Gotta say, it’s amazing what the 2 consoles can be compared to between the PlayStation and neo geo seeing how surprisingly different they look. Put out kind of a strange vibe to how they look in comparison between a Cartridge game and in a compact CD disc of the PlayStation.
It has recently been proved that the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive with appropriate cart size and programming skills could produce very similar results.... And I bet that with the 32X they would have been on par.
RAM was the issue for the PS1. Remember it's a CD based system so everything had to be loaded into RAM and the PS1 only had 1MB of VRAM to store all the sprites, frames of animations and backgrounds. Same with the Saturn. That's why the RAM expansion basically created perfect ports except for the load times. It's also why CD systems could never do Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat right until the Dreamcast. Not enough RAM to hold all the characters data, sprites and animations.
@@locked01No. Sure, the Mega Drive and Neo had the same CPU, the rest of the hardware was drastically different. The Neo Geos graphics and sound hardware was leagues ahead of the Mega Drives. Especially in relation to colors, amount of sprites and the fact it can do scaling. Maybe with the Mega CD and unlimited RAM it could do a perfect port but not the base console.
I must be honest, a lot of the PS1 ports of Neo-Geo games are about 92% perfect. I didn’t know SNK poured so much into making these ports for Sony’s original console gaming machine.
Yea you can see in some fighting game backgrounds some animations are missing entirely or they made a hud smaller which doesn’t make it pop as much. I’m more impressed by not only how the Neo Geo performed but was still churning out games into the late 90’s
@@mattkennedy6115 Even beyond the late 90's. The last officially released game was Samurai Shodown V Special in 2004. Great last game to end 14 years of supportt.
It's quite impressive what a cartridge could do. Some of those Neo Geo games clearly surpassed their Playstation counterparts. Especially Viewpoint which looked and sounded great. The Neo Geo versions of Double Dragon, King of Fighters 95, and Gowcaizer had more background details and animations. Also the smoke in the vents from Samurai Shodown III (Labeled Real Bout Fatal Fury in chapters) looks a lot better.
Cartridge itself isn't what's impressive. It's that it's a 1990 Cartridge system vs a 1995 CD system. Because N64 1996 Cartridge vs PS1 , games on both systems are generally better on N64.
Well, from a technical POV, CDs are supposedly more powerful because they have more storage space: however, as you correctly said, N64 was better than PS1 (even tho cartridges have less storage space)
The PlayStation can have some impressive 2D graphics when put into the right developers hands ✋ hehe. Part of the reason I think the PlayStation is the best console ever.
The Neo Geo seems to be a little better in every game, especially If you consider the less animation frames and differences in the coloration of some PS ports, but it's good and less expensive substitute. Don't forget to mention the PS' loading times as well. Nothing beats the original 🤷🏻♂️
@@shaggymcdaniel3216you meant SNK vs Capcom I guess. Indeed, the old school MKs (MK1-UMK3) on Neo Geo would be interesting to see. They would be the best versions, without loading times but with slightly lower resolution (320x224).
The PS1 is much more powerful. The problem was about storage and Ram. The NEO GEO can access a cartridge far faster and use it as instant ROM. (The Nego Geo CD had the same problem).
Viewpoint at the start makes a case for how an upgrade can make a game worse. Its much harder to tell what is going on with those shiny new graphics vs the pure pixel art. Its kind of incredible to see that some of the NEO GEO games actually would be considered better gameplay wise. A lot of the PSN1 stuff looks CLEANER, but the Neo stuff actually seems to move better. You can see the better color pallet and smoother art with no jaggies but the NEO stuff still moves better and you can see it.
You're omitting a key aspect from the comparison: loading times😅 for me, it really broke the rhythm of games like KOF97. And really is incredible how NeoGeo games could use so much memory at any given time, for comparisons, is like having just a 16 mbit game each single PSX load, other games, like Metal Gear Solid streamed fixed amounts of data, and kept the console fed, but at any given time, PSX could only hold 16mbit, for Neo Geo ports, they simply were too big
@DEN-pj1ob totally awful, ncd had a 1x speed CD drive and had to fill 56mbit of memory available. Even the upgraded ncd with a 2x drive had longer times because of that, total madness, but made the games far more affordable
Colocaram special no nome e adicionaram a cham cham .
This is an interesting fight because while the Playstation is more powerful than the AES it was not built to display sprites. This means it uses polygons for all of its graphics and because of this the AES smokes it in 2d games. Which of course speaks to how incredible the AES is. It is technically...the AES is 6 years older than the Playstation but the MVS has 7 years on it. The AES and MVS are identical minus the carts. You can play MVS games on an AES with a pass-through. Oh and Viewpoint on the Playstation was terrible. What were they thinking?
@@humansrants1694 The Playstation 1 could not produce sprites. Everything you see is made out of polygons. I know it sounds nuts but it's true. Here's how sprite based games were produced on it.. Basically the Playstation had to render two flat polygons as a plane and a texture stuck to them in order to fake a sprite. The textures were really sharp and in low resolution which made them look like sprites. The problem was while the PS1 could throw a ton of textures out it could not keep up with specialized sprite based hardware like the AES. Bonus- Today's consoles don't really have any real sprite based capabilities either. What they do is render everything in 3D planes. Kind of cool huh?
Best ports: RBFFS, KOF 97-98-99, Last Blade, Metal Slug X, Samurai Showdown 1-2 Worst: Metal Slug (horrible loading ingame), Samurai Slowdown 3, Gowkaizer All others OK.
I would like a deeper comparison. I can't see much difference in colours and I am aware (and, in 1996, I was also annoyed by) of the loading times. But, overall, I had a great time with the PS1 version of those games. Besides tbe lack of some animation frames, arcades were still a thing but I was was playing Tekken 3 and KOF97 (with CD quality soundtrack) and Metal Slug at home with my buddies, whilst someone else was still spending quarters on those but not only (although I can justify Daytona USA, basically never matched....).
OK, now we need all the shared games between the Neo Geo and the Sega Saturn, which usually is more faithful to the original games or runs them better than the PS1.
There are yes, Double Dragon was released on PS1 in the USA and worldwide, it was very common to find. Samurai 1 and 2 on PS1 were only released in Japan on a single CD called "Samurai Spirits: Fencing Pack".
@@kimsnk To falando de maneira casual.
