Shark at Slapton Sands Devon! Went to the beach for a barbecue on the 12th of May and saw a shark. We are thinking that it is most likely a young Basking Shark, the dorsal fin and the tail fin seemed to be approximately 6-8 feet apart.
certainly a Basker - great to see one so close to shore! this species is listed as Endangered in the Northeast Atlantic due to overexploitation throughout the 20th century -so seeing one like this is a real privilege! John Richardson Conservation Officer - The Shark Trust
He's been coming there for years, I remember swimming out to take a closer look and it is indeed a basking shark. They are very shy and won't let you get too close. It's possible it's not the same one but it was swimming exactly the same path as this one the last time I saw it.
Great! We saw exactly the same thing last week at Slapton Sands last week. Thought it was a snorkeler at first - I was in an inflatable kayak with my nephew. Was excited and nervous!
take it from an ex Cornish fisherman this a basking shark easily identified by the shape of the dorsal fin, harmless to humans and a regular visitor to our shores, good capture sir well done
It could be a basking shark, or a blue shark that has chased mackeral in shore, it could be a gigantic spotty dogfish or its just a 8 ft long mackerel haha
Bloody hell!.. If you are swimming in the sea and a 14 to 16 foot shark swims by you and you don't know one species of shark from another you are going to pee yourself!.. Being in the sea is the best place to do it I guess?.. 🤣🤣.. 👍
no. for future reference, last time I checked (this may have been disproven?) peeing in the sea is actually a bad idea if you're in a part of the world where there are sharks that might try and eat you.
