I have a Steam page up if you want to wishlist ShantyTown, it really helps! store.steampowered.com/app/2434600/ShantyTown/

Since you can stack houses I think you should also make stairs on the outside, also maybe houses on the second floor or above have the ability to have balconies

The new gameplay reminds me a bit of a relaxing puzzle game called "Cloud Gardens". It can be really addictive if done right.

I haven't actually played it, but I think I will for "research" :)

i already like this very much, i am going to watch the next devlog when it comes out Maybe a few ideas: day/night option free mode option (place whatever you want without a limit) Graffiti options (pick what graffiti you want)

Good suggestions! I have a day-night cycle already implemented, sandbox mode is planned but won't be added until all other mechanics are complete, and you can swap graffiti styles (and other objects' styles) with ctrl at the moment.

it could be cool to have the NPCs that move in while you build tell you what they want their neighbourhood to be like some might want walkable green, others may want sprawling big city. and depending on whos needs you follow attracts more npcs that want things in that direction. and over time you would need to cater to new demands, while not messing up the old ones

I don't know why this game looks so good. I don't really know how you do it but the art and lighting looks stylized and doesn't just look like the default hyper realistic unreal engine game

I would like to add some bohemian or ghibli types designs/exteriors from time to time. Some houses are full on industrialized while others add some cultural/traditional items outside of their homes to look zen ish and some add both to balance it out. You've seen that Japanese diorama with cultural Japanese things on the front side of their houses combined with modern and rustic bits like aircons and vent along with it. I want you to expand on that aspect. Add big decoration pots, colorful flags that were hung up during parties or festival, hanging plants on a pot, birdhouses, canopies/overhangs with greenery, stained glass, stack of tires, paint splatters on walls, those penny rides you see kids riding while they're waiting for their mama on the side of the grocery stores, dog houses and many more. If not now, maybe a good addition for future updates

Game looks absolutely beautiful and video is great as well. I learned a lot and took some "inspirations" for my next devlog video. hehe

Low-key reminds me of the relaxing feel of Equilinox (which is very much a compliment!). Keep up the good work :)

When looking at the tokyo block example, seems like adding crack and texture (like tile or metal) to your house wall would add more visual appeal to this game

only suggestion: make the numbers of all the objects visible again when hovering over that list. I prefer the visual item-stacks over the numbers for cluttering reasons, but think that the stacks may be annoying to count

I think the lack of outlines works really well

While i agree that the new 3 object mechanic seems much more freeing, i do also think the limitless nature of the previous system was pretty fun especially for building a more idealised block. Perhaps the previous mechanic could return as a gameplay mode alongside the 3 object mechanic

This looks really gorgeous. I'm already imagining using this to help visualize towns in my art.

First time viewer and yeah, it looks way better without the outlines. Having it on reminds me Autocad for some reason.

I love this, your videos are amazing and this is so fun to watch! Im from Spain and my english is rusty but I will do my best to give some feedback: As a Blender user who makes static renders, I think it's a shame that the lighting changes so much in game: maybe the player is building something beautiful and this abrupt change of light also changes all the color scheme of the diorama. I would suggest you that every level had unique lighting in order to better differentiate them and give them an unique feel. PD: You are as good as a game developer as a RU-vidr, this videos are so easy to understand and well made. Cheers from Barcelona!

Muchas gracias! I do plan to make some lighting changes, either a day-night cycle or let the player choose the time of day. I really need a lighting expert to help me with it because I'm actually pretty bad at lighting :)

I can tell that this the type of game if you make it so things compoundly combo together so as you go on your getting lots of combos it’ll be addictive. Also have you thought of combos sets like the game shows a picture of items together and if they recreate it you get bonus points or something

I think you should also apply the noise fade on the edge of the map for wires and any other objects that overflow. :D

So no more fail-state? Would it be more engaging to have a limit of objects to reach a certain point goal? You could then add milestones that reward players with "free" placements or a copy function to allow for creative freedom between point earning.
@kaingagame4351
@kaingagame4351 8 месяцев назад
Yep! There's a limit of each object depending on the map, and if you run out before reaching the points limit, you will have failed. I think it'll be near impossible to fail on the first maps but could be more challenging as the game goes on and you learn the rules.

Just wondering... Whats the biggest diff between this and Pile Up? Serious question
@kaingagame4351
@kaingagame4351 8 месяцев назад
Hey there! At first I was surprised to see Pile Up, and that it was also a city-block builder and was worried I was doing the same thing. But on closer inspection, I don't think they're actually very similar besides conceptually. In Pile Up, the goal is to provide services to the buildings you create, while in ShantyTown, it's more about placing objects based on adjacency bonuses. I'd say it's closer to a 3 dimensional "Islanders"

@@kaingagame4351 ok cool, I'm glad I asked so I could find the different gameplay elements of each. Thanks for the answer :)

Maybe people won't agree with me but 3 random objects I find a little too limiting, maybe 5 objects would be good? in any case the game is great and makes me want to play it! just like your first game.

Really great video but **PLEASE** don't put anime/movies/series content that may contain spoilers, even a little bit, now am going to be afraid of your future video just in case you show a scene that i didn't watch yet. Mr.Bean for the memes is fine, the rest, unless its a 90s movie or something, please don't do it anymore. Thanks!

Got it. I thought it was a cool quote about art, but fair enough it is late-season so could be spoily. I'll stick to the known memes and gifs :)

the game looks cool but the name is in bad taste in my opinion, poverty is not some cute theme for your game, it's a harsh reality many people live in every day
@kaingagame4351
@kaingagame4351 8 месяцев назад
I agree! It's a working title that should probably be replaced sooner rather than later. The current runner up is "Building Memory Lane" because when you complete maps, you've "remembered" them.
