No cap, I've learned to play Mahjong in 2 weeks by playing Yakuza 0 and Kiwami because of the achievements and actually grew to like the Mahjong.

I actually wanted to learn just to get all the achievements in Yakuza 8, then grown addicted to playing once it all clicked. It took awhile 😅😅

I'm trying to complete Yakuza 0 in 2020 thank you for making this video because I had no idea what was happening when I had to sit at the Mahjong table.

this is the level of tutorial i have been looking for. a lot of people jump from explaining the basic rules to explaining advanced stuff full of japanese words that they don't define. what i needed was just a basic overview of what to look for in a hand, and this video did a great job

Thank you for this! As a budding Mahjong lover, you made the basics incredibly easy to understand! I started my journey not long ago when I started playing the Yakuza series. So addicting once it all clicks.

This is helpful. Gonna watch the other videos, too. I've started playing Riichi Mahjong in 51 Worldwide Classics and right now I'm mostly relying on luck, trying to figure out tactics.

8:15 I want luck like that. A lot of times I'm waiting for one tile... and proceed to lose. It's the most frustrating when I have a shanpon. Thank you for these vids. I'm thoroughly enjoying the game.

Thanks for the teach. Always wanted to learn this. I must say that this game seems to have influenced the design of another 2p game ive played and really enjoyed called Schotten Totten. You might really enjoy it as well if your into Riichi. Schotten Totten is not the same game but has some similarities.

Hi, thanks for creating this guide. I got a bit confused at the end of this video. Based on the rules you explained. 6,7,8 all of spades corresponds to mahjong straight . While 9 of spaces, 9 of clubs is just two single tiles, both of which are still looking for their identical partner to form a pair. So the 5 cards you showed does not form a 5 card mahjong hand (if such a thing existed). Am I wrong?
@LightGrunty
@LightGrunty Год назад
The idea was that you could use two decks of cards as a stand in for mahjong tiles in a very simple way. But since there are four of each mahjong tile, you would consider all of the black 9s (both 9 of spades and 9 of clubs) as the same mahjong tile for the purposes of this exercise.

Using a deck of cards is actually a great idea. Did you come up with that yourself? Having multiple waits in a big single suit hand is just the hardest thing for me, idk how people see the waits so easily!
@LightGrunty
@LightGrunty 6 лет назад
I can't really say that I came up with the idea to use playing cards, since rummy exists, ha ha. Understanding the shape of a single-suit hand can be very difficult; even pros mess it up sometimes. It just takes practice.

The only question I still have is: Sometimes I have 4 Sets and one extra for the pair (or 3 sets, one pair and one "set" where only one piece is missing) in my hand / already open but I dont win with the draw of the final piece. Why is this happening?
@LightGrunty
@LightGrunty 3 года назад
In riichi mahjong, you need two things to win: a hand with a completed winning shape and a yaku. It sounds like you've got a complete hand without a yaku. Later videos in this series go through the various yaku, so you could check those out to see how to make sure you have a yaku with your hand.

What’s the diff between this mahjong and other types
@LightGrunty
@LightGrunty 3 года назад
Most forms of mahjong have the same fundamental rules, including calling tiles and building a complete hand with four sets and a pair. The main differences come with how hands are scored, which varies greatly based on the variant. Riichi mahjong also has the unique furiten rule which allows for strategic defensive play.

How do I know what tiles to discard
@LightGrunty
@LightGrunty 3 года назад
Normally you would just discard isolated tiles, starting with honor tiles and tiles on the ends (1s and 9s). Then as your hand starts to come together, you should be able to figure out which tiles are less useful for you based on which tiles you need to complete sequences or triplets. It's okay if it's difficult at first; you'll understand as you practice.
