@MaxGrant Max, I was watching Abom (Adom Booth) on his channel when he got his shaper, and he was having the same taper problem. He was able to rectify the condition by taking out the backlash in the down feed axis prior to locking it down. He found that when he used the auto downfeed the backlash was causing the tool to dig in more than what the auto feed was doing. So when setting his tool height on the down feed axis he would go down beyond where he wanted it to be, then back it back up to where he wanted it thus eliminating the down feed backlash, then setting the locking screw tight, eliminated the unwanted random down feed when using the auto down feed. Thanks for doing the project on the shaper. I quit using my Rode mic because it seems to want to fight the GoPro's external mic and creates some weird background noise. I am using an older GoPro so it does not have any settings that let you adjust that issue.
You would think this day & age , they would make reliable electronic stuff . A bit like computers at work , when they run well the IT dept stuff around with them just to justify their own existence ! 👍
You can never fail to attract viewers with a shaper video. I have a small South Bend 7".. as I was watching the video i noticed that the clapper raised the cutting tool just before it got to the work piece. If have time in a future shaper video, could you spend time showing how the lifting mechanism works?. KOKO!

Amazing that that piece of over engineering was to allow the seat to be adjusted for and aft. Good chance it was going to get blown to smitherines on its first outing. There is enough steel there to build a car (especially a Chinese one) these days. It turned out beautifully. Jeff.
I still remember watching some slow-motion close-ups of shaper machining we saw as apprentices 50 years ago. The plastic deformation around the cutting edge was clearly visible - great learning aid!

That was a dead punt on that rough cut. I love the way you can run the shaper on auto and go and do "something else". And that "something else" consists of sitting a chair watching it. Great stuff and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Max, Great job. I found on my shaper, that if I keep the stroke overhang to a minimum at the rear, the ram won't be quite up to speed when the tool hits the cut. It makes life a little easier for carbide....Dave

The slow motion capture are fun to watch as action, shaper in motion. The review of tool shape, tool type was on target for my needs as to add to tool job type in my shop *ahead as real projects in near future.. Thank you Max. I hope the holiday finds cheer and family as gathered about. M.
G'day Max. The shaper might have a few problems, but the operator seems to be right on the Ball. 😅 There appears to be lots of chips coming off with ease whether a light or slightly heavier cut I was waiting for the part to shoot forward when held by 5mm. 😂😂 The slide turned out really well, & with it working with the adjuster on it . It's amazing how much different tooling you need to accomplish different projects. Max you have done really well, Overall a Great Tutorial Video

Good one Max, Perfect job for the shaper.. No auto down feed on my little shaper, but I have found keeping the gib very snug on the down feed makes a huge difference. Merry Christmas to you and family... I'm guessing Santa changes to Bermuda shorts for the Aussie fly-over 😎😎
Image stabilization is ironically causing your phones wiggle probably. It's just trying to sync with the moving ram as if it was the stable thing and the world is in motion. Which it is of course but not from our perspective...
When you were on about the machine being in Spanish or Brazilian in the first video the GPM on the dial could be either Giro's (turns) or Golpes(hits) per minute, I am English but lived here in Spain for over 30 years and nothing else coms to mind re GPM. If you need anything translated to Spanish let me know, Google translate does not too bad but where it lack very much in context and sometimes the translation is stupid and nothing to do with things. This time the flip up was early, I'm wondering if it has to do with the stroke, no doubt I'll find out at the end how it works, very interesting stuff.
One of the best shaper videos i've seen Max cheers, a nice part done. Im only DIYer so times not an issue for me. But what was you total time on that part? If your happy to share ofcourse. Those more modern shapers are interesting.
I did not keep any track of time as when filming it multiplies the time quite a lot . I quoted the job to be done in the milling machine & that would have taken a fraction of the time the shaper took , but i thought it would make good shaper content ! Cheers 👍
When you _have to cut deeper than_ the vise jaws, what are your *thoughts on mounting the* work between sacrificial pieces of aluminum and then keep going with the cut? _You save the vise and don't_ have to re-set up the part. I seen another youtube *do that but he wasn't* using a shaper either.
Carbide inserts aren't sharp edged. Learned from a machinist to diamond grind to a razor edge & they work better than high speed, even in deep cuts. He's taught me a great deal over the years & I'm 79 now.
I don't know if this has been brought up below but on the edge "plunge" cuts could you have used a sacrificial material in between the project and the jaws.
Hi Max, wonder if a spring loaded tool holder will prevent the tool being pulled into the work caused by the backlash. Rustinox uses one on his shaper. As you are acutely aware its virtually impossible to have to have zero backlash A neutral rake would work but adds load to the machine which is also undesirable. I think you have found the flaw in shaper design. Adam has the same problem
