@@RinoGato the French didnt follow the rules of war!!!! They looted and stole from towns and farms, Napoleon called it "Living off the land". They murdered surrendered troops and slaughtered civilians. Everyone in the Peninsular war committed horrifying acts of barbarity, that's how war goes. In my original comment i just said that Loup has reasons for slaughtering people, other than just "were at war". Its a rare moment that even Sharpe is surprised - as no one wants to do it as its usually shooting a fellow soldier, a friend. But the rifles had seen what Loup's men had done and seen the horror. ALL were part of the firing squad. However what Sharpe did here was technically a breach of rules of war - he shot unarmed POWs. No matter the crime, it is not up to the opposing officer to be Judge/jury. And he did it in front of the enemy - this, if it became more well known, could mean French doing the same to British POWs. Wellington would have a talk to Sharpe about it and he should not act out of passion But one can make the argument that Loup had a point and did his orders effectively. As a result of the horror he did, no partisans attacked loup's patrols.

I don't think the legal term POW existed back then but as far as I know it was already established in medieval times that treating prisoners, at least important ones, like one of your own (except bearing arms and movement) was considered honorable. So if Sharp has the legal authority to punish his own men for the same offense in the same way, he should have the same authority concerning his prisoners. Loup is a great villain, very rarely see the likes written in modern TV or film. He is a monster, but he knows he has to be to maintain control, whilst also carrying passionately about his men, which is very rare in a villain. Normally their troops are a means to an end and their deaths are little more than collateral damage. As opposed to someone like Calvet who also cares about his men, but does so more for the love of his country. Very good writing.

@@TheStapleGunKid it was responded in a comment to one of the vids on this channel. The French army looted freely, just as they did in any country they occupied. The Brits made it a point to never loot, steal, or rape, as they positioned themselves as liberators, not occupants. Occasional looting and harassment took place at first, but provosts (Military Police), who hanged the looters in place, took quick care of it. That won the Brits support from Portuguese guerillas, who provided supplies and intel, which helped win the campaign.
