Those engines may be small and certainly not the most poweful, but this aircraft sounds amazingly quiet, and this particular model has an impressive safety record. I would fly on it anytime

The A340 is a gorgeous plane. However, it's always funny how long it takes the 300-version's engines to get this plane up in the air. ;)

Great video! I havent flown the A340-300 for over a decade so it`s nice to see the experience from the inside. At the moment they are getting brand new cabins installed on 4 out of 8 aircraft and SAS will hold on to them for at least another 7 years before their leases are up..

Nice presentation of the flight. Been traveling this distance over 20 times since 2012. Now I looking forward to the moment they upgrade the planes. Sitting in these chairs for 10 hours is hard. Not easy to sleep either when your tall. Next flight to Shanghai from Copenhagen will be in December 2015.

Shanghai PVG is such an international airhub with airlines from so many different countries.
@qilinmelb

But why does SAS use such an old aircraft for such a longhaul international flight? The aircraft is really old, a bit outdated.
@doc7austin
@doc7austin 7 лет назад
+Lim Chi SAS is poor, hence, for a long time they couldn't afford modern planes or refurbs
@qilinmelb
@qilinmelb 7 лет назад
But the safety record is quite ok, right? But as I know, SAS doesnt have a huge network of destinations. Scandinavian countries are on the top of the developed world, so curious how come SAS comes like this.

i've always liked the A340's but those engines were absolute dogs man it was painful to watch such a beautiful bird struggle to get airborne,sadly they were discontinued back in 2011 but i would love for Airbus to bring this 4 engine beauty with the distinctive belly landing gear back with more powerful engines!hey Airbus are you guys reading this?LOL

The A340-500 & A340-600 cN climb a lot faster than the A340-200 and 300 series.
@schumi246
@schumi246 4 года назад
At MTOW, the -300 has a power to weight ratio of 0.224, while the -600 was 0.276, however the 777-200LR has 0.301. Its no wonder why the A340 always seems like it took so long to get off the ground.

Shanghai Pudong Air Traffic Control is EXTREMELY inefficient, as exemplified by the long delays in this video. The airport has 9 runways (16L, 16R, 17L, 17R, 33, 34L, 34R, 35L & 35R) and in 2017 the total 'movements' (ie takeoffs & landings) for the airport were 496,774. By comparison, Heathrow has just two runways (27L & 27R), yet its 2017 movements were 474,033. This translates to 237,012 movements per runway for Heathrow versus just 55,197 per runway for Pudong, a runway utilisation of 23% if we set Heathrow to 100%.

For safety legislation reasons 4 engined aircraft are less overpowered the 2 engined aircraft; that makes them more efficient in some ways, but slower climbers all things else being equal.
@nntflow7058
@nntflow7058 9 лет назад
Britt Unculus Nope, you need to multiplied the amount of resources to generate power to those 4 engines. Also, maintenance and prices for those engines are not cheap. It's cheaper to buy and maintained slightly expensive 2 engines compared to buy or operate 4 less expensive engines.
@Arcadiez
@Arcadiez 8 лет назад
people used 4 engines because of higher reliability and then can use a longer EROPS, but now a days the engine are so well made and maintained that it is more efficient to use two engines, for say the 777 have the longest ETOPS approval around 5h. It is cheaper to buy two engines than four and it is cheaper to maintain them. Most of the newer A/C are going to use two instead of four Engines, look at 787, a350 etc. Only a few will remain four engines as they still require more thurst as 747 series and a380 series. a340 is dead content, it's going to either be replaced by a350 or a newer version of a340 with two bigger engines.

@Bennewman11
@Bennewman11 7 лет назад
pdmmdk The Pilots have to calculate the Flex temp to derate the engines power settings on take off. This is why the engines feel under powered they are derated to take account of air pressure, temperature, Aircraft weight, runway length. So the aircraft will takeoff safely and will decrease engine wear and increase engine life :)
