Fun fact: in the original manga, Gildarts was eluded to, being mentioned here and there throughout the times spent in the Guild Hall. But since the anime team weren't sure about how far the anime could go popularity-wise, they scrapped those bits in case they never made it that far.
yeah and the best mention is when Laxus ask Mystogan who he think to be the strongest in the guild, anime say "don t forget Erza", but mangas say Gildarts and Laxus replie "That old man ? he didn t even came back"
This is the reason why we barely see Shanks in One Piece. I guess, piracy is not making enough to make a living, so he need a second job to makeup for it hahahahaha.....

But Shanks appeared in 1997 whil gildartz in 2009 ; red hair, black cape, left arm down, MC considers as some kinda 2nd father, isnt this a bit too obvious he is inspired or just entirely copied from Shanks?Same looks same personality...

Not everybody who has watched fairy tail has watched one piece and same way around. (Sorry I suck at grammar)
Gildarts is the true strongest in Fairy Tail. While he definitely shares a lot of similarities with Shanks, but he has his own unique story and character arc.

Guys, Mashima didn't work with Oda, he stated he never worked with other mangakas back in the time Rave Master was on going. It's crazy how people still share this false information from many years ago.
I'm not sure if Hiro Mashima was inspired THAT much from Oda (Oda is THAT good), or if it's just a coincidence that so much of the characters have similarities.
As stated, Gildarts in the manga looks absolutely nothing like the Gildarts of the anime. Why does the anime look differs from the manga? Who know. I'm guessing its also the same reason why both Robin and Marco had such different looks early on in the anime as compare to what they would look like later on in the anime and what they actually looked like in the manga.
In the manga, Gildarts was actually mentioned a couple times before his introduction. Thing is, there was no guarantee that anime was gonna continue past the Laxus fight, so any mention of him was left out.
Shanks is father figure to MC. Gildarts is father figure to MC. Both lost LEFT arm. Both very strong. THE CLOAK! Last but not least, the looks. Need I say more?
I know exactly how you feel, back when I first watched this I was so obsessed with the backstory of it all. The dragons specifically, but you'll be happy to hear that you are slowly approaching a bit more of that dragon action you wish for.
I think those 10 year or 100 year quests are called that because they are so difficult that either they haven't been completed in that time frame, or it is expected to be completed in that time frame. Not sure my self, but any body correct me if I'm wrong

100 years quest, maybe Gildard somehow involved with void century he meet a dragon there, and it explain how Shanks can meet with Gorosei It make sence since Shanks as Gildard he don't have a scars in his face yet but after his inner had damage he choose to chill out as a pirate
Actually, in the manga, Gildarts, though resemble Shanks, was not that similar looking to Shanks. They resemble in the hair length, or style, or even facial hair, but the facial shape was much more distinct. It was even more so after the later seasons. It was the anime who decided to make him look more like Shanks.

Funny thing about the gildarts and shanks look alike. this was done on purpose by hiro mashima, he never really goes into much detail why they look the same, however it has something to do to the fact he is a big one piece fan and that he want a homage to a character from the show so he put it on a character who isnt around as much and not making him someone who is always around. PS: after a while, you will see there is alot of diffrences between gildarts and shanks.
The scene with Gray teaching Juvia to eat the sandwich is like 10 times funnier in the english dub. If anything, I recommend you watch it for at least that moment if you can. 😂
Alot of the big creators in anime worked on the OG dragon ball series together thats why there tends to be a lot of tributes and inspirations from other animes in animes like one piece naruto cos theyre all friends :D
The reason Gildarts was not mentioned is bc the anime was supposed to end at the festival arc, thus not introducing Gildarts. They do make vague mentions of him in the manga.
This episode really emphasise how good fairy tail is at hype, we get introduced to a new wizard who everyone agrees is the best in the guild, the town literally changes just so he can walk in, and yet he failed his quest and got completely destroyed. For those who are caught up in the anime you'll know why this is great hype and for those caught up in the manga, Oh Boy
Gildarts!! My favorite character. I read that Gildarts became so popular that they wrote him out of the manga a few times because he overshadowed Natsu.

@@Just_Some_Guy_with_a_Mustache Yeah but the marines would've beaten Shanks as well , they stopped because they would've taken more damage than they needed to and they had already achieved their objective , same with Blackbeard. I still don't think Shanks is stronger than the other Yonko tbh. I like him more than the others because of his personality and how mysterious he still is , I can't wait until the day we see a serious Shanks fight.
@@lordrimuru2003 They most likely wouldnt have beaten him, he had his crew with him which are pretty strong themselves. Shanks had fought against Whitebeard and Kaido with only one arm, He may seem the weakest yonko but keep in mind that all the others have two arms and a devil fruit (2 with Blackbeard) plus a giant fleet while Shanks has only one arm, 1 ship with a crew with most likely 100 people or less, and no devil fruit.

One Piece was made before Naruto. One Piece was made 1997 and Naruto was made 1999. So he didn’t know “Naruto” was gonna be created when he was gonna name Sanji that. It’s just a huge coincidence
On the very small chance you read this and no-one else has mentioned it, the reason why Gildarts was never mentioned before was because the anime was supposed to end before this point so they left him out of the script when the topic of 'strongest Fairy Tail wizard' was brought up, or at least that is what I was told.
In the manga, gildarts is mentioned as that old geezer when laxus was talking excrements to the guild he said he was probably not gonna ba back in time to care.
Thing is Mangaka tend to do this Shanks/Gildarts thing a lot, mainly personality quirks, or jokes and such. Its because they are inspired by that work, and it isn't like America were it would be considered copyright infringement, its more like you giving respect to another person in your field. Like Luffy has the eating meat thing same as Goku, and many other main characters.
The fairy tail creator was actually a huge one piece fan. That's why there are so many similarities between certain characters in regards to personality and appearance.

I've come to the conclusion that Gildarts is actually an alternate dimensions version of Shanks. That or Shanks has a Devils Fruit that allows him to travel to alternate worlds in which in this particular one he goes by the name Gildarts.
haha, I think I read in an interview on Hiro Mashima that he took One Piece as his main inspiration for Fairytail that's why in the early Manga of Fairytail, everybody looks like they're straight from OP. Eventually, Hiro discovered his own style for FT in the succeeding series.
Yessir Gildarts is here. Yeah he’s super similar to Shanks lol. Totally different character and power tho. After a while he doesn’t even look like him anymore
I once changed a image of Shanks on TV Tropes to Gildarts and it was months before anyone noticed. They blocked my account after that. Also for saying that their page on the Revolutionary War was full of unsubstantiated British bias.
He's clearly not Shanks, as he has no scar on his face. The truth is that Gildarts is Shanks' lost twin brother, who've gone missing and ended up in Earthland after being swallowed by ANIMA!
