NRL.com spoke with Rugby League legend Cliff Watson and asked him what his memories were of the 1973 Grand Final between the Manly Sea Eagles and the Cronulla Sharks
Cliff came to our practice when I was a young lad. I delivered the newspaper to him on a daily basis. He was a great guy for showing up and spending time with us and my mates couldn't believe I got him to show up. Quality individual indeed.
I loved watching Cliff when he played in Australia. He was a fFerocious defender who never took a backward step. When he gave an opposing player the big "don't argue", they got the message loud and clear. I particularly remember him looking after his little mate Tommy Bishop. Cheeky Tommy would give a big opposing forward the wind up and then run behind Cliffy.
One very tough cookie. I watched him play in the legendary Brisbane Test in 1970 when he sorted out the Australian forwards in his trademark style. The Kangaroos actually won that game with Graham Langlands converting the full time try with couple of hundred kids running all over the field. The Poms went on to win the series with two great games played in Sydney.
