The Sharp GF-777 WINS! I remember when these beauties where out. Sharp boomboxes where very expensive and where sold by quality HI-FI stores. And give out top quality sound w/o distortion. The Conion C-100F was available at any Flea Market.
Sharp radios were always loud but along came the cheaper hitachi 3d superwoofer and then you had quality bass to the mix. I used to spend so much money on the batteries back then but it's good to look back at these boomboxes with all the nostalgia associated with them.
I owned one of the Conions up until December. Of 2017. One of the most heartbreaking things I've ever done is sell it. I got sick and had to stop working and needed money to pay rent.
As of today (01-14-2021) a minty 777 starts for around $700, a Minty Conion c-100F about $2,500. there is a Conion C-100FF (double F) that has a more powerful amp producing better sounds., those are eve more rare! Great collection!
Ah good healthy debate, like it :-) It would have been great to have done these sound comparisons when the boxes were both new. The Sharp has been serviced with two replacement speakers, where as the Conion has had no work done to it, so probably a bit hard to truly compare, I just love em both!
Tough question! Overall the Conion had much more room to go on the bass, treble and overall volume dials. To get the Sharp to a similar level the bass, treble and volume controls were all dialed higher than on the Conion. The Conion has bigger speakers and so I'd say it wins in the bass and volume departments, and also the visual area with those mad LED's that catch your eye! Both awesome boxes and both great sound and both very LOUD!
I miss my old school JVC Boom box, but I used to have that Sharp and it was pretty cool. Lost a few boxes running round streets back in the day. New JVC's sound pretty cool, although that analog JVC sound is still the best and has the best bass. Nice to see two real boom boxes that still pump nice and hard.
Hi there, from memory just a splitter cable - headphone jack at one end and RCA at the other end (that plugged into one of the auxiliary inputs on the back of the boombox - line in I think)
@@2hughesy Really nice .... so iconic looking .... These never show here .... and I cant imagine how high they would be in price. The most boombox you can get is an RC-M70, the 777 showed once and then ... a 9696. Also a JVC diablo showed one at a ridiculous price. The M70 is nice Machine, but far from the C100F I think. I got a couple of cobras ... hey ... they deserve some love too, but too modern to my taste.
GF777: 30hz-18khz C100F: 40hz-14khz Which is why I prefer GF777 plus separate left and right record level knobs like on decent cassette decks as well as super noise reduction system which is like dolby nr.
Well in flea markets you can find other treasures, there's something for everyone Like a vintage newspaper that can cost 10 cents and be worth 1000s The CONION C-100F is a rare find in a flea market
i had the Conion back in '84.. bought it off a truck open to the public along a busy road in tampa, fla. paid only $250 for it. dealers would set up stands along the roads selling all kinds of boomboxes back then.
old 1980s ghettoblasters was designed to be able to patched into *ANYTHING* even todays I-pods, an adapter cable from the I-pods output is plugged into the ghettoblaster AUX (auxilary) INPUT RCA JACK...some boomboxes use a small headphone jack port for the microphone in instead of the common RCA jacks
I was able to get my hands on a Sharp GF-767 mint condition. It sat some where in someones closet for over 30 years forgotten. Not a scratch on it. They sold it to me for 585 from ebay. The GF777 is listed on ebay fore as high as 2699.I think I made out on a good deal.
GF777 is better than GF767 due to separate record levels left and right plus SNRS which is sort of like dolby for less noise and dual VU meters. But GF767 is still good as well.
Wow so that some pretty creative adjustments then you made - I think if I tried the same thing myself I'd probably mess it up well and truly, but the guy who fixed my Sharp might be able to give it a go - thanks for the tip!
@Clairtone: I did agree that the Connion was better. The reason why I perceived the m70 as better than a sharp777 was that it is so clear and I have not found or herd anything better in this size or smaller boom box. Any suggestions? As for the m90 while it sounded the most clear to me, I also have to agree now that the Connion is louder and possibly nicer depending on what you value and as a colector I can see why this Connion box is very desirsable and definitely up there as one of the best.
Hey bro i realy realy want to buy both of them, but i don't have any idea how to get them at this generation, now i saw them in you tube, so i really really like them, so please send me these tapes both of them i want to buy
I had both and with all the controversy today those radio's made it's way to collectors ... That means that if you want either one you'll have to search good to save on the purchase . The cannon is still a badass getto blaster and I'm still looking for one at a good price
conclussion from my above post, note lot of the later model boomboxes having the single cassette deck or having dual cassette decks having a CD player *LEFT OUT THE AUX RCA INPUTS* some of these models wont have no microphone jack input to work with-the CD is input source, you are looking for like 1985 timeline equipment
they sound pretty similar, could even say almost exaclty the same. But I don't have analytic speaker or headphones at the moment to detect the difference much.
I like the lights on the Conion, and how do keep my meter lights on? My gf-777 only has meter lights if I HOLD DOWN the "batt test button" and balance knob doesn't switch, all speakers stay on no matter where knob is. Anyone?
Indeed it would be great to have a JVC RM90 - they are far and few between here in Australia though so I think I'm lucky to start with these 2, but rest I look at them all on ebay as they come up in the US!
Hi mate glad you like the music and the boxes! Unfortunately all my stuff is in storage at the moment and will one for the next few months, maybe hit me up later in the year and see what I can do in terms of copying the tape for you (assuming you actually want a tape to play?)
HMMM maybe I should get out all of my big box's and do a comparison but you cannot hear the difference because of the way the sound is recorded into the video camera and i dont have a defeated alc, or alc sound dis-abled video camera yet but am working on finding one that fit's me....
@2HUGHESY. The new speaks will need to be powered up more than the older ones I've changed mine and it sounds nice but not like it would when I had then old ones in but I have both boxes and the Conion does sound louder the the sharp
@ubzm555 Yeah the Conion pumps and has a lot more headroom / way to go one the volume levels. The Sharp seems to stay a bit tighter though with the bass. Love em both tho !
ADDITIONAL BOOMBOX REPAIR NOTE : CONTROLS WITH STATIC electrical contact cleaner spray can help, the spray type with a straw to get into that hard to get area
Yeah depends what you want to play through it, if the box is good and you're sure the sound is good and you just want to play your iPhone or something through an aux input then all good. If you want to play tapes then obviously you could be up for some money and time to get that fixed which could add a few extra hundred potentially
As for back in the day, well I was only 10 when these babies came out so am living out a lost childhood opportunity now :-) I think the Conion became famous through the classic Breakdance movie scene, but the Sharp is highly regarded also from various album covers.
Have you seen the LASONIC REPRODUCTION i931 I-POD Ghetto Blaster ? (uses I pod where the cassette deck used to be) the LASONIC Reproduction I pod model even has the trademark LED METER that made these portable recording studios so famous, RU-vid wont let me post RU-vids own videos of these ghettoblasters
Hi, I happen to have one of the new models with bluetooth. The original LASONIC probably sounds a bit better though. I'd really like to here the new SHARP GXM10 boom box. Apparently has more bass than the JVC models. Although bass isn't everything. :)
Theres few ways you can use those *1980's Graphic In-Dash Equalizers with the dual 7 band LED Meters* you can still find these at flea markets or on E-Bay...or you can re-wire the neons power supply into the sub-woofers, so those neons would Pulse to the rythem, something that would be a mobile DJ bass station booty dropper lightshow. Japan has very cool looking vehicles looking like the Gundam robot that lights up too
;-)p You're welcome-Would LOVE to see more of these Older Model GhettoBlaster cassette models Modded out to the max that is LED meter responsive to the boombox beats...I grew up with these relics, and always KNEW the oringinal LED VU sound sensitive meters had lot more potential than what the stock GhettobBlasters had at the time these models was made-notice that theres not many cassette GhettoBlasters that does have such LED VU Lightbar Meters built in-Digital dash sterero need bring back style!
I think that in this model the sharp equipment does not reach the conion in power it looks more robust heavier in intimidating you have done tests on who best records the cassette tapes

you had to have one of them i had the conion and a friend of mine had the sharp they both were the deal. if you had one of them you were the god my hip hop in the early 80's lots of lawns trimmed to get that one HA HA HA HA
Conion 100 VERY RARE WORKING CONDITION-TAPE DECK STILL WORKS where the cassette deck mechanism can still pull a cassette tape, usually the cassette drive belt has dryrotted , or worse-all boomboxes has the possibility to have their sound channel circuits blown, which totally ruins the radio, just because the ghettoblaster turns on and you see the power light, does not mean some of the features will work when find used radio cassette recorders. Cassette drive belt of recorder is the most vulnerable
2hughesy 2hughesy I agree, but I'm not sure of prices, I have some systems myself, I am a big hip hop head, some rock, little bit heavy metal and a few other genres of music.. Over 500+ CDs maybe 30 vinyls and like 6 cassettes haha, but I will post a video of it all someday soon! I love the Sharp GF-777
Very true... Bigger n badder 16,,d batteries... Double tape Bluetooth, ipod Cd, Conion,part,1 Conion, hyper sound Part,2 Conion,part,3 2021 Electronic giants Please bring it Back????????? I also have a sharp gf 777 with "2" "sets" of grills, one set with the original skickers and the other without the stickers as shown in the video and my father and I are willing to sell it but unfortunately it's hard to sell because of the country I live in.
The Sharp 777 didn't have great low lows under 150hz...more of a mid bass set-up...Loud as hell tho compared to most boomboxs Bak then...I had a Panasonic rx45 that was probably one of the loudest radios due to the way the speakers were built I'd suspect..I also could connect house speakers To it also... .. Panasonic rx45 had a bigger brother type same looking as mine Cept it was more black...that this would be hard to beat out if anything back then from most boomboxs I ever seen as a kid... boomboxs Bak then never had great enclosures built around there speakers which was insane and made most crap for great bass
Sharp GF-777 model has better sound, but the Conion 's Dual LED VU Meter for recording and play back has better entertainment value where the light show distraction on a street is concerned. Same dual LED (or neons) light show result can be done with the Sharp GF-777 if add a car indash LED Graphic Equalizer
two vintage 1980s ghettoblasters sound acoustics quality is being demostrated, CONION C100 F and the SHARP GF-177... the Conion C100 having the dual LED lights VU meter looking much like the scanner on the Knight Rider Pontiac puts on quite a show at night on the street, but the sound frequency is not as extensive as the Sharp GF-777, just by looking at the better speakers that is in the Sharp GF-777, you can tell the radio on top is going to win in sound quality- great sound quality tape decks are still common -but hardly ever- do you get the very rare chance to get a dual LED VU Meter crowd getter like the CONION C100F, If see a working Conion C100F for sale...BUY THAT SUCKA QUICK
The '98 JVC RV-B90 kaboom blows away all these 80s boomboxes by a long shot. especially the hard hitting bass. i use to own the Conion C-100F which i bought new back in '84. Big and loud and flashy but the bass technology was lacking. Great looking pair of collector items you have there, take good care of them.
I can as I do and also use a Bluetooth cassette adapter or a Bluetooth FM transmitter because most my music is on my phone. I do play my cassettes but some radios the belts are shot. I have transferred most my cassettes to MP3 as not to ruin the tapes anymore than time has done to them already. I have some music and DJ shows you just can't find or buy .
The GF-777 sounds better than the C100F! I haven't heard both of these in person because maybe these models where not released in the Philippines at that time and I was also small at that time! Sharp wins for me! Its good to here that these boom boxes have RCA L and R inputs for you to use a stereo RCA male to 3.5mm female wire so you could put your other devices and here the sound come out on these boom boxes!
Were you listening for sound quality or just loudness ? I have both and they are beast and it also depends on the kind of music you listen to because the Sharp is more clear.
I know how they sound and the Common has better sound. The Sharp is a huge dissapointment in sound, very dull and definitely not as bass or loud as it looks. I just recently sold much better and truley "Holy Grail" boomboxez: the JVC RCM90 and smaller M70. The M70 would blow both of these away in loudness and the M90 would totally demolish them in sheer overwhelming loudness and utter fantastic sound quality. Go for those if you want to spend your money on a truely good boom box..
