Sharp Top Mountain Hike Virginia - Peaks of Otter Fall Camping Trip - Part 1 of 2

This is Part 1 of a 2 part video series of my hiking trip to the Peaks of Otter area. Its located right off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Bedford, Virginia and its just gorgeous. I camped in the Peaks of Otter Campground in Loop A, site 38. I show the campsite towards the end of the video. I hiked Sharp Top Mountain a 2.7 mile, 1,280 feet in elevation gain hike for magnificent 360 degree views from the top. Stay tuned for Part 2 and for another hike in this area.

Some lovely Fall colours and a real nice hike to the top of Sharp Top Mountain, not keen on all those steps either. Never seen a skinny snake like that before but he seemed to just keep out the way. The view from Buzzard Roost was real nice as well and a real nice lake to return too. The camp fire looked great and real nice to sit around and discuss they days hiking, cheers Alan

That was a ring neck snake🐍 Only slightly venomous. They usually only come out at night for the most part. Fall is in full swing right now. My fav time of the year with all the glorious colors! Watching campfire on a fall night = priceless!

Wow! Those views tho! The rocks and the rock structures (stairs, walls, etc) would be worth that climb! Thanks for sharing! A car camping positive...you can take a lot of creature comfort items with you!

I highly recommend this hike for sure! I love car camping, almost glamming when I can. Much different than carrying everything on your back and tenting. Then I take the bare minimum! I don’t want to carry all that weight for all those miles.

Thanks Jason! The snake was only slightly venomous, lol. It’s a ring neck, usually don’t see them in the daytime, only at night. Just put out Part 2 of this vid today. It’s an extraordinary area that for sure. Thanks for checking out my vids!

Sharp top was the first mountain I ever hiked back when I was a boy scout many years ago. It on my bucket list to do. I don’t remember much about so it was nice watching your video.

Ha ha! I am ready for some fall temps to both hike and camp in! Watch my video that comes out tomorrow (Wed) for a new wine in a can that I tried. I backpacked to my campsite with 2 cans of heavy vino! So worth it!

@@OutdoorExistential if I liked beer I would take beer (def more variety options) It’s def an easy way to take a drink. Some of my hiker friends take a flask of whisky. Whatever you like, take it! What’s that saying whatever floats your boat! Ha Ha!

Any thoughts on how the hike up Peaks of Otter Sharp Top compares to the short, steep hike up Humpback Rock?

I have down both. Sharp Top is longer in length. Sharp Top has a better 360 view, but I have done the short and long figure 8 hike to Humpback and love that too. They both have an uphill climb. Sharp Top would be my 1st choice out of the 2.

It's 2.7 mile hike, and 1,280 feet in elevation gain. It's doable for sure, just be careful on the leaves on the rocks being slippery and covering holes and such if you're carrying babies. The kiddos will be tired from the steepness of the elevation gain but you can rest as often as you want. They can rest in the shelter at the top too which is really cool. Best of luck to you! @@allisonbutler7168 I have a video on flat top too. That hike is much more difficult than this one. More steep, 1,700ft elevation gain and it's uphill the whole way up from Abbott Lake. FYI
