Ranton added so much life to Bridges and AE and is really good at being entertaining. I never knew that families in China often sent their kids to Kung Fu schools as an alternative to one of the high-end schools if they couldn't afford it. I hope that despite the stuff concerning AE, he keeps coming back on. He's really interesting. He gave us even more insight, after Huey Li, into what China's really like when you're living there too.

Instead of the goal of the podcast being about building bridges with people you disagree with. Maybe the goal of the podcast should be about growing a large enough network of people in different fields that can agree with you to boost everyone's credibility when it comes to things like debunking missinformation which then forces those that disagree to come forward and debate. Also seems to fit the types of guests that have been on so far pretty well.

I am with you guys big time on the comedy discussion. I am a comedy enjoyer, I watch Kill Tony quite often, roasting people for all sorts of reasons is very funny if done in the right context and kept ultimately light-hearted. The point about people who joke about the same topic makes you start to question whether they’re jokes or not I think is something people should be more aware of. A smart comedian doesn’t go edgy very often, because at best the edginess loses its comedic value and at worst it goes too far. Does anyone ever say the best joke they’ve ever heard was racist, sexist, etc. because I don’t think that’s the case for me. The funniest jokes I can think of by comedians are not at the expense of any particular group, really.
@evcarr3008
@evcarr3008 21 час назад
Oh man, Kill Tony is the worst. It stinks of insecurity, nepotism, and unoriginality. It's fine you enjoy it but I reckon it'll become tiresome for you in not that long.
@brian1436
@brian1436 13 часов назад
I've seen a lot of people on Kill Tony who aren't funny but get carried by racial humor. Kill Tony very much feels like the type of crowd to carry that weight for them because it seems like they see themselves as the last people/comics who can make edgy jokes. It seems to get worse and worse every time I see a clip.
@sagenod440
@sagenod440 11 часов назад
I can see where yall are coming from, but on the flip side of this discussion I do think there are alot of people out there who are indeed overly sensitive. As I mentioned, roasting people can be very funny in the right context, as can every form of humor. Just like there is a middle ground for the comedians to strive for in their “edginess-ratio,” so too do the consumers of comedy need to remember that in the end, it is just about making people laugh and forget about their tribulations for a while. Hurtful jokes can be hurtful, no shit. But it’s up to both sides to handle the matter in a mature manner. A grown man whining and crying on the internet about a joke they don’t like is pathetic. The vast majority of these situations, I’d wager, is mostly due to oversensitivity on the part of the viewer. BUT that doesn’t downplay the situations where people are just insulted and not laughing. Just like Ranton said, you have the power to make any joke you want, but I have the power to find it stupid, unfunny, and therefore just bigoted. WHICH BTW, is how it largely works in the comedy world including on Kill Tony. If you get up there and make a racist/sexist joke and nobody laughs….oh boy you’re in for it. Comedy sort of polices itself in that manner, to a degree. Real comedians and enthusiasts don’t find shticky edgy humor particularly funny or interesting, at least not for long.
@brian1436
@brian1436 10 часов назад
@@sagenod440 I don't think it has to do with sensitivity. In fact I don't think people are as sensitive as most people like to claim. Saying people are just sensitive is just another way to avoid criticism imo. Kill Tony very much feels like a good amount of the comics there are trying to write edgy jokes because that is what people in that crowd want to hear. It feels like being funny comes second. If you compare Kill Tony to amateurs at Laugh Factory it's a night and day difference. I've seen a woman on Kill Tony look like she just got through doing meth and all she did was say a bunch of racist shit that didn't string together in any kind of way and was well received. She was damn near slurring like she was drunk but nobody cared because she did the thing. She said the taboos! I agree that comedy and comedians check itself but a lot of it goes unchecked. Let's not be naive. People thought western politics checks itself through freedom of speech and battle of ideas but look at the landscape now. Russian influenced talking points from a bunch of conservatards lying. And they have MASSIVE following. Kill Tony feels like the comedy version except of course not political or Russia influenced. Kill Tony is very much the crowd of "fuck cancel culture. Freedom of speech. It's just a joke. You are too sensitive. we can't tell these type of jokes anymore. We used to be able to... we are being it back. Etc." like how everyone loves to spin it without realizing they aren't part of a small niche group of freedom fighters. They are part of a disillusioned hoard. I'd much rather watch the laugh factory because those comedians actually put in effort towards their jokes they aren't just free balling edgy jokes that sound like they came from 4chan
@sagenod440
@sagenod440 9 часов назад
@@brian1436 Well we can agree to disagree on the degree to which people are being overly-sensitive (on the internet in particular) but as for the example on KT, I’m curious who you’re talking about exactly. I know there have been plenty of people to have blatantly racist sets that I don’t find funny, and I think that’s quite often the sentiment of the rest of the audience, which becomes a point of criticism which the judges can use to roast the comedian, especially when the jokes aren’t funny. I can’t really speak on the general audience in terms of their political views, but this is a show in Austin, Texas we’re talking about. It’s actually a very diverse city but there’s a lot of casual MAGA republicans in Texas. I’ve lived here my whole life and love the state but the amount of Trump followers is disconcerting. So yeah, KT leans right, obnoxiously at times. But I think people should remember not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. For edgy humor, you know which regular does it the most? Hans Kim, who made it his whole schtick and happens to be the worst-regarded regular to the point where many believe he should have been replaced by another comedian. While I certainly understand the cringe and frustrating aspect you’re referring to with regards to the right’s prevalent anti-woke sentiments and “freedom of speech; it’s just a joke” defense, to this point I would say not to necessarily let that fact define your overall perspective of the show if you so choose. If you’ve seen the show as much as I have, you’ll know that it remains light-hearted at the core. That not to say they don’t go overboard, but most of the time when a currently left-leaning centrist like me has the opinion that something is too racist, sexist, etc. the rest of the people at the show will feel the same way. Bad energy is bad energy, and that’s what makes the biggest difference in stand up comedy

Here in Canada littering is so bad, every major city is such a dump and every sidewalk has garbage strewn about. I’d be cool with a limited social credit system to fix that. One of the coolest things I remember about Japan was how clean everything was. Even high traffic parts of Tokyo like Shinjuku were miles ahead of the cleanest parts of Toronto, Vancouver or Halifax.
@garythecyclingnerd6219
@garythecyclingnerd6219 16 часов назад
You don’t need a social credit system or hyper extreme punishment for littering. If the penalty for littering was death, but virtually nobody was caught, nothing would change. We need a strong marketing/social campaign that hammers in social shame for littering. Such that if you throw trash into the street, people will call you out like you just pooped in the street. You also need to have frequency of enforcement upped. If the penalty for littering was $20, but there there was a 50% chance of getting caught, you’d see less littering than making a $2000 fine but 99% odds of not getting caught

Destiny seemed very curious to ask Ranton about China and Chinese politics, but Ranton isn't really in that world or has a deeper understanding of it. I would recommend he check out the Sinica podcast and the guests on that show. Maybe even have people like Kaiser Kuo, Jeremy Goldkorn, Peter Hessler etc on the show to ask them. It is strange that China is becoming the most mentioned foreign country in American politics, but no one knows anything about the country and its history or political system. The only voices I hear are the China hawks who want a war and that is insane and dangerous.

I think rewarding people for doing the right things is a good motivational tool now for people who do bad things shouldn't be punished and it effect your score because this gives institutions way more power than needed and we alredy have thing called laws and fines that is supposed to dencentivise people from doing bad things, now I again state the point in rewarding good behavior would indeed add you a net positive for communities. Like tax breaks rewards movies or live like a millionaire for a week or even a discount on plane tickets stuff like that I very much think that's a system we need, however they punishment aspect is quite terrifying and could be easily abused.

I remember places like 4chan used to be where you would go to say outlandish shit and pretend to be a bigoted moron. The problem is that after a while, actual bigoted morons who were too stupid to understand irony or sarcasm found it, and they just went "Oh, I've found my people." Also, that same swing to the right he was talking about in Germany is also happening in Scandinavian countries like Sweden for exactly the same reasons he mentioned. Unfortunately, it's happening all over Europe, and all over the world in general as a response to globalism, and like Ranton was saying, the left's general reluctance to talk about it definitely hasn't helped because it's allowing the absolute worst people to control the narrative.

I think we’re seeing the Democrat party correct on the issue. Partly because it’s the only policy that Republicans run on and part because it’s a very easy correction to earn votes. We can acknowledge the strain immigrants put onto communities and put policies into protecting the borders. I’m not certain what you do for truly xenophobic people because they’re incompatible with liberty. Regarding the 3rd trimester abortion topic, the reason so many people are hung up on it is because when Kamala, Walz or any other Democrat are asked about it, they just scream "womens rights" and repeat the same thing over and over. We see this during the Kamala vs Trump and Vance vs Walz debate, they are afraid of even commenting on 3rd trimester abortions, which make them look terrible. So, not a good example for the point you were trying to make.

2:29:06 This reminds me of a comment I saw on a video about representation, that a lot of Brits - even Brits who've never even seen a black person - think there's a shitload of black people in the UK, simply because there's a lot of black people in UK media due to how London-centric UK is (there's a lot of black people in London). With how much trans people and issues have been in the media the last several years (in large part, at least at first, because of the left), I wouldn't be surprised if that is the reason conservatives became so fixated on trans people. I think a lot of problems with the American right-wing are directly caused by progressives.
