I totally agree with Capt jack. A rotten transom is what killed my grandfather's cypress plywood boat. I didn't have the knowledge of how to fix it. I do wish I had it now for my grandsons! It had high sides. Thank you for all you are doing and showing!!!!

Capt. Joe, I wanted to thank you for these well done videos. Very timely information. I’m working on a Bateau Skiff sk14 that I purchased from the original builder. Plugging up the original open scupper (hated that)in the middle of the transom and reinforcing the transom as well. Thanks again.

A tip for mixing bondo Spread the bondo out on your mixing board in a thinner layer it will slow down the heat build up and give more work time on larger Amounts big mounds build up heat faster Especially on hot days Also invest in a 3” orbital DA sander , snap on , Cornwell, Matco, even harbor freight, sell them My favorite snap on, and Cornwell , they use Velcro paper and with 40 80 180 Even finer papers can be used….its such a time saver …if you try it you’ll love it

I swear I asked a question about this exact thing on one of your other videos a few hours before you uploaded this 😅 Also a suggestion, no doubt you’ve got zero time, but guys like me would for sure pay for a half hour phone consult or something to get advice on personal projects. When you mentioned Bondo...would you ever use it on a boat? It's my understanding that Bondo absorbs moisture and is a very bad choice for boats.

For the across the pond thing, Scotland here: Gelcoat = Gelcoat 1 inch = 25mm, 1/8th inch = 3mm (give or take, maybe a bawhair off but good enough up to round up depending on scale. Easy enough to figure out n/16ths, etc from there) We use metric mostly except roads because the government is just too tight to swap out the 1970s 70mph speed limit to fit modern braking systems 🤣

Not sure what your long-term plans for the channel are, but would also love to see you tackle some larger multi part series type repairs. The first thing that comes to mind would be a rotted transom replacement start to finish. Maybe going back in with Coosa. You have filled a huge void in for this type of content! I'm buying an old panga (~40yrs old) to refurbish that has pretty significant chipping to the gunwale. Would you say that fillers and putty as shown in this video are good to fill in all the chips around it? (boat is about 20'x6') Thank you!

You can use fillers on the deeper chips, then follow with two or three coats of gelcoat. You could also use a thickened gelcoat as a filler. Colloidal silica is usually the additive we use to thicken gelcoat.we have a 2 part video here on the channel using that method that you might find helpful.Thanks for watching!

can you recommend a supply company near your area for core foam material? Im in Biloxi Mississippi. Do you know if composite one will sell to individuals (non-commercial)? Also, does Plascore or Nidacell absorb resin into the cells when vacuum bagging? Thanks

You might try Advanced Plastics in Elberta Alabama. We don't do any vacuum bagging in our shop, but have had good success with corecell and divinicell products in the past. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I have a question about your comment on the Bondo filler. Do you feel it's just inferior say binding, sanding, or is there another reason? Reason why I ask is I usually just buy whatever is cheap and available but now we do have a new Napa in town. Thanks for the video.

It's just not considered the best product for boat work because it could possibly absorb moisture. The higher end products have more moisture resistance overall. It doesn't mean it can't be used on smaller, less critical projects. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

I didn't know that or I've forgotten over the years. I learned automotive body work from my dad 40 years ago but as you know there's major differences between that and marine. He just showed me how to use it and when not to use it. He metal finished a lot of his work back then and now there are so many products it's hard to remember all the nuances. I appreciate the reply and I'll remember that. I'm building a 55 Chevy 2 door right now. I'm almost finished installing a new one piece floor and I'm metal finishing the entire car. Not important, but good to know. The thing you refer to as a Dremmel Tool is actually called a Rotary Tool. It is made by a multitude of manufacturers including DREMMEL Pty Ltd who on their own manufacture as many tools as Hitachi, Bosch, DeWald, Ryobi and all of them. To refer to a Bosch Tool would be meaningless.

I really been enjoying the channel! I also really like your practical approach to projects: spend the time to make things look perfect when they are visible and it makes sense, but for other things, good enough is good enough. Along those lines, I wanted to run a question by you, there's a lot of division out there about whether it makes sense to use products like Inject-a-Deck or other expandable foams for soft deck repair, or whether the only right way to do it is to completely removed the top sheet and replace the old core. Curious what your thoughts would be. Seems like folks that have used the expandable foam have had decent results, but others would never dare even try it. Thanks!

Glad you are enjoying the videos! We have always cut out and replaced bad or soft floors. There is almost always rot in other areas, like the stringers as well. But to be fair I have never tried the inject a deck materials. It seems like they could buy you some time. It might work, but I feel better about replacement. Just my opinion for what it's worth. Have question on put in transom? Getting ready to put in new with marine plywood is it ok to use thickened polyester resin tho put it in with. Or should I put in fiberglass like 1708 and then put it in.

When we put a wood transom in with polyester resin, we usually put 2 or 3 layers of 1 Oz csm that has been wet out very thoroughly. We then clamp or wedge it in place. You have to work fast, and have everything planned out. We are uploading a video right now that discusses bonding in plywood. It should be up in a few hours. Sure! Aluminum would work. I just don't prefer porous materials like plywood or cardboard if possible. Those materials could leach some of the solvents out of your putties and fillers and change their consistency. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Hey Captain Joe. Love your work. Question: can you add chopped strand fibers to the Napa Prolite and come out with Prostrand? Would it be just as strong?

You should be able to add some glass fibers to prolight, but I don't think it would be as strong or consistent as prostrand. You could always do some tests to see. I have been using a different filler with glass in it recently. It is easier to get than the Napa brands sometimes. I will be using it in some upcoming videos. Seeing these jobs done in real time without edits is so refreshing compared to other channels that edit it down to 8 minutes A while back I saw you in the comments discussing those WM gelcoat repair kits. Would LOVE a professional tutorial on those as well. Picked one up last weekend to tackle a minor repair and I’m a bit intimidated by it.

I have been doing body work a long time and you are right sand the filler with 40 as soon as you can ,do not let it dry completely it will take forever, i think if you sanded it sooner it would have been easier,nobody knows this except me and you

Have you done any transom rebuild? I have a 97 Four Winns Vista 238 and just found out transom was heated by the exhaust and got some water damage on the lower portion. Thinking about doing it myself but wanted some pro tip and out of all videos I watch you seem to be the best at this. Thanks for all that you do. You have empowered me to do a lot.

Oh Heck Yes ! My puddle of water is where the White River flows into the Wabash River here in SW Indiana and the boat I'm going to speak of has done flowed out to sea a long a go. I rescued a 12' fiberglass V Bow that looked like it had been dropped off a tall building that flattened it out and cupped the bottom. Armed with a roll of fiberglass mesh from a local manufacturing company that made tanks for various farm needs. Before I cooked up a plan to bring this Ole Girls back to her former figure some of our resident ducks and geese made Kitty Hair out of my roll of repair material for nesting. Luckily it saved the locally made boat designed for duck hunting called a "Teal Craft". The cupped bottom made it virtually tip proof and could glide effortlessly over lilly pads into the cattails for hunting. We fished her all summer and donated her back to the Rod & Gun Club for hunting season. No ducks was harmed in telling this story...o~`o lol

I appreciate your mentioning double gloving, and you may mention this in the video later, BUT, do you have a tip to avoiding dripping sweat from inside your gloves when working a long stretch and it’s hot and your hand moving certain ways, you’ll leave notable amounts of sweat on fresh epoxied (or coated) surfaces. What do you do to avoid that happening? Or does it not cause problems?🤔

I really love what u guys are doing on the channel. Maybe some maintenance things for boat owners like bellows replacing and water pump changing or whatever it might be on ur boat. Lol. Just a suggestion. But i would def enjoy like the other comments had mentioned some actual transom demo and completely redoing and installing new stringers and flooring in a boat would be very helpful considering thats what im tackling now in my boat 😅😅😅.
