Barkley made it clear that he was not a role model, enough to say it in a commercial.

In this interview, KD didn't say "I'm not a leader." He said, "I don't feel like I want people to call me a leader, but I also don't want people to say that I'm not one either . . . because they don't see what's going on behind the scenes." I think that his point was he's not necessarily looking for people/the media to call him a leader (even if he is one behind the scenes). He may not need that validation from external sources. Also, at the same time, he doesn't want people to insult him or discredit what he probably is doing behind the scenes . . . leading by example (rather than vocal/charismatic leadership). I think he just wants people to not comment on it at all. That's definitely not realistic because people will always have something to say, but I think that is what he is getting at. Essentially, "if you don't know, don't say anything about it."

KD specified on twitter that he did not mean "I am not a leader" by his comments on the interview. He meant he isn't looking for praise, but he doesn't want people to come out and say that he isn't a leader either. Essentially, at least in his current role he DOES see himself as a leader but he is not looking for validation from others about it because he doesn't need it.

Its almost like media picks who they want to be "leaders". There was a time media said Kobe was selfish, now they all love him and place him in the top 5 for most. Iverson was a thug who didn't practice and now they want him on everything. These people aren't even in the locker room nor has any teammate ever said anything negative about him leading so where is it coming from? Say what you want about his decision but he's one of the best players in history and in the future, they'll be singing his praises once the hate created by media is flipped.

I think KD leads in his own way, by example. Sometimes a vocal leader is needed, and other times, a quiet leader is needed. Even if KD is not a vocal leader, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t lead.

KD leads by example of his passion and loyalty for the game. And off court how he keeps himself out of scandal and how he invests to set himself up for retirement. There are different ways to lead. The media has to pick at him to keep their “likes👍” and job.

There are two types of leaders (at least). In this scenario, sports, there are vocal leaders who motivate the people around them by not only saying things to motivate the other players but also by backing it up with their own play. Then you have the quiet leaders that respect their craft and brings and demands the best in themselves and expect the same of the ppl around them without being vocal. They “LEAD” by example. The teammates see how this leader is and it brings out the best in them. I think KD sees himself as a leader but not the A-typical leader. As someone who has been a member of different organizations and also been on various basketball teams, I will say that there are different types of leaders. There is the overall leader who is pretty much the leader in everything that's done, but then there are various levels of leaders throughout the organization. Like, someone may just be a leader in a specific area, but they may not be the vocal leader who leads everything.

The League is way more professional so its the job of the coaches to individually motivate players to do their job in a team. Nobody can question KD's work ethic !!

Derek Fisher was the leader in OKC, that is why they got him there because the lack of a leader. Kobe and Shaq were not the leader of their team (they said this themselves), Brian Shaw and Derek Fisher were the leaders. Leadership is someone you go to for guidance and direction, there is a level of respect in their words. Its not someone you have admiration for, that is just being a fan of someone.
