Big thankyou from scotland mr12volts. I have a sherwood 1010 amp/tuner thats been driving me nuts, First problem was the radio would drop out at random, After tracking down the issue and fixing it i noticed all the FM Stations were off by 50 Khz, Quick tweek of the detector coil cured the problem, Cheers..
Sometime in the late '70s or early '80s the Japanese electronics manufacturers developed an affinity for rubber-like parts which over time turned a goop. As you stated, alcohol works wonders.
Well done Dave. I have a Sharp cassette deck that suffered same- I tried all sorts of combinations to attempt a repair, including heat shrink, but I ended up buying a set of belts etc that were remanufactured and did the job, the capstan sleeve turned to liquid , like yours.
I've had my GF525 since 1987...only recently...2 years ago approx (recent to me)...i did a overhaul on mine..tape 2 wasn't working...I fitted a new pinch roller and all 4 belts...got all functions except fast rewind on deck 2...I call it a win...it's a huge double cassette radio...I keep it in a small suitcase...a collectors item...I seen one sold for around 500 pounds...that's almost 500 dollars...I won't sell though
LOL Dave! Ghetto Blaster, jam box ,Harlem honker , boom box we called them all! F' the PC stuff. we never had problems before all of the PC crap! Great Vid.
I'm amazed that thing survived with both antennas intact! A real "survivor" find! Also, I believe the current PC term for that is "Boom Box", which is the term Techmoan uses.
Screw PC tired of special interest groups getting their way. Had a coworker tell me he was on the job and there were 4 kids just screaming at the top of their lungs and picking up his tools and running off with them. When he spoke to the mother she screamed back "they are on the spectrum" had that been me i would have said control your kids or I am walking and I would do just that. Had a crazy lady that was obviously out of her mind on drugs start undressing in front of me. I put my tools away and left. Before anyone comments on this she was old enough to be my mother, but the last thing i wanted to do is be working in a place with someone in that state of mind.
I think George Carlin said it right, "There are no bad words, only bad intent." It depends on the context and delivery if it is meant to be hurtful, or demeaning. The PC stuff has gone way too far. Did you really have to bleep that word out?
I had one in the early 80s and even made a presentation for my English class about it, playing some Def Leppard in the background... or was it the scorpions? Mike Fickner loved it... Thanks to Mr. Pastorino, RIP.
It didn't take you long to home in to the v.c.o. Not a bad Raster Blaster, i like the modular pcbs with interconnecting wires on plugs. It's obvious what the pcbs do, like the radio pcb. A nice old bit of kit, sharp made some decent stuff. It's an impressive looking beast. I've serviced sharp tape decks and can't remember any nightmares.
@@12voltvids It's odd that the oscillator was not controlled with say a varicap diode. Maybe it was but the pll circuit was ill. Crappy caps upsetting the phase lock up. I did expect you to call the radio a piece of ship, you take no prisoners :-D
Great! A new video. You cannot say "beep", lol. Our first Microwave oven was a Sharp. Lasted almost 28 years. The door started crumbling on the inside and had to toss it.
I wish I saw this two years ago. I had an impressive Optonica Tape Deck which has the exact same problem with that tire. I couldn't find one, unfortunately I recycled it.
Nice work i have a sharp gf 9090 that also needs the same work doing much the same type of mechanism in its use of belts and the idler tyres and flywheel rubber piece .
I think the flywheel rubber piece was at afterthought like when they designed it and it didn't work in an engineer looked at it it says oh shit it won't fit the tire won't engage the caps and shaft let's just put a piece of rubber on it to increase its size.
It was not calculated at the time that ghetto blasters / boom boxes survived for so long, this construction of the cassette deck is also installed in the GF 9191/9292/9494/9696 and others. .I replaced it with a 3D printed part, works great.. cast from Leipzig Germany...
I think probably when these portable stereos were made they were considered items that teenagers would have in their bedroom to drive their parents crazy. 90% of them were never taken out of the house. They sat in a bedroom or on a kitchen counter and we're enjoyed. The next generation of course was the mini systems. For people that live in beachfront communities maybe a few of them went to the beach a few times but that was not the normal use of boomboxes. I have a couple myself which sound quality wise would put this one to shame. They're both Panasonic one of them has 20 watts per channel and the other one has I think it's 36 watts per channel it's a buy amp unit it's got four amplifiers four wires per speaker. Both have CD and cassette and one of them I put a Bluetooth board in.
That's right, I see it too. I still have a small collection of boomboxes and walkmans, which today's youth no longer know. It was a great time that will never come again... r.i.p 80/90s.. Your videos are always very interesting, even if I don't understand much about them, I can see exactly what you're repairing..
Never seen that model down here in Portland. The magnets on the woofers looked a bit more substantial than most of the small/medium sized boomboxes I've seen. Sounded satisfyingly punchy for a smaller unit. I have a Sharp VZ-2000 with the vertical turntable and i love that thing but it sounds like shit in comparison.
ghetto blaster A large, portable, radio cassette player, measuring about 1.5 m wide and 1.0 m high. It is played especially outdoors, in public places at loud volume; and carried on one shoulder with loudspeakers facing the head. It is assumed that bypassers share the same musical taste. (Urban Dictionary) 🤣
Yes they are junk this one came back. I should put up a video of what I found on second inspection. Work fine for me when I fast forward rewind and play however I didn't let the tape go all the way to the end. Guy that owns it rewind to tape to the end and when the tape it the end of its travel and stopped instantly one of the plastic gears inside exploded just to do it being rotten plastic. Guy wanted his money back. Brought it to me to fix the tuner and change an idler and then a plastic gear decides to shatter and that somehow is my fault. 40 year old shit.
@@12voltvids They were some of the best units you could buy. Of course something will break after 44 years. Watches, cars, boomboxes. Everything needs parts at some point. Thankfully, they are quite easy to repair, there's a lot of interchangeability between models and because they are sought after, you can get aftermarket parts.
What, we cannot say Ghetto Blaster anymore? Is it a Canada thing or worldwide thing? PC terminology woul db Boom Box methinks. Here in Central Pennsylvania, we still call 'em Ghetto Blaster! I Had a Panasonic Platinum RX-5500 / Boom Box/Ghetto Blaster and I carried it proudly on my shoulder. The D Batteries weighed more than the unit, and together they both weighed more than me at that age, I swear! Loud, proud, great sound and portable. My Ghetto Blaster Boom Box is bigger than you're baby MP-3 Player, lol and louder too , .. for at least the entire 45 minutes before the batteries went flat! 10 bucks in batteries, that's early to mid '80's 10$, cutting a lawn or yard cleanup money for batteries and tapes, Maxell UDXL-C90's, CrO2 only .. I was 16 when I got mine for Christmas one year. Thanks for sharing this!
It was actually Americans that complained to RU-vid when used the word. I had to deal with yt reviewing my video for possible infractions. So no, it isn't a Canadian thing it is a USA thing.
@@12voltvids On behalf of my overly liberal, highly sensitive fellow citizens, I apologize to you and your fellow Canadians for their actions. I love your content and your irreverent attitude, not to mention your mad ET skills. Keep posting great content and Rock On! Life is too short to hassle over mere words, which as our mommas taught us, won't ever hurt you. RU-vid could take a lesson from this in their corporate attitude. Freedom of speech is in more danger than ever around here, though today not all speech is free I suppose? Points to ponder .. lol.
@@phillanassa759 yes we have to cater to the special interest and "protected" groups. I shit you not, someone did a burn out over a rainbow colored crosswalk and they charged the driver with a hate crime. Do it over a regular crosswalk and you might get a ticket for squealing your tires but certainly not a criminal charge. Gone too far, you betcha. Points for whoever remembers that tag line.
Very interesting and informative video again. I have a grundig ums30 mini hi fi system that was put away for storage for approx 5 years while the kids were young. When I resurrected it and attempted to tune the digital tuner it just keeps going through the waveband and doesn't seem to find any station or stop at a particular frequency. It doesn't see any am or fm stations. Any idea what to look for apart from the antenna that is intact and good solder joints on the pcb. I'd appreciate any test you can recommend,. Kind regards Allen
21:45 I did the excact same fix (heathshrink tube around the axel) on an old Optonica deck. Those are Sharp machines too just a bit fancyer, and it worked, for a week or two... Then the tube started to slip on the axel even if I had rubbed the surface of the axel and cleaned it with IPA to give it better grip. So no, I dont have much hope for your easy fix.
I'm having a tuner issue with my lasonic trc-975. Even when a station is tuned in it goes in and out and sounds like it's not turned in correct. normally I would just take it apart and fix it myself but that gbeeepo blaster was willed to me by my uncle. If I even got the cash I want to get a full restoration done on it
i wonder if you could have fixed my Sony CD Walkman. i trough it away long ago when it broke. as i recall it spinned the cd but no sound came out and no tracknumber was shown
G Blaster and boombox resto's are my thing! I hope for simple fixes like a record bar switch being corroded or just new belts needing replaced. Sometimes I get stuck and have to watch your vids (ha ha)! This is a long shot to ask but; I have a Sony CFS 88 with no left channel on any output, cleaning pots has done nothing, I believe it may be pre-amp related but don't know what to test for. Any ideas? Thanks:)
You really need electronics experience to do restorations. The service manual is available as a free download to help out but is not very high resolution. It's a fair bet that if none of the sources work then it may be the power amp IC itself or most likely a coupling cap feeding the signal to the amplifier. The amplifier IC in this unit is an HA1392 hitachi chip which is IC 302 on the board. This is an in-line dual amplifier chip with a heatsink tab. Looking at the label side of the IC.....pin 1 starts at the left side of the IC. Pins 2 and 5 are the left and right channel inputs. There will be a resistor in-line with each one of those pins. In-line with those resistors are the input coupling caps... 0.47uF 50V caps. As a quick reality check you can CAREFULLY jumper pins 2 and 5 of the IC. If you get sound out of both speakers, the amplifier is good. Replace BOTH caps (why?....if one failed the other may not be far behind) and see if that fixes the issue.
@@MrDmbright65 AMAZINGLY helpful thank you! I'm getting so much experience from a zero knowledge level and it's great fun to successfully fix a box (best so far is mending the balance slider on a VZ2000) but electronics are still like black magic to me - I'd have no chance without people like you (and 12voltvids) - thanks again.
@@DeePaignall hmm. Hopefully its simple as capacitors or something. I have one that has low volume on the left channel and suspect its capacitors but haven't got too far into it.
I don't know how many of you saw the series finale the TV series shameless but it was a classic. Right at the last minute of show of the show there's a guy freaking out because his Tesla parked across the street from the bar is going up in a flames. I laughed so hard at that ending it was priceless.
@@12voltvids i think the seller said the tuner did not work but i thought i would try and fix it. bought it in 2013 i paid $75 for it total with shipping but i can't remember what i sold it for. maybe $150
LOL beeps the word when talking about the radio but no beeps when saying it in the song titles. i know the term well, heard it a lot, we used to call them boom boxes
I was being sarcastic as the last time i called a boom box a ghetto blaster the flakes started getting upset and filing complaints Soni was just having fun and it looks like a sent a few people over the edge. As far as PC goes I am on social media and broadcasting to the world. Of course i have to be careful what I say because some people take things the wrong way and it can blow up on your face. I know more than one person that made a comment that I would have laughed at and ended up being fired from their job for something they said on social media that had nothing to do with their work but because someone complained the company fired them rather than deal with lost business because a group boycotted them until the fired them.
I have had every sharp gf 9 series but the 9595 always eluded me - to this day.and now they make stupid money and I’m just a charity shop worker so out of my league
Hey 12voltvids what is the problem of when i powere up my full size vhs camcorder Panasonic nv-3000 the loading motor runs automatically for some seconds then gose off when i press eject or power on its run automatically same problem with my Hitachi 600E vhs camcorder i waiting for ur kind reply please help
Wait, why is g* blaster an offensive term now? I've always called them that and never given it a second thought, it'/s just what they've always been called.....
Because this is the nanny State now and if you say something that might offend one person they will crucify you. Send you for sensitivity training, pull your video down whatever. So many fragile sensitive people out there these days they just love to look for anything that might offend. Out here we have a few crosswalks that have been painted the rainbow colors. Somebody did a burnout over it and they were looking for dash cam footage security footage so they can identify the person and charging with a hate crime if you can believe it. had it been a regular crosswalk no one would have given it a second look but because it was a rainbow crosswalk that represents a protected group that was now a hate crime.
No I don't own a Tesla. I wouldn't touch a BMW either as I had one of those once you only make those mistakes once in life. Both my electrics are made by general motors. The discontinued Chevy volt
BMW, Merc, VW are unable to keep up quality levels and are using cheaper 3rd parties for components. It's a pity. The latest Hyundai electric cars are supposed to be amazing value, and say better electric drives and batteries. Anyway they all take too many resources to make, and ultimately run off coal or oil power plants.
I know what you mean about Tesla's. But I have always called those cars, Musk's. If it was truly a Tesla, then it wouldn't need or be using batteries for power. If you know what I mean.👍
