@@ianraymondbackQuite different in the book I hear. He was a lot more sour about it, but I prefer how it is in the Show anyways. Lawyer for a Rich Widow indeed... Sharpe's new commander is a typical example of why half a century later, after the disaster of the Crimean War, buying commissions was banned by an act of Parliament. Amateur soldiering. Asking for it. 😁
@Tiwaz81
@Tiwaz81 3 месяца назад
1871. WAY after the Crimea. And Britain was neither the only country to do it. Only Prussia did NOT have it. Crimean War was not a disaster either. The charge of the light brigade was a tragic farce but even that took place in the midst of a victory.
@DomWeasel
@DomWeasel 3 месяца назад
@@Tiwaz81 Disaster is too strong a term but it was a chaotic war due to disorganisation. And the aristocratic elements blocked any real reform of the British Army which meant many of the logistical issues it faced in the Crimea would be endured again in the First World War.
@malcolmstonebridge7933
@malcolmstonebridge7933 3 месяца назад
@@DomWeasel The logistics in the Crimea were quite good - they even laid a telegraph cable to the front and built railways to bring kit up.
@DomWeasel
@DomWeasel 3 месяца назад
@@malcolmstonebridge7933 It was getting the 'kit' to the Crimea in the first place that was the problem. Britain wasn't equipped for a land war and so struggled to supply the guns sieging Sevastopol which is why the siege lasted ten months due to the delays of producing and the shipping ammunition to the Black Sea; WW1 would have a similar "shell crisis". They also paid little attention to the upcoming Russian winter until it was too late which was ironic considering how much press the British gave to the winter's role in Napoleon's defeat four decades earlier. The war demonstrated again how Britain was masterful at conducting amphibious operations but struggled to adequately supply an army in the field for an extended length of time. One of Wellington's greatest accomplishments during the Peninsular War was his skills at admin; stretching what little resources he had to their full effect. The British in the Crimea lacked a similarly effective administrator.
