@@democratsmakeyoupoorerandr2335 agree, but this tower is market rate w/ I think about 1/4 affordable housing (not section 8), so prospective tenants will still have to pay monthly just reduced from market-rate pricing. The rest will be as expensive as anywhere else in the area (which is quite high). None of these units are free at all.

I live right there. 20% will be affordable housing that means 80% will be dumb high. They are going to charge anywhere from $2 thousand. to $3 thousand a month, prices are RIDICULOUS around here which is why many people are moving out.

@@Robbover that's rude and presumptuous of you! He is speaking as a resident of Newark so he knows more about it than you. He's also correct. The rents here in Newark are disproportionately high and getting higher because of all the new luxury developments. $2000 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment is not affordable. I'm sure it is for people working in NYC but for Newark residents, it's not.

Maybe the ones with no skill set and education that never invested in themselves will cry and make excuses, but those of us who sacrificed not fitting in, worked two jobs while in Rutgers-NJIT. This is great news and might make me ponder of moving to Newark from NYC. You are responsible for your success the government can’t give you a luxury life style nor should Shaq.
I read a quote about what he said to one of his children, when his child referred to the fact that they were rich. He told his son, no I'm rich. You need to learn to work hard. Paraphrased but the message was perfect and he did work hard and he loves his mama. Doesn't get much better than that

Rent is probably gonna be 1800 for a 1 bedroom. It’s amazing what hes making the city look good however if the people in the city can’t afford to live there whats the point. The point is to get the people that he grew up with living here out of here. SMH!

I love to see when they give back...so many famous people, celebrities, entertainers hail from Newark, NJ (not gonna name names) and don't give back to their community/hometown. Growing up in the 80s and 90s in the neighboring town, Newark was not the city you wanted to hanging around. The last 15 to 20 years I've had the pleasure of watching the rebirth of Newark and it just keeps getting better and better. I would love to see more Newark natives give back to the city the way Shaq is doing ❤

What does it mean 20 percent will be affordable? The rest are gonna be mad high then meaning Barely any living places for people in the area great love you guys, making housing for the rich, renting is becoming for the rich now so buying a home is impossible, we are gonna all be on the streets soon

GREAT, many that could give back to Newark do not. Hope the glass corners of Shaq tower have bird safe glass or film, as I've been watching it go up daily. Some of the newer & older glass buildings like Pru Tower, PSE&G are the cause of many thousands of birds demise. Architects know the harm, but either do not care or figure to save money and if want to see a fancy bird go to country ( I've rescued Hummingbirds to Falcons in Newark due to building Glass). When the migrating birds hit the glass skyscrapers or fall to the cement, most do not survive. A friend & I rescue songbirds . A recent youtube video shows us in Newark NJ, the video is named ( Volunteers give migrating birds injured in N.J’s biggest city a second chance )' The Raptor Trust made a older video when we first started named ( Window Strikes in the Business District ) of us picking up injured Warblers.
