after the brilliant, underrated "Moody Guy", including this one. At least it's not as dire as "Cindy's Birthday".
I saw them at Portsmouth Savoy Ballrooms in 63 with my would be wife Eden Kane wrote the song and the Fentones were a great Band a Sound that matched The Shadows I thought when he became Alvin Stardust the songs were not as good , But I hated that period along With that crap act Gary Glitter; Eden Kane had a great voice for me a bit different
Keith this is exactly how it would have sounded when you heard it first time round. It's the quality of the recording that makes it sound that way. Technology has moved on so much that we settle for nothing less than perfect now and we've become used to it. The song could be remastered by a producer if it warranted it but in my opinion that would spoil it.
