SHARED TERRITORY - Borderlands is an exploration of a landscape that has largely been misunderstood through the lens of distant media and political narratives. This is the story of the Camino del Diablo, a historic route connecting the border town of Sonoyta, Mexico and Yuma, Arizona.
This film wouldn’t have been possible without the people who were willing the share their time and stories. We encourage everyone who watched this film to continue the journey into the Sonoran Desert. And there’s no better way to start than through the work of these voices. Learn more about the area here: blog.pearlizum...

I wish every single supporter of this wall would come and drive the border with me. I have been documenting the ecocide and human rights issues for the last 7 months (I was only supposed to be here for 2 weeks.) Thank you for this excellent documentary.

Excellent presentation. I rode it in 2017 and it was wonderfully remote, hate to think of how much the wall building has changed it.

Howdy Mike! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. I would love to hear more about your transit in 2017. The construction of the wall closed the entire section from Sonoyta, so we couldn't depart from Mexico. I'm guessing it's much different than the Camino you experienced. Access to the border wall from the Yuma and Ajo side required building out the road into a much more formal affair. The middle section probably remains similar to your experience. When we were close to campsite 2, it would be pretty common to see semi trucks, massive earth movers, etc. The last night on the Camino we were passed by a fleet of about 25 semis. The reports we heard speaking with the border patrol was that the wall costs between 20-30 million dollars per mile. Crazy number!

Really nice! Glad you got to experience the Camino and Sonoran Desert at a slower pace (vs motorized transport). Bill is a very dear friend of mine and an amazing person (a treasure). My heart and siul are deeply connected to the Sonoran Desert and I was fortunate to have worked and camped year 'round (often alone) in the Growler Valley for 20 days/month for 2.5 yrs in the early 90s...Pre wall, very little Camino activity, I encountered less than 10 people during that time. Take care and thanks again for getting the message out about how special the Sonoran Desert and it's peoples are.

The Sonoran Desert, one of the most beautiful deserts you will ever see. Beautiful and potentially dangerous. I grew up in it. I spent some time in Organ Pipe NM surveying small mammals for undergraduate studies.
