NOTE FROM TED: Research around nuclear fusion energy remains an ongoing field of study. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
The Sun and the stars in the universe are powered by Fusion Energy. Could fusion become a practical energy source on Earth? How close are we to a fundamental breakthrough? What are the benefits and challenges? Are we able to scale in time to combat global warming? Dr. Kjetil Skaugset holds a PhD degree in Marine Structures/Hydrodynamics/Cybernetics from Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), 2003. He has worked as a postdoc at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT.
Since starting in Statoil/Equinor 2005, he has had various leadership and professional roles ranging from research and development, field development, venture and business development, project- and line management.
Skaugset has also held the corporate technical authority position as chief researcher in Equinor for 7 years. He has been heading up Fusion Energy in Equinor for more than 4 years.
Kjetil is a corporate senior advisor in Equinor across value chains. In addition, he is an adjunct professor at NTNU in Trondheim. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The climate crises is driven by natural methane "leakages" for which a tech solution is available and profitable. CO2 is at near all time historical lows, (ask a geologist) nearer to catastrophe levels; the balance and proportion of CO2 shall be restored naturally by planting more trees, ie oxygen levels are significantly lower than 100 years ago. Fusion tech, inferred in the 1880s, will be grid-less. The fusion energy utility implications/ramifications are to be the result of endless free decentralized energy.
